We were very much looking forward to celebrating the new year with what promised to be a very special meal at this gastropub. What we got was largely very disappointing and over priced. Fist there was the canapé - yes in singular we had to ask for a second chance to try the canapés on arrival. Then the first course... More

My wife and I have just had two really lovely days at the Durham Ox. Warmest of welcomes..tremendous hostess at breakfast and a beautiful meal this evening to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had the Junior Cottage Green suite which was big enough for us, with king size bed, cosy sitting corner with tv and hospitality tray and a well-appointed... More

Stopped here for like lunch on a whim. Rather expensive prices but as it was Christmas we thought we'd treat ourselves as a family. The children's fish and chips were expensive at £7 each, but portion size was more than adequate and quality was ok. The other orders we had were rather disappointing - the veggie option was a shallot... More

Dear Pcullwick How disappointing to read that you were not impressed on your first visit to The Durham Ox. We endeavour to provide faultless service with good food and we are frustrated and saddened to hear how much you disliked your meals and for this we can only apologise, as you can see from our other reviews this is not... We detoured here on Christmas Eve on our way to Malton for Christmas. It was 35 years since we'd been in crake, but we had always remembered it well. We only had starters and a glass of wine. The food was good, the staff friendly and it had a pleasant ambiance.

Having been to the Durham Ox for excellent lunches previously, we decided, as a pre-Christmas treat, to try out their "Eat your hotel bill" offer. The rooms were booked when we phoned, so for £30 we upgraded to the Rose cottage. On arrival, we were shown the cottage, which was beautiful, so charismatic, with ceiling beams and covering 2 floors.... More

The bar area of the Durham Ox is one of my favourite places to eat - it has a real warmth about it, accentuated by the dark wood furniture and smell of the log burning stove in the winter months. The menu provided a good deal of choice for both starters and mains, with a good few specials adding to... More

We had an overnight stay here with dinner, bed and breakfast. The deal was £150. It was excellent. The food was of excellent quality with a good menu choice and service. Our room, upstairs in the outside cottages was spacious with a large very comfortable bed. The bathroom was outstanding with a large deep bath and a separate double shower.... More

We ate three breakfasts and three dinners. In both cases two were very good and one was disappointing, certainly given the prices which are pretty high. The range went from a halibut special which was magnificent to a gourmet burger which wasn't (magnificent or gourmet). Also beware which dining room you get: some are cosy and intimate but they also... More

We had a weekend lunch with the children. The food was excellent but the service was a little on the slow side. The furniture is traditional but can be a little uncomfortable.
