Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very charming hidden treasure in Bay Roberts. One minor detail I found missing at breakfast was a selection of marmalade, jams or peanut butter among the condiments for my toast. Otherwise it was an excellent experience and I wound it recommend it as a place...to eat when in the Bay Roberts area.More

This is a fantastic find! The ladies are charming and everything is cooked fresh. Despite having eaten lunch, we couldn't resist the toutons and pancakes. Both were the best we had ever eaten in Canada. Wish we had tummy space to try other items on...the menu!More

I have been to Mad Rock on several occasions in the past. The food is always decent but the charm of the little cafe in the woods is what brings us back. However, today's experience was unfortunate and worth sharing. The first thing I noticed...upon entering was a sign on the bathroom door stating that it was "out of service". When we inquired with the staff, an older gentleman (Owner) from the kitchen told me it was working and the sign was to stop hikers of the near by trail from using his washroom. Ironic, given most of his business is due to hikers from the trail. We were staying for lunch so it didn't affect us as we were allowed to use the facilities. We had lunch and then ordered dessert. While eating our pie (one each mind you) and drinking coffee, the older gentlemen reappeared and told my wife and I that we were not eating our pie fast enough and he was losing business as a result. When we tried to question him on his understanding of the situation he was extremely rude and would not let us talk cutting my wife several times. We felt the need to chat with him as we thought surely he must be confusing us with someone else as we just spend over $60 on lunch and dessert. We could not get a word in and basically told us to leave. It is sad to say but I think the owner is struggling a little with reality and has lost the plot. We were there less than an hour to eat lunch and dessert during a busy period and not sure how we could have meet his expectation of timely pie eating. I get business owners are under stress given the current economy but there are much nicer ways to handle his perception of the situation. My wife and I were very upset at how we were treated. We do not recommend spending your money here.More

What an adorable café! Located on the most picturesque, off-the-beaten-path . Our meals were all delicious, and the service was next level in warmth and hospitality. A Must Try are the toutons as they are literally award-winning, and now we know why!

We got ours to go one day and ate them at Mad rock watching the water splash in the rocks. Of you’ve never had a touton it’s fried dough. Make sure you get it dressed as it comes with butter and molasses that way! Cute...little cafe.More

Totally unexpected. Very charming and authentic little mom & pop restaurant in the middle of no where, we Stopped in for breakfast after following Trip advisors directions for restaurants near me. They serve all day breakfast plus they have a lunch menu. All food is...homemade and delicious. We had to try the toutons and they were delicious. They came a bit after breakfast but. It a big deal. We also purchased a jar of homemade blueberry jam.More

If you like very bland, tasteless food made without love this si the place for you. EVening adding 1/2 tsp of pepper to the soup did nothing for it. Spouse had the cafe special; the beans were by far the best of what was on...our table, although my own is far better. The server who seated us wiped her bare hand across the table but did not wipe it with any cleaner/disinfectant, despite the many, many crumbs, or COVID protocols; had to ask the person who took ourorder to clean the table Bay Robert's must have better eating establishments than this.More

The café special of touton, fish cakes and home made baked beans is a complete and delicious meal. The staff is extremely friendly, the atmosphere great and the prices very reasonable. I will be returning. Go there for a meal either before going on the...trails that have an entry point next to the restaurant or go for that hike first.More

We found this little gem while looking for a lunch spot in Bay Roberts. There is no possible way to be disappointed here. Our group had baked beans and fish cakes as well as the fish & brewis. Everything was delicious. The service was fabulous...and the cook who quite possibly was the owner came out and told us the cutest joke. We loved it here and it’s rated among the top restaurants we have visited in our travels!More

The entire experience of eating at Madrock Cafe was delightful from start to finish. My husband had fishcakes and baked beans; I had the pea soup and we shared toutons. It was all delicious, particularly the toutons. We enjoyed a conversation with the owner's husband/head...cook and Dawn who was our server. I managed to get a few details on the touton recipe and look forward to impressing a few expat Newfoundland friends. We highly recommend this restaurant for the good food and undeniable charm.More

Wonderful atmosphere, great out of the way location, however had to wait over 30 minutes for our coffee and tea. Only 6 other people in the restaurant, but the servers did not seem to mind leaving us waiting. When our meals finally arrived everything was...cold or barely luke warm. I had an omelet, cold and tasteless. Flat as a pancake and burnt on one side. My wife's bacon was cold and the eggs only luke warm. The toutons were not fully cooked, doughy inside, and not at all what we expected. After hearing a lot of good things about this restaurant we were truly disappointed and hope we just happened on a bad day because other than the food and service the place is really worth visiting.More
