We come to Seafish every year with 32 of us in between panto performances. This year we arrived to be told a 10% service charge would be added to all adult meals. We asked why and we had not been advised of at point of booking or at the other 2 times today when we called to update the order. We were told they'd had a big wedding the previous day needing additional staff who didn't leave a tip! The daft thing is we left over £40 in tips last year and this year they've made £18 in service charge. The meal was great the service was great which is why we always choose to come here but it isn't right to make that decision without informing us and not fair of the manager to leave it for the staff to inform us. It isn't detailed in the menu either.

We were on a day out in the area today and a quick Google showed this place to be close by. I booked online for the soonest available slot (14.20) but we arrived much sooner (13.30) and were welcomed no problem. The lady that served us was so friendly. It was nice to have a chat with someone as I think with the current situation servers sometimes feel they shouldn't stay and talk. She was lovely and made us feel so welcome. The food arrived quickly, the portions were a great size and it was absolutely delicious. We had drinks, mains and desserts and it averaged at just over £10 per person which I find excellent value for money. We will not hesitate to visit again should we be in the area. Thank you 😊

Visited this restaurant a few times now, and it's a choice for birthday and anniversary celebrations, or if we've been visiting Derbyshire walking, a nice reward! The meals are always delicious, and reasonably priced - their luxurious seafood pie is the best I have ever tasted. The standard fish and chips are also excellent. They do a very varied menu and cater for all tastes (check out the menu on their website). The staff are always friendly and helpful. They also have a take away fish and chip shop and a large parking area

My wife is allergic to capsicum in any form including peppers and paprika sometimes used for plate decoration. I always make this clear when making table reservations and on this occasion specifically told the waitress. My wife ordered prawn cocktail and it came smothered in paprika! Sent it back and eventually replaced. I again explained the allergy. For main my wife had the chicken with a side salad which was served with three kinds of peppers in it! My expectations are so low that I am rarely disappointed but this place was the exception. The service was appalling it took 30 minutes to get a bottle of wine. The food was average and overpriced (£4 for a pint of John Smiths) and the staff were ignorant, badly trained and could not care less. My advice would be if you have an allergy be afraid, be very afraid!

We visited here on a Saturday lunchtime and having placed our takeaway order after explaining our packaging requirements (nothing special as we wanted to eat in the car) we duly waited as would have been expected. After a 20 minute wait in a not particularly busy situation our order was completed by a different member of staff to the one who originally took the order and things eventually turned up wrapped other than expected, having pointed this out we were told "I didn't take your order, I only work here". We were then expected to pay an extra 25p for a polystyrene tray for a fish. Very shoddy indeed.

This is probably the worst fish and chips I've had in a long, long, time. So we arrived after my fiend had been previously been and said how fantastic it WAS, this time though he was bitterly disappointed and neither of us will be returning. There is social distancing going on here but they are not abiding by all government guidelines, to start there was a table of 7 eating where the maximum is 6, secondly the chef frying the fish was wearing his face-mask under his chin. So if your not already nervous you would be now, and that's before the poor excuse for food arrives out of the kitchen, £10.20 for fish and chips and that doesn't include any peas etc. I don't mind paying that price if the food is spot on but sadly it wasn't, the chips were undercooked and verging on raw, the fish was thinner than the depth of our knifes and the peas were dry. I will say though the the fish that did come was fresh and tasted very nice but the quantity and the quality of the chips, service and sides did not represent value for money in any shape or form. I have had larger and a higher quality of food from a bog standard chip shop in Blackpool, if you are looking for first class fish and chips in the local area go to George's Tradition in Belper. While the price of George's is relative to this establishment (possibly £2/3 cheaper) the quality and portion sizes exceeds in by 100 fold. When we raised our concerns with the waitress, she argued that there had been no complaints that day and I agree with her because at 5:30pm on a Friday evening the place was empty, so with no customers there can be no complaints or feedback. They then replaced my friends fish and chips but with the same poor quality (despite been asked to cook the chips more) but it wasn't worth arguing about as the manager clearly wasn't bothered. When you think about it, the saying a picture paints a 1000 words is so true when it comes to this place as they serve such rubbish customers are clearly voting with their feet.

Hello Matthew, After reading this review I do feel this is unfair and has some clear factual inaccuracies. As you can see from previous reviews as a restaurant when we are at fault we will hold our hands up. I will respond to your review in sections. If after this you would like to discuss this further i will leave my email address at the end. In such testing times in which are we fighting to stay open inaccurate reviews like this can be damaging to our reputation. 1) We are abiding by all government guidelines as I myself have a strict policy in place regarding this. On the date in question I was the manager on duty and I can assure you that that the table in question was actually an 8 and was a wake for a funeral which is exempt from the rule. In any case they still sat on two seperate tables. 2) Yes masks are mandatory and all staff wear them. However My chefs work over 175 degree fryers for 12 hours a day at times and as you can imagine this can become extremely hot. Occasionally to catch their breath they may pull the mask slightly down. However this is for a short period of time. 3) In regards to the quality of the chips and peas i do apologise for this. However to my recollection we did issue witha replacement which was overseen by myself personally as all complaints are and the chips were cooked for the required amount of time and were cooked perfect. 4) All of our fish is weighed every morning and each fish is the same weight. As fish come in different shapes and sizes no two fish is the same and depth can differ in this case the fish is often wider and longer. The second fish in which you received was weighed prior to being sent out and was in the correct range. 5) "the manager wasnt bothered" i feel this is an unfair comment as in fact we did not communicate regarding this. My staff comunicated with you and went above and beyond which is why i did not intervene. I will only intervene in situations in which i do not feel my staff are able to handle. In addition to this I was behind the scenes ensuring that your replacement was to a high quality. 6) In regards to people voting with their feet I can assure you the majority of our reviews are positive and we still have busy periods and in fact was busy that evening. In which we received no further complaints. I really do think that before you post reviews you should reflect on whether the content is accurate and the effect that this can have on a business. As aforementioned where we are at fault (which happens as we are not perfect) we will do our best ot ensure that the customer leaves happy. In this case we did everything we could do to ensure that you received a positive experience but unfortunately you can not please everyone. As far as I was aware this issue was resolved as after the checkback from the replacement no further concerns were raised and when the table was cleared both plates were empty. Had further concerns been raised I would of stepped in. I do not feel this is an accurate reflection of situation that occured and this is an unfair on a business that is still attempting to support customers in such testing times. As I have said if you wish to discuss this further please contact me generalmanager@seafishripley.co.uk

So this was always our go to chip shop as previously we lived 5 mins away and now travel to go here as it was the best... we ordered 2 chips cheese and gravy, last time they were tight on the cheese and gravy so my partner asked for a bit more than last time... they charged us for the extra! For 2x chips cheese and gravy it came to £19!! You can have full meals for this, very disappointed as we have been coming here for years and the sides (gravy etc) seem to be getting smaller and smaller for double the price! £12 anyway for chips cheese and gravy twice is enough never mind £19 for a bit of extra cheese and gravy! Definitely will not return.

Have eaten in the restaurant over Christmas, ordered in advance for collection and popped into the takeaway. The food is really good, prices are great but the service is terrible! Extremely slow. When we ate in as a family, we were there for at least an hour and a half, and that was for one course only, we bailed on dessert as it took so long for the mains to come out. When I ordered in advance for collection at a specific time, they didn’t start preparing the food until I arrived to collect it. Have just popped in to the takeaway and took at least twenty minutes to prepare the food (fish and chips only, which were already cooked), and there was no one else waiting. Has really put me off going again, not sure why this is the case as plenty of staff available, but ridiculously slow service

We have visited this restaurant many times, travelling almost an hour to get there, so decided to take my father for his 97th birthday, as he also liked the restaurant, & it was our first trip out with him since lockdown. What a let down, the lady who served us was very pleasant but the menu had changed gone was the pensioners special, so we had to pay more for a meal of poor quality. The fish was average but the chips were pale & not over hot. We had to wait about half an hour for the food. We will not be going back, very disappointing.

Booked a table for 3 for tea, as a treat for my son, we were greeted by a female member of staff who wore her PPE below her nose ! LOL what is the point of that ?? We were seated under the air conditioning unit which was freezing. The female member took our order, she forgot our drinks, we ate our mains which were small portions I had the chicken skewer, my husband & son shared the seafood platter. We ordered dessert, she forgot to place the order, which she admitted and also said they were concentrating on a large party, this is why we had been overlooked. There seemed to be a lot of younger staff milling about, the older female lady was run off her feet, and there was no front of house leadership. I kept hearing the name Alex being shouted who ever he is...... Would I eat here again NO, would I rush back NO, was it value for money, yes only because of the government initiative otherwise I wouldnt be happy if I would have paid full price. Cmon Seafish management sort your staff out .....

Hi, As you can imagine we wear these masks for a long period of time. On occasion they can slip below without noticing and this would have not been intentional as myself and the staff spend a lot of time ensuring we adhere to current guidelines to keep ourselves and customers safe. We have the air conditioning unit on as it can become extremely warm in the restaurant when we are busy. Did you request for the air conditioning to be turned off or asked to be moved? As we would have been able to accommodate this request. I do apologise that the member of staff forgot your order and i can assure you it does not usually happen regardless of whether we have a large party in. If you could let me know what date and time you was in so I can look into further. I believe the lady in question who was serving is part of our leadership time as she is a supervisor. We also always have a manager on duty. However this manager is responsible for the restaurant, takeaway and kitchen. Which is why we have a supervisor to ensure that there is leadership on the floor. I am disappointed that you felt the portions were small. Which meal was this? The seafood platter does state on the menu that this 1-2 people. The chicken skewers should come with flat bread, two skewers, salad and chips. If they did not come as above, Please let me know and I will look in to this further.

It's a long time since the wife and I have been out that way but, on the spur of the moment, we decided to drop in. It was mid week and after 2 pm so it wasn't as busy as I've seen it before. Great value deal for the over 60's which seen the wife and I both have fish n chips, a pi t of Amstel and a pot of tea all for less than £20. Enjoyed it too

This is the second time I've eaten in this restaurant and I was a little wary after reading previous recent reviews. It does seem to be hit and miss at the minute. A positive is the large car park, so at least parking will rarely be a problem. Although the hand sanitizer was there to welcome you as you walked in, no other covid procedures were apparent and there was no sign of track and trace. . . we weren't asked to write our name and numbers or scan any QR code. . . The menu is quite varied for what is essentially a fish and chip restaurant. If you don't fancy the traditional fish and chips there are burgers, salads, pasta, chicken, pies and a good selection of vegetarian options too. We ordered 2 large fish, chips and peas and 2 steak pies. The staff were friendly enough and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The food was good. The pies went down well and had plenty of meat in. The gravy, too, was singled out for praise. The amount of mash, though, was pretty pathetic, especially given its a chippy- surely they could've spared a couple more spuds? As well as mash, peas and gravy the pies were served with salad, which we found a bit random, but my partner was glad of it in the end to make up somewhat for the lack of mash! The majority of the chips were good, apart from the smaller ones, which were hard and dry. There is a small selection of desserts. I was persuaded into having the apple crumble, only to be told it is actually apple pie. I went for the cheesecake in the end. Be warned- it is very filling! I should've stuck with the apple pie. We would definitely return, but would probably make a few different food choices.

Our usual favourite chippy in the Derbyshire dales is out of bounds due to lockdown so went here in Friday 12th February for fish and chips. Arriving at 7pm on a Friday was not a great idea and after queuing outside for 20 mins they were well worth the wait. We had regular fish and chips and it was a perfect size portion for one, the fish was delicious and cooked to perfection and the chips some of the best I have ever had. Maybe looking at the previous recent reviews I hit lucky but I for one will certainly be returning. Give it a go as the new owners may have been settling into a new routine and hence the adverse reviews below.

We've only ever had takeaways from here and not for a while, so when we wanted fish and chips, we decided to eat out. It was early afternoon when we arrived and it wasn't busy. There was one person on the desk and she was serving someone. After she'd finished she went in to the kitchen leaving us standing wondering if we just sat down or waited - so we waited whilst she had a chat. When she came back I asked if we just found a table and the reply was "I'll get to you in a minute", whereupon she left us standing whilst she served two more customers who had by now come to pay bills. We were left standing like naughty schoolchildren. We very nearly walked out, but wanting to eat, we stayed put, and eventually were shown to a table. When the food came the fish was nicely cooked and the peas better than average, but it was flavourless. Together with two drinks it cost nearly £30 - definitely not worth it and it would have been cheaper to take away or even to have gone elsewhere.
