About
With its striking black-and-white Tudor facade, the George and Dragon is an unmissable pub in every sense of the word. Located in the picturesque village of Ightham, in Kent, it serves fabulous food and drink in a genuinely historic setting - attracting visitors from far and wide. Legend has it that this is where Guy Fawkes hatched his infamous Gunpowder Plot and was later captured after fleeing London when it failed. These days, it’s the food that provides the fireworks, with a sparkling array of delicious dishes created by the pub’s talented French chef.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We love the G&D. A very welcoming pub, excellent staff, good food and some nice beers. Good selection of wine too. We all four decided to revisit the 80’s and have scampi and chips with homemade tartare sauce. First time any of us had had...that particular dish for many years but it was excellentMore

The George & Dragon and everyone I met were fantastic. I met a friend for lunch and we decided to have the onion and red current soup and it was truly outstanding, very well done to your amazing Chef. It was served by a very...happy to help lady and the service at the bar was super friendly, professional all outstanding, even when I raised the idea of a sparkling non-alcoholic wine (maybe Noughty for our next visit !!) Everywhere was thought about, considered, sparkling clean and well cared for. A true gem of a place which I really look forward to visiting again soon, 3 cheers for everyone involved, an AMAZING visit, thank you very much to all !!!More

Felt it was time to give a shout out to our local. Always a warm welcome and good food at the G&D. The gravadlax and duck were very tasty. Check out the entertainment as well, always something to look forward to.

Visited early evening just for a snack and it was lively with people propping up the bar just having a drink watching the sport on television. Dogs and children welcome too. You can eat in the bar area but they have a separate restaurant area...too. Small area outside with benches and chairs with a carpark. Staff very friendly and helpful and food was good.More

We only discovered the George and dragon recently and have had the best fish and chips in a long time. The staff are very friendly and attentive. We like the menu changes regularly and the special boards are exciting.. highly recommend.

Went in as live locally for a drink and potentially to eat. Good free parking, friendly staff and good selection of beer. However, very poor menu- basic pub food with no originality. Decided not to eat when saw that for a selection of peas with...fish and chips an extra £2 was charged and for onion with a burger £1. Food not cheap and to have to pay more for basic extras is taking the mickyMore

This pub is the epitome of excellent customer service Staying nearby, and on the recommendation of the accommodation providers, we booked a table for two consecutive nights. Telephone booking was achieved effortlessly and on arrival on the first night we were offered a choice of...tables. The warm greeting set the tone for the evening. The member of staff serving us was very attentive - I think she was the one who took the booking- and the food was first rate. The choices, the cooking, the presentation were all excellent and the prices very reasonable. After the meal my wife went outside to the terrace for a cigarette. Partially disabled by a brain tumour she was disappointed that in the smoking- designated area there were only uncomfortable and, for her, inaccessible, picnic benches rather than wooden tables and dining chairs nearer to the pub entrance. On leaving she mentioned this to one of the staff. If you want to know how to handle customers’ complaints take a leaf out of the George and Dragon’s book. Next evening, when we arrived, we immediately noticed the outside seating had been reconfigured. More comfortable tables and chairs nearer to the doors were now available to smokers. On arrival, I think Dan was waiting to greet us and to tell us of the new arrangements. We noticed, we said, and thanked him profusely. He then seated us by a door with immediate access to the outside space and was friendly but never intrusive throughout the evening. Again, the meal was excellent and the pub itself has managed to achieve a great blend of comfortable, spacious dining within a setting proudly showing off its historic pedigree. Residents of Ightham, and I envy them, must be proud to have this as their local. Elegance, history, great food and stellar service - you cannot want for more.More

As always the staff at The George & Dragon attend (and remember from visit to visit) their clients likes and needs. My guest lives in Jersey and completely enjoyed his Christmas Lunch. In fact he was still talking about it when I dropped him at...Gatwick for his flight and has asked to go there during his next visit in February. The George & Dragon is my go to restaurant for both myself or with guests , for their friendly service and great food.More

First visit and we all absolutely loved it. Lovely atmosphere, nice decor, beautiful building and the food was delicious. Staff were friendly/welcoming, portion sizes good and reasonable prices. Parking was a bit of a worry as we only just found a space but the pub/restaurant...was very busy being a Saturday night so this was obviously why. We will definitely go again, can't wait.More
