Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Breakfast a brilliant addition to the current Sloop menu. Went with family last week, really nice food and great for what you get, great value for money. Salmon and scrambled eggs dish highly recommended and kids loved the American pancakes. Definitely worth a visit.

Unquestionably one of the best (if not the best coastal pub in the county). As ever the food was served piping hot and carefully prepared. The staff were attendant but not intrusive and their attention to detail re food allergies was some of the best...I've encountered. Fish pie was plentiful and delicious and the bruschetta starter was garlicky and a meal in itself. I find it almost impossible to square some of the negative comments found in these reviews with my experiences over a number of years.More

Having read the reviews, we were hoping for a good meal. Sadly, we were disappointed. I ordered monk fish from the specials board. The fish was dry, overcooked and tasteless. The tender stem broccoli overcooked and I had a bout 3 sliced of sautéed potato.... My husband asked for Moules. As it was still April, still had an 'R' in the month and we were just by the sea, we thought they would be fresh. (Should have asked first, I guess). In fact they were vacuum packed, over cooked and came with a thick, white glutenous sauce. A very disappointing meal and won't go back again.More

Lovely pub, great atmosphere and friendly staff. However they stop serving food at 3pm and start again at 5pm. We arrived just after 3pm so decided to wait for 1h44min for food, based on reviews. To be honest the wait was definitely not worth the...wait. Seafoods basket was not with the price to get 2 prawns, 4 small cod courgettes and 6 pieces of calamari, we substituted the whitebait for extra calamari (included in 6 pieces). Disappointed in food only.More

Quirky pub with great food and friendly staff We both had fish off the specials board and it was very good. Plenty of parking and great location to watch the sunset over the sea

I saw a lot of reviews saying how fatty the pork belly was, but I ordered it anyway and it was incredible! The ginger goes perfectly with the sesame rice and everything about the meal was amazing. For dessert, I ordered chocolate and caramel ice...cream (I highly suggest the caramel). The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly.More

Very tasty fresh food , fast and very helpful service . We sat outside as it was busy and no tables for people with dogs were available but it didn’t spoil our experience. Fish chowder was fabulous and was gluten free lovely fresh gluten free...bread roll made my meal all the better. My partner had the fish pie and thoroughly enjoyed it . Would highly recommend this gem of a pubMore

Visited many times over the years, always a warm welcome, excellent food with a varied selection on the menu, all washed down with a very nice beer. For a Monday in February, not even half term, it was fairly busy which was great to see.

Another thoroughly enjoyable meal. This place does not seem to have a disabled entrance, and has a steep set of four large stone steps to get into the pub. Once you open the door, a roaring fire welcomes you on the right, where you can...take your dogs during the winter (the bar). And the restaurant has a wonderful ambience and is completely adorned with artefacts to remind you of the sea. There is one particular table, if you’re lucky enough to have it, you get the view across the small harbour. It is a beautiful pub and an idyllic setting. January is special because the menu is half price. It’s a very good way to get customers into the restaurant and bar. There is an extensive choice to choose from and The Bald and I decided to go Sunday lunchtime. I had fish and chips with mushy peas, and the Bald had the seafood chowder. It was magnificent and never disappoints. my batter was crispy all the way round, no soggy bottom here and the fish was white flaky and cooked to perfection. It came with a side of chips and the mushy peas and tartar sauce are a perfect accompaniment. The chowder (I stole a spoonful) was decadent, creamy, and just to die for. It come with a huge chunk of bread, and that wonderful Welsh butter, Shirgar. It is an absolute treat, full of prawns, salmon, cod, and muscles, a masterpiece. I don’t recall having had a bad meal here. The Bald is very fussy about his coffee but highly recommends it here. My cappuccino was very nice. It was lovely to see this vibrant pub, so full of people enjoying such good food. We will definitely be back.More

Visited on 29/12/2023 and cannot praise the beautiful food and staff enough. The staff were so friendly and patient with my four Grandchildren. In fact the young lady who served us was so polite and 💯 percent patient with us. The childrens food was well worth...the money as it was of an excellent quality. I ordered the fish chowder which was the nicest I have ever tasted and my daughter had the king prawns which were so beautiful and light. Thank you and congratulations to all the staff. I would like to comment on a previous review regarding the area for the locals. It is clearly signposted and I totally agree with that policy as the locals support that pub and their community all year, whereas people like myself only visit on holiday times. A total disregard of the community of Porthgain and quite frankly rude in their comments! Christmas should be a time of patience and respect for people who work in hospitality!More

Drove an hour to visit this pub, there was a table available next to the bar and when we went to sit down we were told it was for “locals only”. We said we were only sitting for a drink and the rude man at...the bar shrugged and repeated “it’s locals only” and we were told to go elsewhere in the pub where there were no tables. Never heard something so ridiculous. Will never come back here.More
