This place has an awesome vibe. It's hip and in a cool neighborhood. We tried a few different dishes and everything was very good and interesting. Great fun place to try.

Smooth reception in a very busy place, at 06:15p. Shared a heirloom tomato salad (with a simple, divine dressing) as appetizer, and took the mains suggestion: rockfish fillet with grilled caulifour and capers. Simply outstanding. No desert taken (but they looked delicious !). Good wine selection although lacking in BC choice. Flawless service and very reasonable prices for this level... More

Drinks, food and service were all good. I would have liked a bit more room, though. We were in the back and it was a bit like sardines in a can.

We stopped in without a reservation and not only got a table, but one with a birds-eye view of the bar. Our server was great, definitely paying attention without feeling that he was intrusive. Food was very good. Heirloom tomatoes, ling cod were great very good. Sole was replaced with rock fish, which with the gnocchi and lobster mushrooms was... More

Beautiful location and building. Food was quite good and the wine list was excellent. They have a separate building in the back to house larger groups/events.

I have been here several times both on business and pleasure. It has never disappointed. The last time I went for a business meal with another foodie and we were both very impressed with the food. I had a foie gras starter and it was very good, which is saying a lot for a Vancouver restaurant....it's hard to find good... More

Wonderful food and an extremely knowledgeable waitstaff in this boutique restaurant that strives to be a cut above the rest in Vancouver. From the moment we sat down til the last delicious spoonful of the heavenly dessert - this place was delightful. Unlike the highly touted Farmer's apprentice restaurant, this place. Actually seems to care about the customer, the food,... More

Unique food, on the expensive side. While enjoyable, I think there are many options in Gastown area equal in quality.

Description
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium. Chef Lee Cooper and Owner / Operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and Bar Manager Thor Paulson's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience. L'Abattoir adds to Gastown's bustling breakfast scene with a menu mixing comforting staples with hearty, unique entrees. Thirsty brunchers can sip on creative cocktails, as well as daily feature vermouth on the rocks. Non-alcoholic options include daily bottled house made iced teas. Just adjacent to L'Abattoir's regular dining room is the restaurant's stunning new private dining facility. The 1,200 sq ft. facility features historical architectural elements complimented by a contemporary design aesthetic. While large enough for 50 people seated or 70 standing, the room retains an intimate ambiance and a noise-reducing barrier blocks out the hustle and bustle of the regular dining room.

Staying in Gastown

Neighbourhood Profile
Gastown
A visit to Gastown is like turning back the clock and stepping into a bygone era. With the distinction of being Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, the many plaques that stud the cobbled streets of Gastown tell the story of its colorful past, giving Vancouver's history a more lively presence here than anywhere else. Having been originally founded around a popular worker's saloon, it's no wonder that today some of Vancouver's best micro-breweries, creative cocktail joints, and corner bars can be found in this area. Classical charm suffuses its many vintage boutiques and the brick-built structures that an army of creative professionals call home.
