Four of us stoped here for one night to be met by a warm welcome, along with a lovely smile from Stella.
Our rooms were cosy and had everything we needed to hand. We ate a superb evening meal, everything freshly cooked with very generous portions, you will certainly will not leave hungry. Breakfast was included, Graham could not have been more attentive & he gave us suggestions of a few places locally for us to visit on our onward journey. We would thoroughly recommend and will certainly visit again in the future.

Went for lunch it was our wedding anniversary. Been there a few times the food is always very good never alters good portions.
The staff are all welcoming and efficient.
We have many meals in this part of north Yorkshire and paid a lot of money for rubbish food. We will be going again next month for husband's birthday.

Two of us staying in the village decided to call in for a evening meal.
We ordered off the specials board.
Slow roast beef with creamy mash with a port and stilton gravy also fresh cooked vegetables.
Lamb rump with creamy mash
With a mint infused gravy I also ordered a bowl of chips
Both of the meals where of a high standard compared with some so called posh restaurants
The service was also good attentive without hovering over the table.
Will definitely eat here again if ever in the area.

First visit to the Royal Oak , friendly country pub with en-suite rooms and nice staff. Room had tea/ coffee etc , clean white towels and clean bedding: large tv and free Wi-Fi. The shower was just ok but not really hot and there was option of a bath if you preferred. However we could hear everything and everyone in the bar until they went to bed at midnight. Walls so thin could hear people coming up to bed and in their rooms.
Good menu and gluten free options for Dinner , however not the same choice for breakfast as I was advised that they did not do gluten free cereals: I could have gluten free toast and the only fruit they offered were Prunes .
Check out time was 10 am with last breakfast being 09.15 am if we wanted a later check out it would be £15.00. There was parking at the rear of hotel but only for 4 or 5 cars so we had to park an the road at the front. Rooms are not serviced and you are requested to write any requests on a Post It Note and leave it on the outside of your bedroom door .

This was our second stay and compared with the first was disappointing. The location of the pub is lovely and the rooms comfortable in a traditional style. There is minimal road noise in the mornings, only agricultural traffic.
When we visited previously there was an issue with flies in the bar and restaurant, our only negative. This time they were far worse. You were left swatting them away from food and checking drinks before drinking. Speaking with staff they admitted the flies were a constant problem. On this basis alone we would not visit again. It is a shame the owners do not address the problem but they seem not to be operationally involved and not live locally.
Our other issue was the menu. It was very varied during our last visit. It is now still varied but most meals are meat heavy with unimaginative vegetables, very simple fare.

We were on holiday just a few minutes away from the Royal Oak . We took a stroll along the road for a Sunday lunch time drink arriving maybe one or two minutes after two . They stop serving lunch at two . At the bar I said I realise you have stopped serving lunch but is there any chance of a round of sandwiches . We don’t do sandwiches on a Sunday was the reply only bags of crisps. Not exactly welcoming hospitality! They weren’t exactly busy with a number of staff on hand . We saw one table being served with their main course some twenty minutes after two . So all in all they missed out on a sale of at two Sunday lunches plus drinks or a couple of rounds of sandwiches at around £9 a round all because they couldn’t be bothered to put in a little extra effort. No wonder pubs are going out of business

Jan 2023 • family
Family of 4 visited over the New Year.
Travelled over 60 miles to have lunch at this place. We ordered 4 different mains, 2 of them were lovely and 2 not so much.
The menu (sheet of A4) didn’t explain what comes with each meal, and neither did the waitress
We ended up with one smallish bowl of veggies between the 4 of us, and 1 bowl of chips
None of us knew who they were supposed to be for and it definitely wasn’t enough.
Also I ordered a shandy and it was horrible, left an awful taste.
To give credit where due, the puddings were actually really nice, but we won’t be returning, instead we’ll try somewhere else so if you read this you’ve lost a decent amount of custom, and that’s mainly down to your stingy portions of vegetables, and pathetic menu. Literally the cheapest thing that you’ll buy in, and you choose to scrimp on it - absolutely bizarre !
We left a tip as it wasn’t all bad, just not good enough to bring us back.

So disappointing … this used to be a guaranteed winner for a warm a accommodating welcome and lovely food.
Tonight I called ahead to check I’d be able to eat as I decided to walk cross country early evening 2.5 miles.
I was advised I would need to sit outside which was ok.
I arrived, on one of the hottest days of the year, and found a free table .. at 6:30pm.
Went inside said I’d like to eat, anything, just any sandwich will be fine. Table for one.
Sorry we can’t do you any food I was told. Would you like a drink? .. I ordered a pint of, what turned out to be, the worst pint of black sheep I’ve ever drank and as the lady behind the bar served me she looked very embarrassed.
I told her I had called ahead, before walking there and was advised I would be able to eat if I was happy to sit outside at an empty table she went back to the lady who had said I couldn’t eat there tonight but came back gave me my pint and made no comment.
I noted only about 10% of tables were occupied inside.
There was no real apology from the ‘lady in charge’.
Ive eaten there loads of times before … it used to be so good.
I walked back to Kirkbymoorside and went in to the Kings Head … friendly and accommodating had a wonderful Caesar salad + .. no drama.
It’s a sorry do when a single diner wanting anything to eat sitting anywhere early on a midweek night can’t be looked after by a business who, according to their website pride themselves on their Yorkshire hospitality & always pleased to welcome walkers.
Well, not in my experience.
It seems like they are working on developing the wrong reputation. ?!?

I am loathed to leave bad reviews of places during these hard times but we left disappointed. Knowing this was the only pub near where we were staying and the menu also looked stunning we rang and booked the night before, we asked for 6.30 but were asked to arrive at 6pm. No problem, or so we thought...
We arrived a couple of minutes late and were shown to our table with the "early bird menu". I love a bargain so couldn't believe my luck but my heart sank when I saw the menu. All of the fine food they offered online was not in the deal. It was instead, generally, cheap food sold at cheap prices (scampi and chips etc.).
No problem, we will just order from the main menu and have the food we wanted. Right? No! We were told as our table was at 6pm we could only order from the cheap (inferior) menu and you needed a table at 6.30 for that. OK, can we wait 15 minutes to order then? NO! We needed to order now, from that menu as they needed the tables.
So we ordered and it was every bit as disappointing as I expected; probably worse. Scampi and chips without a hint of anything green. No spoon of peas or salad garnish. Bland, fried food served with little love or joy.
What made this so perplexing is that we were not asking for the main menu at cheaper prices. They had a steak for £24 that I would have gladly ordered but instead I had to suffer two course (that is unfair, the black pudding starter was lovely) at half the cost. I wanted to spend more money!
So, if you're booking a table make sure you do not get stuck in the deal menu trap. You'll be disappointed.

Dropped in for Impromptu lunch after long walk with two dogs 5 mins before lunch stopped serving on a Saturday. Very welcoming and nothing too much trouble. Food clearly homemade and delicious soup and pie with local ales at reasonable prices. Will definitely come back again. Recommended

We were staying near the village for a few days and ate here twice during our 4 days.
On both occasions we were made to feel welcome by the staff.
We have 2 dogs so were seated in the room at the front, on both occasions the food was very good and served on hot plates which was pleasing to see.
On the first night there was a group of people in the same room as us and unfortunately children in the group were allowed to run around making lots of noise, there was no attempt by the adults to try and stop this. It made it difficult for us to hold a conversation at times and spoiled our evening.
I have no issue with children in pubs as it is the perfect opportunity for parents to teach children about acceptable behavior in such places but this really was unacceptable.
Every time we are in the area we always eat here and always enjoy the food.

Visited the Royal Oak twice this weekend and both times the staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. They were also quite prepared to offer vegetables in stead of chips and mushy peas when asked. The food was plentiful and well cooked.

My husband and I had lunch at the Royal Oak in Gillamoor today. It is a nice pub with friendly staff. We had been several times before and always enjoyed our meal. Today my husband had steak pie and chips. The pie was ok and chips alright but he was very disappointed that there were no vegetables. (he has had this meal here before and there was always a good portion of assorted veg. )When we enquired about this, the waitress just said "We don't serve veg with steak pie now) I had scampi and chips, very nice but again no vegetables, not even peas. For dessert I had raspberry roulade with raspberry sorbet which was excellent. Not sure we would go again - we like our veg!

A warm welcome from Margaret and her team in this homely yee old worlde pub. We arrived to the lovely smell of the burning log fire and were fortunate to grab the seats right next to it. The Black Sheep ale was as good as ever and it was just wonderful to chill next to the fire amongst other guests able to chat with good people around us. We booked (prior to our stay- essential) for dinner and yet again it did not disappoint with steak and ale pie together with the sea bass superb on top of equally as good starters. We ended a wonderful evening with baileys & Cointreau nightcaps.
Following a comfortable nights sleep in an immaculately clean room, we enjoyed a splendid freshly cooked breakfast. Excellent value- Highly recommended and again compliments to Margaret, her chefs, service staff and cleaners for making the stay once again very enjoyable.

Visited the Royal Oak for lunch today with some friends, very good value for money at £15.95 for 2 courses. The crayfish cocktail was delicious, the meat was so tender in the steak pie it melted in your mouth, chicken breast in a white wine sauce was superb the jam roll poly and the roulade were also very very good, would certainly recommend anyone to visit this place. The staff were very polite and friendly too. Thankyou.
