Very friendly barmaid and rustic interior. Those are the good points. Bad points - freezing cold on s chilly day, rickety and dusty furniture, empty interior and the worst bit....pretty vile food in the shape of a burnt, microwaved fishcake and pies that were virtually...More

Most reviewers have been positive so I wonder if it was just bad luck. Sunday roast chicken doesn't normally consist of tasteless (boiled?) chicken breast with bacon. Our other three roasts were in the 'OK But Certainly Not Brilliant' category, portions being a bit smaller...More

One Sunday after leaving Down House which was the former home of Charles Darwin we came here for lunch. I would recommend pre-booking as the place was very busy but we were lucky that there was one table for two available. Nice and clean with...More

Nice old pub. Friendly atmosphere. Nice food ( we had the homemade fishpie and salmon fishcake, then finished with a lovely bread and butter pudding). Service was friendly and efficient, though the waitor during the 2nd round (dessert and coffee) looked a bit stressed. Nice...More

ordered food, was undercooked and cold in the middle. Food had to be sent back to be re cooked, came back pretty much the same. My partner was unwell following consumption of the food. Disappointed with the quality of the food overall.- couldn't eat it.

Visited for lunch for the first time today. Service was friendly but slow and flustered. Steak was very dry - asked for medium. Was told it was medium rare when finally delivered at table but was more well done and leathery. Burnt tomatoes and onions...More

We ate here after visiting nearby Downe House. I had the roast, my girlfriend had the fish and chips. Both were fine, but not exceptional- the roast comes with 'help yourself' vegetables (you're welcome to as many as you like), which were enjoyable but not...More

The George and Dragon has a very good family feel to it and makes a great stop off after a visit to Charles Darwin’s house. The staff are very welcoming indeed, the coffee was excellent , the lunch for all four of us was very...More

Description
The George & Dragon is a traditional country pub nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Downe, near Bromley. Famously known as the home of Charles Darwin. He resided in the old section of the pub when he was looking for the right property in the area. After finding Down House he then went on to frequent the pub where he based his club to help those in financial need. We love our history but we love our food and drink even more. We have a wide variety of real ales, lagers and fine wines on offer. Alan, our cellar man, has 40+ years experience and keeps a tasty Real Ale which currently are Timothy Taylors Landlord, Harveys Sussex Best, Fullers London Pride, and we also have a guest ale on rotation. We've recently added an exciting wine list to our collection which has a fantastic range of wines for you to enjoy. Whether you want accompany your meal with a bold Malbec, Chablis or enjoy a Prosecco with friends we have some quality wines to suit your taste. Food is our passion and all of our menu is homemade. We try to match the traditional pub with a traditional menu so pies are our main speciality with seven options currently available. We do have to warn our customers to bring a healthy appetite with them as our portions are on the generous side.
