Our hopes were high as we entered as this is a pretty looking tearoom and the menu is extensive and tempting. When I ordered I was told they didn't have any of my choice, or my backup choice. Ditto for my husband. The waitress then...rattled off a long list of things they didn't have, leaving very few things left to choose from. After we'd ordered the waitress returned as she'd lost track of who she'd served. She came back again to hurl a fistful of cutlery on our table. We both plumped for the club sandwich which had good quality fillings but the bread was underwhelming to say the least. My "speciality tea" was an anonymous bag in a tiny pot. The lavatory cubicle opens up directly onto the tearoom which I found unpleasant while I was eating, especially when customers left the door open. It was also extremely noisy in the café, which isn't really their fault but it all added to my desire to get out as quickly as possible.More

We have had several lovely meals in here however our last visit was very disappointing - the breakfast was terrible. Poached eggs hard and overdone; streaky bacon underdone and not cripsy. It was cold. Not good.

Got there and the chef wasn’t even there. Food came out, cold and a missing item. Coffee was really nice! Wouldn’t go again. Very disappointed.

We came in and luckily found a table .I went to order and waited and waited , while the only one person serving laboriously made up a large coffee order of 4 cups for the person in front of me ,Eventually my turn, was asked...if it was to have inside or take away , I pointed to our table only to then be told that table was reserved ......There was no sign saying this , when I pointed this out , I was told I coild have asked, why would zip ask if an empty table was free ! The problem maybe because the place was only staffed by youngsters but clearly when queues form the same person should not have to make up coffees and also serve., and simple use of a reserved sign is elementary in running such a business..Get a responsible managerMore

We visited this morning for breakfast we had booked in advance. When we arrived there were about 30 cyclists all queuing to pay for drinks so we just stood and waited to been seen. We waited so long without any acknowledgement that I spotted my...table with my name so went and sat down on it. I approached the counter to explain we had sat down they did apologise. The menu had a sticker blocking out the items included in a full English which is frustrating. When I ordered I asked what the items were and the girl didn’t know. I asked if it had hash browns and was told no. I asked how the eggs came and she responded with ‘ I think you can choose’ - think?? So I said can I have poached? She said ‘yes I think it comes with poached’ when it arrived I was very disappointed. No mushrooms, no black pudding. There was half a tomato which was massive and a huge pot of beans. Those two items took up half the plate. One very small sausage which I believe was reheated and 2 pieces of bacon which I believe was reheated. The poached eggs had been cooked fresh and the granary toast was nice. I wish I had just had egg on toast the rest was awful. Very disappointed and not how I remember it a few years ago. Shame as such a lovely area.More

We were told upon arrival, that there'd be a wait for food. No problem, we weren't in a rush. There was no such warning however, given regarding drinks. It clearly wasn't too busy to pour drinks, because they served takeaway drinks aplenty in the 30+...minutes we sat and waited. The menu looked nothing special and the service was certainly lacking. I can only hope for those who actually got served, that the food was out of this world!More

We tried midweek to book a table for 2 for Sunday afternoon but got no response to our email and no one answered our phone call. On Sunday we decided to chance it and on entering were asked if we had booked. When we said...we had tried but got no response, there was no apology just a flustered looking young girl who decided she could seat us, but that food might be a bit of a wait. Fine with us, so she seated us gave us menus and said she’d be back to take our order. So we waited, and waited, and waited. Tried to catch her eye when she seated someone else but to no avail. We didn’t mind waiting for food but weren’t even offered a drink while we waited, and they made no attempt to take our order anyway. We gave up and left. Dreadful service.More

We visited here before Christmas, and we were all really looking forward to it due to seeing good reviews. I’d made sure I’d booked a table for 4 people, 6 days in advance - even though we were only having the standard afternoon tea, due...to it being a birthday, so thought notice would be good - this made no difference. When we arrived at 1pm, we were told to wait to be seated - even though it was quiet (only a couple of tables) and we could see our table - due to there being a reserved sign with my name on. We stood there for a few minutes, until I asked if we could just sit down as I could see the table. When seated, the “waitress” came over to take the order, even though we had no menus to choose the sandwiches from. She then went and got these, and came back to take our order. Around 5-10 minutes later, the girl came out and said they didn’t have one of the sandwich fillings, and to choose again. Why this couldn’t be mentioned before ordering! This was easily rectified, and our tea was finally brought out. 10 minutes later, the girl came out again, and said “sorry, we haven’t got any clotted cream but we’ll give you butter instead”. I can’t eat butter and what sort of tea room, has cream/afternoon tea, but doesn’t have clotted cream in?!? I would half understand if we had walked in, or if it had been late in the day, but not at 1pm when we’d booked nearly a week before! We said we’d go (expecting them to come out and say they’ve ran out of bread and teabags too next!) and they said they’d go and get some cream. Around 10 minutes later, a different lady came over and said “sorry, Asda hasn’t got any” - which was remarkably quick considering - and then continued to talk about how the lady was stuck in traffic. Which just made no sense. We ended up leaving and going to the pub. It completely ruined my nan’s birthday, and would definitely not recommend. As I say, we booked 6 days in advance, even though on the website it states for standard afternoon tea you don’t need to book - so you’d think they’d actually make sure they have the food/ingredients in! Don’t bother going here - absolute disappointment, plus the service wasn’t particularly over friendly!More

I think Christine is trying to contact the Riverside Tearoom. Christine; perhaps phone them, as maybe they're having issues with their website?
