Loved Whelan's Gate - great beer selection and a lovely back garden that was quiet and cool on a warm day. I had the sausage plate and it was top notch. Staff seemed a bit overwhelmed but were friendly and doing their best

new management, a new chef, and a new lease on life. There is a solid selection of craft beer (on tap and in can) and the cocktail menu is decent, but more importantly it's executed well (I had a corpse reviver last night that was damn near perfect, maybe a bit too much ice). The food is the real draw... More

I booked a spot for 12 on a Tuesday night, upstairs when their 'Muldoon' music was on, for my wife's birthday party. We loved the music, and they sang happy birthday for us when the cake was brought out. The staff were very accommodating in making reservations and preparations for the night. The food was excellent, they have great beers... More

Seven guys (in their 40s) out for a rare night of debauchery. We were the only people upstairs on a Saturday night. The staff were good. The chef made a pile off crazy food off-menu. Dude can cook. We were not being cheap and intended to stay until close, ordering food and drinking. Intoxicated as we were, we were never... More

Great place! Back to the classic Whelan's. Tuesday's sessions. Food, beer, staff, music. Good things come in small packages.

I live near Whelans, and I often find myself there for a drink or two to hang out. The staff is super friendly, and I love the atmosphere. Be sure to check out the back garden patio if the weather is nice!

Went to an old favourtive spot of mine yesterday for some lunch with a pal. Sat on the back patio & enjoyed a jug of beer with a Whelan's Burger. The server was very helpful & explained some menu changes that were in effect however have not yet been printed. The beer was fantastic however we were surprised it cost... More

Great local GTA pub! They went to great efforts to ensure the food was not in contact with my wife's allergen. The wings were really good, the Irish stew was great and the potato boats. Alas they only had Strongbow on the menu for ciders, but I'm a cider nut and figure all Irish and UK pubs should have a... More

Before you go looking for an Irish pub, decide what you want. Modern re-creations are usually fine in terms of decor & fare; others are "Irish" because of their clients/owners. Whelan's Gate is a transposed pub from Ireland. It's got it all: small bar, larger entertainment & eating room, also with a full service bar, a snug and a secluded... More

Nice atmosphere and beer - food only so-so. The bartender was friendly and there was a decent selection of beers. The food really wasn't very good.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
The go-to area for new business start-ups, the spry and creative persona of the West End thrives along its streets. Its independent boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and shops offer brands that can't be found elsewhere. Buildings with ground floor consumer spaces sport up-top artist's lofts, and the West End attracts artists, designers, and fashion industry professionals to its living quarters. It is in the cross-hairs of gentrification, but still resisting it with ironic relish. Hot deals can still be found here on furniture and knick-knacks,. Its call to culinary glory is in its well-priced homemade Polish food, hosting Toronto's go-to spots for hot pierogis and cold borscht. High Park, the largest green space in the city, is a place for dreamers and poets to wander and rest, not to mention a number of energetic actors staging outdoor plays in the summertime.
