About
Sadly, The Crown, Kingsclere is now closed. We have loved every minute of our six and a half years here: however, the challenges of operating as an independently owned pub in the current financial climate means it's now time to close the doors. Thank you to everyone for their company and support over the years. Suzanne & Nigel

As a large group of 17 without a booking for Sunday lunch we weren't hopeful of finding somewhere with enough room for us. The Crown were absolutely fantastic - although they were fully booked in their main dining area, they offered us another room that they explained they use for big groups and special occasions. It was wonderful, far more than we had hoped for. The staff were busy (it being a popular pub for Sunday lunch) but made us feel instantly welcome and were friendly and attentive throughout the afternoon. The food was spot on for a post-walk meal, generous portions of hearty home-cooked fare all at very reasonable prices. Will definitely be back!

The pub was not to busy and the tables were spaced nicely and all other covid-19 precautions were good. Service was great and we soon had everything ordered and it wasn't long before the starters arrived ,unfortunately one of the small bowls had cracked in half ! This was quickly replaced with a fresh starter, everyone was happy and enjoyed their meals . Overall we were very happy with our evening out and would be happy to revisit again.

First meal out after the November lockdown. A great meal supported by very clear, enforced and clearly well thought out COVID procedures which felt very safe. The food was superb and the lamb shank huge and very tasty as was the apple pie. Topped by great service and value. We are so lucky to have such a resource in the area.

erday and we were a little unsure. No need to be. The distancing measures that have been set up here are effective, clear and well maintained by the staff. We were very well looked after and nothing was too much trouble. We ate outside in a great smoke free area and felt very safe and looked after. The food was super. I went for a daily special which would not have looked out of place in a London bistro. The fish and chips smelt and tasted fantastic and we all had huge portions. Two of our group had different vegetarian options which they both loved. Topped off by good beer and all great value. Thanks, we will be back 😷☺️

Lovely pub and lovely people but what a disappointment with the food quality. We ordered the Mac n cheese for my 4 year old daughter and on arrival of this dish, the pasta was hard and my daughter couldn’t eat it. When raising this with the waitress, there was no apology but, “I will raise it with the chef”? When she returned after speaking with the chef, she went on to explain that they cook pasta, Al dente style! Such a disappointment in the service at this point. Who serves hard pasta to children? The bill arrived and there was no offer to deduct the cost of the child’s meal!? I challenged this and then it was, “I will need to speak to the boss”! Why should customer service be so awkward? I didnt mention the under cooked pastry on the pies. Wouldn’t recommend this place

Hi Nick, it was lovely to meet you and your family last Saturday, although such a shame to read your review. We’re sorry to read that you didn’t enjoy your lunch with us although, we weren’t made aware of the issue with your daughters’ macaroni until the end of your meal, which given your disappointment we thought you would have raised with our team when your meals were checked on. However, at the time you advised us that everything was fine with all your meals. There were also further opportunities when we brought drinks to your table or when you ordered another drink at the bar. We really wish you had, as we would happily have changed the macaroni or meal choice for her. It is normal practise for team members in hospitality to check with supervisors etc. before giving a refund and there was no dispute in removing the charge for the meal from you bill, this was done immediately. We’re also puzzled as to your comment regarding the undercooked pastry on the pies, as on clearing your table one plate was completely empty with just a little pie case left on the other. As a vegan suet pastry, the texture is different to a traditional shortcrust.

Very poor food at high prices. The roast beef served up was very sub standard, over cooked and probably pre sliced and reheated. It was tough as well. Presentation was good but the reality was very poor food, soggy roast potatoes and smothered in tasteless gravy. Other members of our party had similar experiences. What a shame, the staff were excellent and very attentive to our needs. I doubt that we will return to what could be a great venue if only the food could be improved.

Our Sunday roasts are extremely popular and normally receive great reviews with lots of repeat visits from our guests, we’re disappointed to read that you didn’t enjoy yours. As you say our team are very attentive and checked on you and your party several times during your visit, taking care of additional drinks as well as ensuring that you were satisfied with your meal. Therefore, we’re a little surprised you did not take the opportunity to mention any issues at the time and saddened that we had to read this in a review.

We had visitors on Thursday and had a relaxing evening meal. Our guest is still raving about his steak and ale pie and we all really enjoyed our home cooked meals. Huge portions, great beer and super service. Friday we visited again for valentines dinner and wow....food was superb, presentation was that of a Michelin chef and omg, the steak was sooooo tasty. As always, great beer and superb, friendly and efficient service. Love it!

Lovely welcoming pub with roaring log fires. We were delighted to be guided to our table alongside the fire on a cold and wet February afternoon. We ordered black pudding Scotch egg to start and roast pork for mains. The starter was perfect the egg softly cooked and its surround succulent perfectly complimented by the mustard sauce. The roast pork was juicy, disappointingly for me, there was no crackling. The vegetables were perfectly cooked the Yorkshire pudding magnificent. My husband enjoyed the draught mild. Lovely service from everyone.

We had visitors come over on Sunday and booked a table in the pub, you must try and book these days as it is so popular! The home made steak and kidney pudding was superb, just like my mum used to make and was huge. We all left full and content. Great service, friendly and popular pub and superb food. Thank you!

We picked the The Crown as it was a mid way point for 7 of us to meet up for my 40th birthday and have Sunday Lunch. The staff were warm, welcoming and attentive from the start and the food was delicious - the sticky toffee pudding was incredible, definitely up there with one of the best I've ever had. We are looking forward to returning for our next get together.

A great Thursday evening dinner, with very effective COVID safe measures in place which are enforced to the letter. The food off the specials board was tasty, cooked to order and looked and tasted superb. Great value and tasty, healthy portions. Clean plates all round!! No room for pudding, maybe next time for the home made rice pudding 😻

After a blustery and wet morning in the garden we decided a late lunch out was needed. We arrived to find this on the specials board.. And it was wonderful. A pint of Banks's mild and a hot chocolate made this the lunch of the year.

What a great country pub. Greeted at the entrance by Suzanne and taken to my table. I was immediately made to feel welcome. Friendly staff and prompt service. I went for Sunday lunch and had the roast pork with all the trimmings. I did not expect to have so many fresh vegetables, it was delicious. Good size portions and very tasty. I ate the lot and in fact it was so good I was back again the following Sunday. I did also go for an evening meal and again everything was spot on. I highly recommend this pub for those of you who enjoy good, homemade fresh food. Can't think of anything I would change. Thank you all for the great experience and excellent food.

We were a pretty eclectic group of eight adults (two currently invalid) two children, a baby and a dog. We were given a lovely room to ourselves and from the point of booking to the second we left, we could not have asked for more. The staff were friendly and polite throughout with good service and even though we were out of the way in a back room, they kept checking if we needed anything and the space between courses was perfect. We were not rushed in any way but were not left to stew either. The pre-ordered food was fantastic, the black pudding scotch egg is to die for! Every one of us enjoyed our meals, from the gluten free fish and chips to the pork chop, pies and mushroom arancini. We couldn't fault anything. Thank you so much for giving me my best ever birthday meal out and although we found you by accident after being let down for another pub, we will be back and would not hesitate to recommend you.

Excellent lunch today with family. As the weather was good we sat on a trestle table out the front, facing the church. We were looked after by two lovely ladies with table service. We had three courses which were all delicious, each chose different dishes. My scotch egg starter was freshly homemade with soft yolk. My whole place main with hassle back potatoes was very good, fresh and tasty. Maybe just too much “brown” butter on the plate for my taste. Side of veggies were freshly steamed. Affogato dessert with Amaretto for dessert had some biscuit crumb in the bottom adding and interesting texture. All wines available by the glass. Just be aware that the pub had no carpark and local parking is a bit tricky.
