About
With its striking black-and-white Tudor facade, the George and Dragon is an unmissable pub in every sense of the word. Located in the picturesque village of Ightham, in Kent, it serves fabulous food and drink in a genuinely historic setting - attracting visitors from far and wide. Legend has it that this is where Guy Fawkes hatched his infamous Gunpowder Plot and was later captured after fleeing London when it failed. These days, it’s the food that provides the fireworks, with a sparkling array of delicious dishes created by the pub’s talented French chef.

Returned here after a few year's break for dinner with friends. The menu was varied and there were several items I wanted to try. Several of us tried the crushed avocado on sourdough toast topped with fresh crab and it was very good. I had the Moroccan lamb shank, which was very tasty but the Moroccan influence somehow got lost. My lovely Jean opted for a second starter (the beetroot salad) with a side of chunky chips. The food was decent and the service was very good. The young lady who served us was very nice and happy to indulge in a bit of banter.
The wines are good as well. We had a bottle of picpoul was was delicious and a nice rioja too - both at reasonable prices.
A smashinh evening and we will return soon.

We booked a table a bit last minute for Sunday lunch with family that we hadn't seen for a very long time. When booking on the phone the person who answered was helpful and friendly. It was so nice to actually speak to someone as so many other venues have online booking only and you can't always get an answer the same day. We had a wonderful meal for 8 of us with efficient, friendly and helpful service. A good mixture of Sunday roasts and other pub favourites were on offer so everyone was well catered for. We are fairly local and have not been here for food before but hope this will be the first of many visits.

Lunch at The George & Dragon has always been a joy but sadly not today. I ordered a selection of charcuterie from the specials board as a starter and was presented with a half inch thick slice of salami and a slice each of cold roast beef and pork, four pieces of bread, a bowl of olives and sad little spoonful of salad. The usual French chef would have had a fit! I think his stand-in should Google charcuterie. It refers to finely sliced meats such as salamis and parma type and smoked hams and so on and one might also expect pâtés, olives, gherkins and the like. Really shouldn‘t have been on the menu. To give them their due the cost was removed from the bill. My Labrador very much enjoyed her unexpected treat!

Today I took friends here for Sunday roast after a good previous visit a few years ago, I booked a table for 4pm but on arrival was told they had run out of all roasts, which I was surprised at due to booking in advance, this left just fish mains or a burger to choose from, but the chef did agree to do steak. My friend advised she had a severe allergy to tomatoes and was upset her Main course still came with tomatoes on, the waiter apologised and offered to take this meal off our bill. If that wasn’t enough on ordering coffee at the end, the waitress said there was no milk. That was the final straw. We couldn’t fault the waiting staff, they were very attentive and apologetic on the kitchens behalf. Just disappointed about this experience.

BOOKED FOR LUNCH FOR 11 of us portions very small the chicken linguinie
was a very small offering and should have come with spinach . We asked where the spinach was to our server she said she would ask the chef we got no response. Also it was almost cold and the chicken very dry . Very dissapointing not cheap for child size portions. Will not be returning.

Visited for Sunday lunch yesterday and from the moment we arrived it was a wonderful experience. Staff attentive, friendly and welcoming. Our Sunday roasts were absolutely delicious (both chose the beef brisket), we also enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding. Would certainly recommend and hope to return one day!

If only all pubs were like the George and Dragon. More than just a pub, it’s the heartbeat of our community. Even in a COVID world with the most stringent of measures in place to keep everyone safe, it has managed to retain the familiar, comforting, homely feeling that only a good pub can do. For non locals and locals alike, the food and cosy atmosphere are an absolute winner. Our friends who don’t live locally always insist upon dropping into the pub for lunch when they visit for a weekend. The food is incredible - particularly the Sunday roasts and the seasonal specials. The staff are all fantastic, the drinks top notch. I genuinely cannot praise the G&D highly enough.

I visited today with a very elderly friend who fell on the step up into the pub.luckily she wasn’t badly hurt, bruised cheek, swollen lip, but the staff and other customers were so amazing rushing to help. Nothing was too much trouble. My friend made a good recovery after sitting down with a glass of water brought by Lucy who was super, so kind and helpful, and we went on to have a tasty lunch. I would definitely recommend the pub, cute old building, the staff, and the choice of menus was very good too.

We were driving past and decided to drop in for lunch because we like the look of the establishment. We were warmly welcomed and and our drinks order was taken without delay and our drinks were served quickly. There was a good choice on the menu. My wife is Gluten Free but this did not cause any problem. My wife had sea bass and I had scampi. The food was well presented and tasty and the portion sizes were ample and good value for money. A bonus was that the bar is a dog friendly area. A very good lunch served, efficiently, by friendly staff.

Went in as live locally for a drink and potentially to eat. Good free parking, friendly staff and good selection of beer. However, very poor menu- basic pub food with no originality. Decided not to eat when saw that for a selection of peas with fish and chips an extra £2 was charged and for onion with a burger £1. Food not cheap and to have to pay more for basic extras is taking the micky

We booked here last minute for Sunday lunch. The pub is in a very pretty location and has a fine history, but the interior feels soulless, a little cheap and entirely lacking in ambiance. It is pretty unwelcoming and utilitarian and certainly doesn't live up to its location/exterior.
Staff, however, were lovely and both friendly and efficient. Starters and main courses were really tasty and well cooked, with decent portions too. Dessert was a little disappointing as the quality wasn't as good. I suspect in the apple crumble the filling was either brought in pre made or used tinned apple instead of fresh.
All in all, savoury was good, sweet wasn't, service was good, dining room wasn't, so all in all I wouldn't go again

Stopped off for a bite to eat at the George and Dragon at lunch time on route home from Sevenoaks. Had a very enjoyable lunch in the new patio area in the sunshine served by a very pleasant young waitress. Will visit again to try out the evening menu sometime. Recommend.

We were slightly worried about going to a pub for the first time since lock down but our fears were groundless. The tables had been re-organised to allow for social distancing, the waiting staff were well organised, friendly and efficient. The food was its usual high standard, we had a very enjoyable evening.

Visited early evening just for a snack and it was lively with people propping up the bar just having a drink watching the sport on television. Dogs and children welcome too. You can eat in the bar area but they have a separate restaurant area too. Small area outside with benches and chairs with a carpark. Staff very friendly and helpful and food was good.

We love the G&D. A very welcoming pub, excellent staff, good food and some nice beers. Good selection of wine too. We all four decided to revisit the 80’s and have scampi and chips with homemade tartare sauce. First time any of us had had that particular dish for many years but it was excellent
