We were looking for a good neighborhood-type place for breakfast and were pleased to find By The Way. It was a warm October day so we were seated in the tented patio space - very pleasant atmosphere. Menu had a good selection of breakfast items, and featured several variations on eggs benedict. Service was a bit slow but fortunately we... More

Before our TIFF movie, we had brunch at By the Way Cafe. It was quite busy, and we had to wait briefly for a table; people come and go fairly regularly, so the wait wasn't long. This was breakfast/brunch, so the coffee was offered and served very quickly - great! I had the Heuvos Divorciadoes, and my dining partner had... More

We went for a brunch with friends. Dishes were good. Good quality. However the staff is not very nice, unpatient and not very friendly. Still a bit expensive for students.

Needed to sit down in a cool area and this looked inviting. Busy /lively cafe with a covered open air patio. Good atmosphere. Staff worked hard. Beer was very nice with a few choices. Food was very good, Mediterranean style. Not worth a trip out of centre but if you are in the area it's well worth a visit.

We'll go a long way for a single great dish, and here we had two. The whole baby smoked eggplant in a cream sauce with fried chickpeas and walnuts will keep me up nights thinking about the great flavor and texture. The chicken livers in a tomato sauce were perfectly cooked, creamy and delicious. The patio was very nice. Our... More

I have been to this place several times over the years. Brunch is really good on weekends, they make great huevos rancheros. It has a nice patio for the summer, although a bit cramped in some tables. We went for dinner on a Saturday night and it was not busy. The food quality is good, but the portions are a... More

I would have rated this place a zero if it was possible. To start with, the man server who was working there was very rude and unwelcoming. He wasn't willing to answer our questions in a friendly manner, and instead would laugh with sarcasm. We were also denied service because we only wanted to order lattes and desert. The male... More

We visited for a late Sunday Brunch. We were offered inside or outside seating. The outside patio is covered and has a great view of busy Bloor street. We were offered a menu promptly. Only the limited Brunch menu was offered. We enquired as to what kind of herbs are in the herbs and Feta cheese omlette. The waitress stated... More

By The way has been an institution on Bloor street for decades, and its latest shift through a thoughtful renovation with an excellent mural on the main wall helps to extend the legend. You can choose pretty much anything from the menu in the confidence that the kitchen will produce a timely tasty meal for you. The service is prompt... More

Description
By The Way is a much-loved neighbourhood favourite that offers contemporary Mediterranean fare with Latin flare in the heart of the Annex. A reliable, tasty standby for generous, nourishing eats, BTW has all the meal bases covered, from breakfast to late-night fill-up. Omelettes, pasta dishes and eggs benny get lots of mention, as does the fine selection of Middle Eastern choices. The restaurant enjoys a particular reputation for its healthy focus. There's also a solid selection of vegetarian dishes. A surprisingly extensive wine list includes both house and vintage options. The space is bright and cheerful. The big corner patio fills up in the summertime.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
Midtown is a dynamic part of Toronto with some of its most stylish high-rise residences and heritage buildings. The area sees busy shoppers with bag-laden arms balancing lattes in paper cups as they travel from one luxury brand to the next, taking advantage of the proximity of high-end shops. The reflecting pools, jogging trails, and nature treks of the Rosehill Revision are always a hub of outdoor activity, and after a workout from either running or splurging, many take advantage of the spas and massage parlors Midtown has to offer. Away from the bakeries, boutiques, and glamorous old theaters of the district's center, locals use the weekend to embrace the more suburban feel of Midtown's parks, tennis courts, outdoor markets, and the manicured grounds of Casa Loma, while families indulge the area's state-of-the-art playground and learning facilities. Of course, no high-brow district is complete without a healthy counter-culture: Midtown boasts some of the wildest street art and full-wall graffiti of any neighborhood in Toronto.
