The Wellwood Arms offers a dining experience with mixed reviews. Patrons commend the cozy ambiance and live music, creating a friendly atmosphere that many find inviting. However, some guests have called out a lack of energy and unwelcoming vibes. Opinions on the food are split; the Sunday carvery and homemade dishes receive praise, but there are reports of overcooked meals and disappointing portions. Service quality also varies, from accommodating to slow, with some diners experiencing long waits. The value for money is debated, as some appreciate the generous portions, while others feel the prices don't match the mediocrity of certain dishes.

Great food, the burger I had was really succulent with really tasty garlic and stilton sauce, and the home cooked fat chips were delicious. Followed by a fab home made apple pie with delicious ice cream. The attentive and friendly staff took all covid precautions, wearing facemasks, and there are screens between tables which inspires my confidence! The hand pulled Timothy Taylor Landlord was superb

Visited here when attending a local horse trials. Was pleased with the choices on the menu, everything was great for pub food. The burgers were beautiful!! Deserts also amazing Only thing that let us down was the service. Ordering was confusing. The friends I visited with had been a few weeks previously and had had table service, but no one came to take our order, there was a QR code on the table to order which didn’t work. We had to go to the bar and ask for service and was then told we had to order at the bar….would of been great if we had been told this when we were seated. The barman who took our order was incredibly slow, especially at making the drinks, he seemed confused but was possibly new and I understand everyone has to learn the ropes. The food was quick out of the kitchen, we did however have to ask for cutlery for each course, it never turned up for our mains so I went over and got it out of the cutlery tray myself. I found the price really reasonable. Just under £140 for three courses and drinks for 4 adults and a child! Overall a good experience could be made great by a bit more attention to detail from the staff

We phoned short notice on a Tuesday for our evening meal, 2 adults and 2 teens, we were told there were no walk ins until 8pm as they were really busy, which was no problem at all, we booked for 8pm. When we got here we were seated promptly and a drinks order was taken straight away. I visited the ladies toilets and there was water all over the sides, i let the staff know and they cleaned it straight away. The staff came not long after to take our order for mains and were really friendly and helpful We ordered 4 burgers and they were all hot and fresh and really tasty. The only negative thing was that i found a small blonde / grey hair in my dinner, i did mention this to the staff who took it away and it seemed to be swept under the rug, i couldnt finish my meal after that and it would have been nice for something to have been discounted because of this issue, or for us to be offered a drink or dessert instead. I have seen quite a few bad reviews but we really didn't have that experience, ot might be because the staff have been so busy and we went at a quieter time. The fish and chips looked phenomenal. We would have ordered dessert but i was a bit put off with the hair 😔

My partner booked this for the two of us for my birthday on 27/8/20 , having been to this restaurant last year while we were on Holiday in amble & had a fantastic meal we thought we would have the same experience but unfortunately not , I ordered prawn cocktail served with caibatta bread , it was served on the bread small 4 oval pieces the prawns were really cold as if just defrosted & no more the sea food sauce was scarce plus watery I had to send it back still waiting for a replacement by this time my partner had finished his starter chicken strips with chicken gravy which he said was OK so ended up telling waitress not to bother & just deduct from bill which they did . Then our main meal came I ordered steak & Ale pie with chips and peas what I got was the equivalent of a steak pie supper for the price of £10.49 my partner ordered Hunters chicken again said it was OK but did comment that the chips tasted like chip shop ones . We left it at that as didn't want to chance dessert. Very disappointing will not be back or recommend this restaurant 😒

Seriously do not bother. After a painfully slow start with the only member of staff serving outside (There’s 4 behind a bar on the inside) Having asked for a completely inedible chicken burger to be kindly refunded. I do no appreciate two members of your staff - one being the ‘chef’ Robbie is it? And the other young girl, not sure if her name but she had pink glitter eyeshadow. Making a joke in front of other staff there about something I have pointed out in your food. I didn’t even ask for a refund on my meal which I should have. How long the mash was sat until it was served to me - who knows. The only girl with any wit and politeness about her was the one who refunded me. She had black hair in a pony tail. If you’re the manager, you’re too good for that place. Entirely. Seeing as the other 2 members of staff behind the bar “can’t do refunds” Above all, the food was atrocious and embarrassing to serve at the prices. Genuinely think at this moment in time if people are willing to give you their money to support a business you actually appreciate it and work hard.

Myself and 3 friends booked a table for 1415 today. When we arrived a lady shouted across the bar at us that they were shut for walk ins. We explained we had booked and were told quite abruptly to ‘go wait round the corner’. We went round the corner and stood outside the toilets. Nobody approached us so we went and asked to be told there was no table for us. So we were directed to a table that had just been vacated, with two seats to wait. There were 4 of us. We were then moved to another table. We made our orders straight away with our drinks. After an hour we asked where our food was as people had arrived after us and had been served. We were told there had been a ‘cock up’ in the kitchen and our food was being plated up now. Another 30 minutes and our food still hadn’t came. One of our party complained and we were told we would get 25% off the bill for the wait, which was fine. We heard some of the staff standing talking about how long we had waited and kept looking over. When the food arrived, the Yorkshire puddings were cold and the 3 Sunday dinners Luke warm. My friends burger was completely inedible. We spoke to the waitress, who was lovely, and she offered to have them remade however after waiting 1.5hrs we didn’t want to wait any longer as we had an appointment at 4pm. We just asked for extra gravy which was hot to pour on the dinners to warm them up. 2 of our party had to rush and leave to attend our appointment while myself and my other friend stayed back to finish which wasn’t great as we wanted to leave together. The burger was untouched and taken away the way it was. The manager then discounted two of the meals for us. The only positives were the garlic roasties, which were hot and very tasty and the waitresses, who were incredibly patient despite being absolutely rushed off their feet. I actually felt very sorry for them having to come to the table and continually apologise. Usually I wouldn’t consider tipping when I’ve had an experience like that however the waitresses were so nice we made sure we left them a tip. The turkey was nice and tender and was edible once the hot gravy was poured over it. All in all a very disappointing experience as the trip advisor reviews were excellent. A real dampener to the end of our lovely girls weekend away and sadly we wouldn’t recommend or return.

I booked restaurant for 25/1 as I was visiting Amble with my family to celebrate my birthday . We booked the restaurant for 7.30 on Open Table and received confirmation. We turned up just before 7.30 only for the staff to look at us blankly re reservation and asked had we booked it on open table . They scrambled around to get a table for 5 ready and we were then told the wait for food would be approx an hour as they had a very large party of approx 50 people. We sat there and then decided actually I had also phone the Wellwood Arms in the week and left a voicemail requesting a reservation before booking on open table ,they never called back. Clearly lack of management re bookings and we walked out as felt our custom clearly wasn’t welcome.

We had just moved here and had been looking forward to trying the Wellwood Arms as it looks so nice and had heard good things about it. We had some friends come to stay so thought this the ideal opportunity. Disappointed doesn't cover it - we were embarrassed to have taken friends there. I realise that the industy have had staffing problems but to order a bottle of Shiraz and get the reply 'what's that' was a definite first and a definite all time low. Someone needed to go through the drinks with the bar man! It got worse and worse. I had to ask someone to help me carry the drinks to the table - he just plonked them on the bar and I couldn't carry them all. In fact we had to ask for everything, cutlery, sauces salt and pepper the lot. Each time they just plonked the requested item down and left so we had to go find them for the next request! The menu was incredibly dull and all frozen food with 2 tiny portions of scampi and 2 dried up pies and we had to wait ages yo get it. Such a shame as decent staff and we would have forgiven the rubbish food but sadly we won't be back. We tried the less popular masons Arms over the road and both the food and staff were fab. If they don't improve they don't deserve to succeed at the moment restaurants should be working hard to get good reviews but it looks like this place cba.

Friendly waitress apologised more than once for the wait citing unexpected demand but found this hard to understand on a Friday afternoon in July after the schools have broke up. If not high demand then, when? Is it more accurate to say understaffed? Reasonable to assume fresh scampi given Amble’s port location but not the case and the oven chips were mostly crispy scraps from the bottom of the packet. Beer garden pleasant but avoid for food as you’ll be able to get the same standard in in Amble quicker, cheaper and better. Avoid.

Extremely disappointed we were a table of 6 booked in at 1pm for Christmas lunch @ £75 pp.We had preordered all of our meal choices as requested a week before. We arrived for 12:45 to be seated for a 1pm table. Half an hour later we were offered bread and oil which came with one small slice of bread each. We then waited another hour and a half for our starters which were cold prawns served on a hot plate and no sauce. Following the starters we waited another hour and a half for our main course. My 10year old son was served a raw chicken breast. At this point of the day after having a disappointing starter and a raw dinner being served we refused to pay and left. We know we were not alone in having a horrendous experience as several tables around us were also complaining. The waiting on staff were rushed off their feet and still trying to do a great job however it appears the pure greed of the place stretched them to far, leading to the quality of food being severely affected. We will not be back for any type of meal and would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

I booked a table for six for Mother’s Day, having spotted what looked like a decent 3 course special Mother’s Day menu online. Upon arrival we spotted that the main course on the menu had been overlaid with a label that simply said carvery. I have no problems with carvery’s as such, but this was a saga. Having waited 50 minutes for our starters of rather lack lustre garlic mushrooms to arrive, we were actually quite glad that a carvery wouldn’t require us to rely on waiting on staff. to bring our food. Unfortunately the staff were also pretty disinterested in us proving us access to the carvery and we had another wait while they hammered the meat and veg filling take away boxes for carry out customers, who are clearly their priority as far a customer service is concerned. Our patience finally frayed, we asked when we could come up to the carvery, as we had really been waiting sometime. This prompted a rather stroppy ‘ok, you can come up now’. Some veg trays, such as cauliflower cheese had been completely emptied satisfying the take away orders and had not been replenished, leaving us a limited choice of veg. Dessert arrived more quickly, but was inconstant in its presentation with some sundaes arriving with caramel sauce and some without, resulting in disappointment and a overall consensus that we’ll not return.

Table booked for 1815 told No carvery available on Sundays after 6pm and whole of the July specials list was not available and couple of other options not available. Pretty poor. Ordered button mushrooms in Stilton and garlic sauce - initial taste was ok but hair in sauce was unwelcome. Didn't feel like reordering. Others had lasagne and scampi which were OK, but no excuse for poor hygiene.

Avoid at all costs! We booked a table for a family meal, arrived on time only to be told “We’re running late, you will have to wait an hour. You can wait outside - we don’t have any tables inside.” I pointed out it was raining and we had 2 children; I got a shrug of the shoulders and was told that the “Eat out to help out” scheme had caused them problems and this had caused the delay. I asked why we hadn’t been called as they had our phone number and again got a shrug. We left. Don’t make the same mistake as us - avoid!!!

Having decided to visit Northumberland for a weeks break at short notice, we were very limited on accommodation options, however the Wellwood Arms seemed to tick all the boxes. Parking was to the rear of the property with a few steps down to the rear entrance door (however, step-free access is available to the front), and upon arrival in the restaurant area we were swiftly shown to our room by a member of staff. We stayed in Room 3, which from our understanding is the largest of the four guest rooms. There was one king size double bed and a bunk bed, and a table with tea and coffee making facilities. There was also a small television fixed to the wall, which also had a built in DVD player (there was a small selection of DVDs in the cabinet in the corridor). The bed was comfortable and the room fairly cosy. The bathroom was very spacious, and the shower over the bath had nice hot running water. The breakfast menu was great, with a good selection of cereals, tea, coffee and fruit juices, and various hot breakfast choices from the usual cooked English to Eggs benedict and Pancakes, etc. All options were very tasty and filling. Most evenings we enjoyed a meal in the restaurant and once again there was a good selection, which in the main were very tasty. On the whole we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Wellwood Arms, and wouldnt hesitate to stay again. The town of Amble was interesting and a great base to explore Northumberland. Things we thought could be improved; It would have been useful to have a copy of the food menu within the room. The staff were very friendly and efficient, but it would have been nice to have known their names, it would have been nice if they could have introduced themselves when we first arrived, etc. It would have been nice to have more interaction with the staff, ie. If they took an interest in what you were up to for the day and maybe offered some top tips, etc. (Which is what we have experienced in other B&B places we have stayed).
