Perhaps my expectations were too high. I had thought the menu available at lunchtime would reflect the fine food aspirations, but with the exception of of the starter this was not the case. The crab starter was excellent, but the choice of mains courses available at lunchtime was disappointing. The three mains were a risotto, a burger and fish and chips. I had hoped for something more interesting. The fish and chips, with charred lemon, gribiche sauce and peas was OK, but the chips were not crispy and the batter on the fish was a little thick, although initially crispy soon became soggy. The dessert of buckthorn tart was again OK, but nothing exceptional. The lunch menu is served as two courses for £20 or three courses for £25, with a £4 supplement for the crab starter or course by course. Sandwiches are also available, The dining room is pleasant. The service was welcoming, if a little slow at times. The wine list was interesting. I do not think that I have experienced the best that this restaurant can offer and would return to investigate the dinner tasting menu, but I will not be returning for the lunch menu.

Dear TravellerNEEngland Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate all feed back so we can improve our services and menu, but "ok" does not give us much to work on. Our lunch time menu reflects our guests preferences. Our chefs are always looking to develop the menu and add new dishes. We look forward to welcoming you in the evening when you can experience a different style of menu with a relaxed atmosphere.

It pains me to write this review because I know as soon as everybody knows you won't be able to get a table here for months. This was sublime. The team here have managed to balance welcoming and homely with some of the best food we have ever had. Parsnip and honey veloute with cheese, parsnip crisps and crystallised ginger, beyond good, Mackerell wrapped we think in carrot which was soaked in sake, with a dashi and mackerel bone broth, subline, pig cheeks, yum yum. Lamb roast from the flock of sheep you could spy from window, stone bass with celeriac that tasted like it had just jumped from the sea and a pumpkin risotto that had depth but lightness that tasted as if it had been fluffed by angels, I kid you not this is some serious cooking. One diner was gluten free and a pear souffle with a chocolate and bourbon sauce was made on the spot to make sure they were not left out, even though it was not on the Sunday menu. This is indeed a dog friendly pub, and the pooch is treated well and supplied with treats. The pedigree of this team is not half bad, look them up on the website. I knew on the first slurp of my veloute that this was a place I wanted to come back to. Thank you so much to the team who have clearly put so much care, love and passion into what they provide, we salute you.

We visited the restaurant in May and were disappointed with the lunch menu available at that time. We decided to return when the tasting menu was available at lunchtime. This we have done and we are very pleased that we did. The tasting menu, comprised of five courses, with the option of a cheese course for a supplement of £10, was priced at £65. This may sound expensive, but each course was well prepared and beautifully presented. This made for a very enjoyable time. I would certainly return.

We visited last week for an evening meal based on a neighbours recommendation. The food is delicious! Some reviews like to give a blow by blow description of the food……delicious says it all as far as we’re concerned. The wine list offers some less obvious, but fabulous choices. The prices are very good considering the standard and size (filling!) of portion….it is a happy medium between Michelin style food and high end gastropub. Great food but you won’t leave hungry!!!! So wonderful food and drink….BUT…..not only is it incredibly dog friendly (our little Ronnie was fussed and spoilt!) it’s clear the owners and staff understand real British hospitality. No cramming eating tables into every corner, like you see in far too many pubs these days. There are VERY comfortable sofas and chairs and you are welcomed by happy cheerful staff as soon as you arrive. You’re offered drinks before going to dinner and can sit back on the sofa afterwards. The hosts listen to whatever you want to witter on about and will remember you had wanted to try one of their lovely cocktails! We started by saying we just needed to keep the review simple……and now we’re going on and on!!! But hey, all North Yorkshire pubs and cafes are great, the food is great all over….but the Eskdale is……delicious! 🤓

Called in by chance when passing. Whitby fish and chips with peas was both of our choice. Food arrived beautifully presented lightly battered fish, triple cooked chips and amazing tasting peas. To accompany homemade vinegar, tarter sauce and curry sauce The meal was delicious. Tempted by the amazing sounding cheesecake white chocolate and amaretto with blueberries. Melt in the mouth taste. Rounded off by a lovely cup of tea. Tempted by the lovely comfy sofa and log burner after our meal but I feel I may have fallen asleep. I would recommend this restaurant. Staff were very attentive and friendly.

What a fantastic restaurant, great feel, friendly staff and excellent food. We visited for an evening meal after seeing the reviews and noticing its mention in the Michelin guide, and these are well earned, as the food is superb, on par with Michelin stared restaurants I have been lucky enough to visit. The dishes are well thought out, the elements complement each other very well, the food is well presented and the options are enough to ensure they will give options to most palates. Prices are relatively cheaper than you would expect for food of this standard, with main dishes starting from about £15. The wine list has enough to ensure you can find a good accompaniment to any dish, with pairings if you choose the sample menu. The staff are attentive but not over powering, friendly and helpful, explaining the elements of the dishes they serve and happy to answer any questions. A wonderful experience from start to finish, I will be returning.

We enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch as a couple here. Two courses from a set menu for £23 or three courses for £28. Whilst the dining area isn’t huge it was sufficient and well decorated. My partner chose to have a starter of ham hock and described it as ‘a taste sensation.’ It was very flavoursome. We then had our main courses where I had lamb and my partner beef. The food was well presented and cooked perfectly. There were some unusual items which gave it a little twist and made it a little different from your traditional Sunday lunch. The Yorkshire pudding had brisket, red cabbage and mash in. Whilst on the plate there was creamed leeks and a bowl of vegetables was also brought with kale, cabbage and roasties in. The food tasted delightful. I had a dessert which was an apricot tart with ice cream and again it was lovely and served warm. If you are looking for a treat and somewhere really nice for Sunday lunch this is it. We would definitely visit again.

Right. Here we go. If you want fine dining in the moors this is the place to go. Pleasant staff who will explain all about the food you're about to eat and are well versed with the menu. These folk are good at banter and engage with the customer answering any qualestion you may have The bar is well stocked and reasonably priced with Four ales on hand pump and lagers on pour. I didn't have the wine but if the ale is anything to go by its guid...very good. The food is next level and out of this world. The menu has something for everyone which is well prepared and presented. The table was ours all night and as long as we wanted it. We were early for our booking and it was no problem at all. I can't say enough about this place. Thanks for a lovely meal.

Stopped off here on Saturday after a gorgeous walk in the North York moors. The food was absolutely delicious - I had a risotto and my partner and sister had the chicken pie. We also shared a bottle of the house wine which was lovely. One thing I really loved was how welcoming and friendly the staff were - they were out to greet us straight away and made us feel really welcome and were super friendly! We will 100% be returning and will definitely have the soufflé!!

We ate at The Eskdale today. A fantastic meal in a lovely setting (both in terms of the countryside and the interior) that we'd thoroughly recommend. Service was warm without being overbearing, good range of drinks, lovely table next to a roaring burner. It was my mum's birthday and they'd set out a banner. To start I had the cheese and truffle soufflé, which already in January might be the best thing I eat in 2024. Absolutely exceptional. Both my parents had French Onion soup, generous with serious depth. And the cheese toast served on the side, which my dad thought was a great idea and kept it getting too stringy. When it came to mains there was a seriously large fish and chips, with fluffy chips that had superb crunch. Gnocci with spinach and jerusalem artichokes that looked, smelt and tasted delicious. Then the let down of the meal sadly. A spiced lamb shank with coconut curry dauphinoise, lamb samosas, dukka and Rendang sauce that needs a re-think. It lacked the slow cooking that a lamb shank really needs and consequently the fat hadn't broken down, leading to a rubbery texture that was actually quite unpleasant. The concept was great but a rack or rump would have made more sense I think. The dauphinoise were crispy but you could hardly taste the coconut which needed an equivalent sauce that makes a dauphinoise. The rendang sauce and spiced coating on the shank were both tasty but needed an added salty dimension to it and also something sour to cut through a plate that was actually surprisingly similar throughout, maybe a lime dip or pickle of some description. The lime that was lacking in the main was certainly present in the lime bavarois, white chocolate, chocolate sponge and chocolate that was an excellent, refreshing end to the meal and went a good way to making up for the disappointing shank. The whole meal felt very reasonable in terms of price for somewhere listed in the Michelin guide. The only comment about service would be that nobody asked if everything was ok when clearing the main, considering that a lot of the shank had been left. We won't be discouraged though and will certainly be returning for a second meal, this time for bouillabaisse as main, which looked sensational on the next table.

Thank you for your kind feedback on your dining experience, we do try our best and take all feedback on board so we can get better but we are not sure how we could cook the lamb for longer. It is a 72 hour cooking process for the lamb and if we cooked it longer we wouldn't be able to keep it on the bone when we serve it. We will review our cooking process and see what we can do though and we look forward to welcoming you back to see if we have improved the cook in your opinion.

We had 2 truly excellent meals at The Eskdale this week - it was so good the first time that we immediately booked to return the next night! The menu was creative and varied, and the food full of flavour. This was matched by friendly and attentive service, making the whole experience an absolute delight. We would certainly recommend a visit to anyone in the area!

Driving through the North Yorkshire Moors, the winter sun was low. We we in search of of The Eskdale, an eatery situated in the rural moorland village of Castleton. As we entered the quaint dining room, we were greeted by the warmth of a log burner, and a warmer Christmas welcome from the staff. The food is excellent. To start, a smoked salmon crumpet, warm from the oven, served with dill and a decadent caviar topping. A main of Hake, in a rich Bouillabaisse sauce, and smoked mussels, sigh fennel, served with roasted root vegetables of carrots and parsnips (festive) with a honey glaze. Despite being stuffed following two courses, we opted for desert and the warm Bramley crumble tart, served with a creamy Earl Grey infused ice cream. Our party of four thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The staff are cheerful, and guided our menu choices and the wine pairing, features wines rated 4.2 and above (Vivino). Highly recommended, for the food, service and rural drive. Plus points all round. Signing out Jimmy Points

Just back from an absolutely amazing lunch at the Eskdale. The food and the service here are second to none and the ambiance perfect, it should have a Michelin star in my opinion! I have worked in hospitality and worked with a top chef in a French ski resort (so I know what I’m talking about- haha!) This was our second visit and although they didn’t have the tasting menu available it was still such a treat. We wanted some wine to compliment the food and Kirsty was able to provide some great pairings by the glass. The setting in the middle of the North Yorkshire moors national park is just perfect as well. Can’t wait for our next trip!!!

Had very pleasant evening in wonderful surroundings. Service and food was of the highest standard. We had the tasting menu, it was produced from locally sourced produce and the chef explained each course as it was served. Comfortable atmosphere whilst sitting on the large leather sofas in front of a welcoming fire before been shown to our table.

Very much recommend The Eskdale for an excellent meal - a perfect blend of fun fine dining and a warm pub atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals, fantastic cooking with quality ingredients, and two of the best ice creams (banana and woodruff) with our desserts that we've had for a long time. Very much dog friendly too, which was appreciated - our dog is rather nervous and can be a bit barky, but the staff were really welcoming in spite of this. We were really made to feel at home and am sure we'll be back!
