First time here for years and really impressed. Proper old fashioned restaurant feel with owner/manager coming round to talk. Great extensive menu, delicious food and excellent service, will definitely be back.
As title, always a friendly and welcoming crew..waiters always interact with you and the chef..well never had a bad meal or experience here. P;ease see the comprehensive menu... the two ladies had the fish, the husbands, the pork dish..all brilliantly served and cooked. With tyhree...starters, 4 mains and a couple of bottles of great wine, coffees and a brandy..plus a well deserved tip for the 'entertainment', a smidgen over £250.00..thanks again.More
Woooow what a fabulous meal and the staff were so perfectly attentive . The menu was understated, I have never enjoyed Octopus anywhere in the world more than at "The Gables" . Then Proper Lobster meat in Ravioli was also stunning. Theo, the main man..., led his team with total confedence. What a fantastic team .Ten stars and that's out of five. We will be back! ,More
Have dined here, local to us, no more than a 5 minute drive away, on quite a few occasions..my wife's milestone (?) birthday with about 30 guests last year was absolutely first class..never ever had a night not to remember here. I have mentioned in...previous restaurant reports for 'Trip', a couple who retired as millionaires, after very many years as top class publicans; sadly the lady of the house now deceased, but after many years retired, happily in Southern Spain. She always impressed upon me, the simple fact that when you are involved in the hospitality sector..you must always seek to welcome guests remembering names, as you would, a good friend, when entertaining in your own house. This attitude permeates every member of staff to my mind at the Gables. You are always greeted warmly, service and all staff attitude is positive towards the client's well being. As intimated, Five of us dined here, my wife and I, two close friends and the husband's widowed mother, ostensively for the wife's birthday in a couple of weeks..his excuse for generally paying against my protests yet again..who wouldn't want friends like this..entertaining, as is the couple and the mother and one leaves this brilliant place, in a happy state ..and that's not the alcohol! Four of us had starters.. mine a 'Special' off the menu,..a very large plate of white bait, beautifully presented with a generous salad, with all the trimmings..three others had the prawns and I believe one the calamari. Clean plates! For mains, I had the Porchetta (slow cooked pork belly, with cabbage, prunes and crispy shallots..plus French Fries..the other three had Swordfish, with one the Rigatoni..all delicious..Top Notch Fayre! For desert, three Ice creams and one White Chocolate Cream Brulee. The restaurant is in the Mediterranean style..beautifully decorated..toilets, always an indication, spotless. There is music on Fridays, so beware if you want a very quiet meal..not excessively noisy I understand, although I've never sampled, preferring the 'entertainment' of conversing and laughing with good friends! This Restaurant is not cheap, neither excessively priced for the quality of the fayre and presentation, plus a chef, who by rights should be excessively paid for his / her skills and creations. Honestly said, if you don't have a brilliant night in this Restaurant..I think you must be a very sad and depressed person..if you are, go there and 'pretend'..guarantee you'll come out much happier..and full..care if you have Starter and main..portions are generous.also very modest priced pasta meals / special Burger: Do see the Website. No not related to anyone in the Restaurant, just a very happy client to have been entertained by the staff and appreciative of an excellently run business: I say this as a long retired Corporate Regional Bank Manager, having nearly 40 years experience of sanctioning support for many medium to large businesses in the Hotel and general Hospitality Sector: So well done Manager, Chef & Staff in the 'Gables'.. Top Notch!More
Another great night at The Gables. Food was spot on as always. I have never had a bad meal in this place. Best restaurant in the area by far. Love the banter from the waiters. Thoroughly enjoyable birthday meal x

Sunday lunch great staff lovely atmosphere music perfect starters delicious Roast beef delicious soft quality great selection vegetables apart from roast potatoes same as last time we visited soggy brown inside tasted stale not hot.
Lovely 3-course meal here for my partner’s birthday. Food was delicious, service fantastic and the atmosphere vibrant and lively. My steak for my main was very good, Georgia’s mushroom rigatoni the standout of all the dishes. No car park that I could see, but across...the road is the village hall car park/cricket club car park, we parked in there fine, just in case you aren’t sure.More
Visited again last night with my husband and we’re greeted with a very warm welcome. I had the king prawn starter that was superb and my husband had the mozzarella special . I had the salmon for main and my husband had the cod both...were absolutely delicious. We shared a chocolate orange mousse with honeycomb crumb which was superb. All the waiters are very attentive without being intrusive and had a bit of banter with them. Looking forward to returning again very soon. Highly recommended, a little pricey but you get what you pay for.More
Excellent food. Excellent service. Run by Theo who is normally there and in consequence everyone knows their part. Great traditional restaurant.
Fantastic evening. Staff brilliant very attentive and friendly , food excellent. Best venue to celebrate any occasion or just to indulge yourself to a great night out.
Firstly, I am somewhat amazed at the reviews theis venue has based on our visit on Saturday evening. We arrived 45 minutes early for our table for 4 persons at 7.30pm as I had called ahead at lunchtime asking if they had a bar area...that we could sit and select from the menu in advance of being seated in the restaurant. I was given the impression that they had a lavish area for this purpose. However, this was not the case and we were shown to our table on arrival which was probably the worst location in the restaurant that was sparse of diners at that time. I will elaborate on our table location as it made for a negative night. It was a circular table placed in a “gap” between the original restaurant area and what appeared to be an extension to the restaurant. This gap did have curtains that could have been closed which would have curtailed guests and staff squeezing between the wall and one of our chairs but when asked the Owner said he would not close them……. In fairness, “Theo” the Owner did offer the choice another two alternative tables but both were in no better location! We sat and ordered drinks and were provided with menus. The drinks arrived in a timely fashion and were made fine. I also ordered some wine which was decanted and allowed time to breath before being served. The wine was an Amorone but the year did not warrant the price he was charging but nonetheless was quite good. We placed our food order and in doing so I asked if chef would add a simple fried egg to top the steak I had ordered. I was told by Theo that he was down a number of staff on the evening shift and could not provide the egg. How many people would we have needed to fry an egg???? To be honest the whole experience was not worth almost £500.00 even though the food fine. We also found it disturbing the way Theo tried to control the waiting staff - this may have been because they were young or new to the role but we felt that the staff did a good job and didn’t need micro-managing! I am always curious when a front of house individual, who gives the impression he is in total control, loses the plot mid service. I did tell Theo I would give a poor review and he pretty much dismissed me so I dug a little deeper and it would appear the restaurant has suffered financial issues in the very recent past…….. this information is in the public domaine through Google. All in all we were so disappointed with a venue that appears to have a wealth of happy diners from their reviews……. It’s NOT that good Guys!!!More
Having driven past The Gables more times than I care to remember, each time saying that we really must try it, I’m pleased to say that we’ve visited 3 times in the last few months and have not been disappointed. We’ve visited with both friends...and family and each time the food has been spot on and the service is second to none Why did I leave it so long!More
We had been to The Gables maybe 25 years ago and it was somewhere a bit special to take the other half to celebrate her birthday. Service was friendly and attentive, the food and drink was excellent (as was the coffee). We should go back...more often. I had to be very convincing, however, when I pointed out that my meal had not been charged for (almost as if they could not believe that a mistake had been made. Well worth a visitMore
