Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Finally managed to eat here (definitely book, every time we've popped in on the off chance they've been fully booked). The food was great and they're very accommodating of allergies, which was a refreshing change. The portions are plentiful and there's a good range of classics and a few twists too. We were well looked after by Alex who was attentive without being overbearing and handled all our (many) queries with patience. The ploughman's I ordered could easily have served two, and my friends all struggled to finish their mains, definitely good value for money. We shall be back!

The pub is under new management. There are now three ales on Masterbrew, Spitfire and Go for Gold. Lesley has created a new menu and the pies are truly magnificent! So far I’ve tried the chicken and mushroom, steak and ale and steak and merlot. The Sunday roasts at £12.95 are also well worth investigating! She also makes savoury pastries and a host of other quality main meals. Try to leave room for dessert. You won’t be disappointed!

Called late on the off chance we could get a table for a large family. The Artichoke were only to happy to rearrange tables to fit us into the restaurant area of the pub.
Warm, welcoming and cheerful staff.
Even with a few noisy children singing along to the background music!
We all ordered roasts, chicken, pork and lamb on the menu, vegetables were cabbage, cauliflower cheese, swede and carrot mash and broccoli, all cooked to perfection, there was plenty of food on the plates even for the hungriest of husbands!
Chatter ceased and plates were cleaned, pudding ordered home made brownies (a brownie only made in dreams!) ordered with squirty cream, pouring cream, ice cream and even custard, sticky toffee pudding could have fed 2 (if you were generous to share!) .
Staff were attentive and the final bill was a good price for the amount of food and drink that 11 people consumed.
To sum up...
A great place to spend time with family and friends and we would highly recommend.

It started off well.......
We went here to celebrate a milestone birthday, there were 15 of us, we had all pre booked our meals...
When we first entered this quaint olde pub pub it seemed idyllic, a log fire burning, beams everywhere and a pleasant atmosphere.
The first shock was the price of a drink...£5.30 for a bottle of desperado, £25.50 for 3 other drinks.
At 5pm we went into the dining room, we came outcatcalmost 8 ! In the meantime someone had put more wouldvon the fire but it only smouldered, leaving everyone and everything smelling of smoke, you could actually see the smoke throughout the pub. You could certainly feel it in your throat and eyes..
The food was below standard, some of our group had Gammon which was cold, some had Mushroom wellington that was served with cold vegetables. The only positive seemed to be the fish and chips, which being deep fried should of been hot.. the service was terrible, partly due to the fact that the barman who served usbon arrival was now serving our meals.. as previously mentioned, it took almost 3 hours to serve our three courses..
When we tried to pay our part of the bill we were told it couldnt be broken diwn to individuals even though they knew well in advance who had ordered what..
Its not somewhere on this visit that I would recommend nor would I re visit..

We visited here after a long walk. We were greeted by friendly young man, who told us it was his first day. He was doing well. We were then met by the new owner Lesley, she was really friendly and helpful. She had only been there a matter of days and was finding her feet, with stock on order and empty barrels we were still given a good drink and Lesley went out of her way to rustle us up a meal in the kitchen. A tasty scampi and chips. We chatted and she has great ideas for her new venture. I hope she is well supported and people visit. The pub is full of character and Lesley seemed a lady who was going to give it her best shot. Good luck. 😊

A great little country pub serving great food.
Sunday lunches were good value & tasty. Paying extra for cauliflower cheese was fine as it was of good quality & cheesy!
It’s a small place so be sure to book.
A shout out to our waitress, she was warm, Northern & friendly!!

We walked for an hour to reach this pub having seen good reviews. As we approached a party of four were leaving& I heard them say that was bad, very poor food, we won't be coming back. However we were tired& hungry so we went in. Service was adequate, but the meal was poor. We chose a Mediterranean platter to share. It was described as breads (we had 2 slices of brown toast! ) olives, houmous, grilled vegetables, and meats or cheese £16.95.
When it arrived there was no meat or cheese, which made it a very overpriced dish! I questioned this with the bar staff, who was unsure, but checked with the cook. There was a discrepancy between the handheld menu ( no meat or cheese,) & the garden chalkboard menu which clearly stated there was. To be fair, they did give us some meat, hand carved ham which was nice, but yucky processed salami. Not the quality or experience we were hoping for.
We sat in the garden, if you can call it that, with sticky tables& benches and a view of the bins.
Really disappointing. Don't know if it was the chefs day off, but I really wouldn't recommend this pub for eating. It certainly wasn't worth the 2.5 mile walk to reach it.

Came here for my nephews 7th birthday for a Sunday roast. Food was excellent - my brother is lactose intolerant and the roast and caramel cheesecake catered for him perfectly. She also made an extra special dessert for my nephew which went down a storm! The whole pub sang him happy birthday and the chef made a big fuss and made us feel very welcome and special. Would highly reccomend!

We used to come here a while back, then stopped coming about 10 years ago when new owners made everything from the freezer. It has now been taken over again by Holly and has an amazing new chef Paula. We decided to give it another go after being very impressed with the new menu and oh my goodness, it was fantastic. They were incredibly accommodating, splitting a Valentines sharing mixed grill for my husband into a dish for one (but still would have served two!) and I had hunters chicken. Both were immensely enjoyed, everything fresh and magnificently tasty/juicy/cooked to perfection.
Pudding was wonderful (pictured) and we will be back very soon to sample more of the menu. So pleased this has been brought back from the brink to be a fantastic place to eat

In the run up to Christmas this is a pub that could not serve a gin and tonic as they had run out of tonic. They would have to send someone down to the local shop to get some first. Restaurant was cold. There were no pies available. Soup served cold. The I ordered scampi from the specials board. Served in bowls on a slate. No sauces or accompaniment with the dish, everything had to be requested, including soup spoons. There is nothing positive I can say.

Arguably the best roast dinner in Christendom. Simples. Great food with a riot of flavours which rampage on the tongue. I’d recommend the berry succulent roast beef but I have also tried all of the available meat over the past few monts. The apple crumble and custard is a firm favourite, as is the cheeseboard which boast three cheeses, pickles etc. With a warm welcome offered by Holly and her team, friendly service, a fabulous new chef, Enrico who deserves to be the envy of the Artichoke’s competitors, all in the setting of a 17th Century quintessentially English pub, serving England’s oldest brewery (Shepherd Neame) beers, a wine list to suit every palate among other beverages. The pub source much of their food from local producers, promoting the local economy. Do your tastebuds a favour, and they will love you forever!!

Can here today for our second visit and the bumbling buffoon spilled drinks on myself and my fiancé literally just as we sat down , stood there while it soaked up and mumbled I’m sorry , the girl was the only one who offered us another table , our clothes and possessions were wet and sticky , they cleaned up with paper towel , waited one hour for food , my fish was disgusting, greasy, oily and tasted watery , very disappointing. Staff are not trained and had to be told what to do , 2 people to clean 4 small windows. I wouldn’t eat here again . We had to explain exactly what was wrong with the food , it got taken off the bill but I felt like I was under investigation for not liking the food

The service was excellent all the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful but both of our food was rubbish and over priced. Pizza sounded great but tasted like it had come straight from Iceland. Caesar salad was a chicken salad didn’t include Parmesan and croutons which were so greasy they were inedible. The setting is nice and if passing I would stop for a drink but would not eat there again.

My Dad has lived in the village 50 years and I grew up there. We popped in some months ago the first week the new owner reopened the pub even before there was a menu but she did us two bowls of goulash and it was superb. Then today we want back and had the braised lamb in mint gravy, delicious! I will be dropping by for lunch every time I visit! Thank you

Very helpful on arrival, I am disabled, the service was excellent, we only wanted a light lunch, my wife had a beefurger and I had a cheese nd bacon baguette. The beefurger was superb my wife said the best she ever had, served with beautifully light tasty chips and a side salad and a home made sauce which was lovely My baguette was perfect. I ordered a real ale beer which was top quality and my wife had a cider and it was perfect. This is a pub if am within 10 miles I will eat there it was faultless.
