About
If you have ever been tempted by “slow food”, gourmet cuisine based on fresh local and non-industrial ingredients, you must pay a visit to the restaurant “La Macina” . Housed in San Marco D’ Alunzio, a small village with an amazing 3000-year history, this family restaurant is located in an ancient oil mill restored about 10 years ago which retains many ancient elements testifying its origins. Everything you’ll taste is local, home-made or grown in the owner’s gardens and local farms. From olive oil, to bread, from locally-raised beef, chicken or pork to all sort of fruits and vegetables ... not to forget grappa, limoncello and other local spirits. The rich list of wines includes some of the best Sicilian and Italian wines. The ambition of the owners is to preserve and promote local and traditional food products which in this valley are considered as part of the cultural heritage along with the 22 churches, 3 museums and its numerous archaeological sites.

Came here by coincidence to eat with my girlfriend. We were suggested by the very kind waiter to eat Antipasti, which apparently is their speciality and all the other local guests did the same. We were served around 12 different plates which we're all delicious and seemed really authentic. The fact that we didn't get to check the menu and the price before, made us think, that it may be very expensive - considering the high quality of the food. It was not! We had an unreal amount of amazingly tasty dishes and only paid 16€ per person for the food. Go there and enjoy the people, the wine and the food - you won't regret it!

A fantastic restaurant in a very beautiful hilltop village. The antipasti were original, creative, delicious and they kept on coming! A meal in themselves and so much more than the usual meat and cheese. Zucchini, melanzane, an amazing caponata, and much much more. Fabrizio was very attentive, explaining the different dishes and taking time to chat. Highly recommended.

We had such a great experience with this lovely and very typical Sicilian restaurant. We have been welcomed by the owner, a Sicilian gentleman who explained us the menu and helped us to pick up the best options. We went for the selection of ‘antipasti’, which was a delicious and super generous selection of tasty delicatessen (there are also plenty of options for vegetarians!). Antipasti were all amazing, with a special mention for the aubergines caponata, which was fantastic! We will definitely go back (we look forward to trying the delicious pasta!) and recommend this little gem to all our friends!

This is a lovely local hideaway serving authentic sicilian dishes. We came here at the end of October when it was fairly quiet, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Expect a very relaxed, unstructured affair and there is no menu to order from (which can mean it ends up being expensive if you're on a budget. There's no way to tell how much it's going to cost until you get the bill!) We were asked if we have any preferences and we told them we were vegetarian. We were brought lots of tasting dishes one after the other, including pumpkin rolls, arancini, a black rice dish (delicious!), spinach with almonds, caponata and many others. They were all delicious and we were extremely full! The souffles were especially good, as was the handmade ravioli. We had dessert too and finished the meal with some shots of a fig liqueur that is made on the premises - the waiter also poured us some shots of grappa. It was a lovely experience, we had a great time and would definitely come back! We felt very welcome, the kids loved it and chatted to the owner/chef about British football teams :) Overall the final bill came to around €160 for 4 of us, we had 3 courses, wine, coffee and liqueurs and we felt it was worth the spend as it was more special dining experience than you get in most places.

Awesome food. Such a wonderful kitchen. The cook personally gave us a tailor-made tour of the Sicilian specialties he creates fresh every day. We were even allowed to look at the wonderful kitchen. Must visit. Worth a detour!!!

We visited the restaurant in mid morning/lunch time. We had our hearts set on pizza initially, but we soon noticed there was hardly anyone there (perhaps too early for pizza?) But they kindly explained (in Italian) that pizza wasn't available but they could bring a selection of antipasti and we're so glad they did! We had figs in a balsamic glaze, stuffed mushrooms, mozzerella and melon balls, vegetable rice and meatballs in a tomato sauce to name but a few. The staff took a real interest in our family (especially my 1yr old), wanted to know where we were from, what we did for work etc. It was a really lovely, authentic Italian experience. Would highly recommend

Quiet local restaurant with friendly family-run service. We were starved a selection of small sharing plates that just kept coming over lunch. All cooked fresh and with care. Very tasty indeed! Highly recommend a visit.

We came to visit the beautiful village, and came across this gem of family owned restaurant: we were welcomed by the owner, he showed us around and treating us like VIPs. No menu as the food offered changes daily. All ingredients are locals and freshly made. Plates of tasty food - mainly pulses and veggies - kept on coming… we had pistachio soufflé with pumpkin juice, couscous salad, black rice, stuffed mushrooms, … to name a few!! Highly recommend!!

The place is really nice!! Is a rustic house built in two floors. I came here with my family and I was really surprised to find an unique and amazing place. The food is so delicious, there are so many plates, vegetarian and not, also the wine has a really good taste. The chef is able to cook the same food in thousand different ways and all very very good!!! The owner is very kind and make you feel welcomed and at home. Don’t forget to ask for the “amaro”, the typical Italian small alcohol taste after eating: chocolate flavor is the best! Highly recommended!!! If you have time go around the city, it is worth it!

I highly recommend visiting this place if you are ever in the area of Capo d' Orlando, Sicily. You will not be disappointed! The owner is a true restauranteur. He caters to all his clients. I watched him go from table to table talking to everyone making them feel comfortable. I ate alone but by the time I left I became friends with a lovely couple from Siracusa. I did not feel alone the whole time I was there. I enjoy eating healthy, tasty foods. This place did not disappoint. At the owners advice, I went with the Anti- pasta dishes first. Quail eggs, Cous cous, orzo with vegetables, stuffed mushrooms, soufflé just to name a few. Many of the ingredients came from the owners farm. After that, the chef made me a piece of filet pork ( Suino nero). It was cooked to perfection! I did not even need a knife to cut. I was eating it like you eat a piece of cake . Cutting the fillet with my fork. Along with that I had 1/2 litre of local red wine that was excellent. The whole meal was so fresh. Farm to table. Easily digestible because of it's freshness that 3 hour later I was hungry again!

Amazing homemade food, fresh and flavorful. They’ll bring antipasti until you die, so ask them to stop before you’re full, because they also have delicious pasta and other dishes. Nice host, great house wine and liquors. Highly recommend it!

Each bite was an explosion of taste. This was the best experience that we had so far in a restaurant. The chef was extremely friendly and he brought us all kinds of delicious Sicilian food. We let him decide on our full menu and we did not regret it: traditional taste with a modern look and technique. This place would definitely deserve a Michelin star. It is beyond tasty, beyond friendly and extremely clean. 5/5 is not enough. PS: ask for their home-made Mandarinello liquor.

We enjoyed many delicious (regional tapas style) plates for lunch. The chef used so many fresh local veggies to create little masterpieces. Our quick visit to San Marco d’alunzio was wonderful; a beautifully scenic drive and then walking the small streets, but finding this amazing restaurant made our visit extra special. A real treat.

Exceptional, delightful food, in a warm and welcoming environment. As born, bred and educated Sicilians, we found the variety, quality and uniquely authentic food absolutely mouthwatering. All dishes were carefully prepared and offered local, seasonal vegetables and ancient grains. No mass-produced food, rather each dish was a small masterpiece of local cuisine. I usually do not choose Almond Parfait as a dessert, having been disappointed more times than I can count. But I had goosebumps when tasting the Macina’s Almond Parfait - a burst of flavor in every bite. The Gelo di Limone was poetry. A call out to the owners, who helped us choose (wisely!) and treated us as newfound friends. Needless to say, this will be a new tradition for us, when coming back to Sicily.
