Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A one night stop on a bikepacking trip which would take me over The South Downs Way. I booked a room for one night and arrived mid-afternoon on the Saturday of the Easter weekend. I was greeted by one of the bar team who was friendly and helpful. I was able to store my bike securely while I stayed overnight. After a shower I was down to the bar for a well earned drink. It was a friendly and sociable atmosphere and I got chatting with some of the locals. I booked a table for 6.30 and ordered the scampi and chips. A really tasty meal with a decent sized portion. A good nights sleep and I was up at the crack of dawn in preparation for another long day in the saddle. I was greeted by the landlord / landlady team who had prepared a superb breakfast of fresh fruit, granola / cereal and a cooked breakfast of my choice ( I chose scrambled eggs on toast). In summary, a really great place to stop off if you are walking or cycling this part of the world. Really friendly team and some great food which was really reasonable. Thanks everybody for looking after me !

Great pub, lovely Sunday roast! Great service - recommend you book as it gets busy and you want to get there early to get a car parking space as it’s not big and gets full quickly. Lovely roast - choices of nut roast, beef, chicken and others :)

We called in for a quick drink on a very hot Sunday. The young staff were very friendly and helpful. The pub garden had a large shaded area so we decided to order food. The service was very quick and our meals arrived piping hot in 15 minutes. The vegetarian nut roast was superb accompanied by perfectly cooked vegetables and delicious cauliflower cheese.

Bar staff were sweet but clearly short staffed and couldn’t manage serving at bar and tables. 45 minutes wait for food that wasn’t that tasty to be honest. Potatoes clearly frozen, cauliflower cheese overcooked and cabbage also looked frozen. Meat wise you only got 2 slices - for just short of £18 a roast I’d expect a lot better

We came to celebrate a friend’s birthday for Sunday lunch. There was a party of 8 of us. The food was served in a timely fashion and it was delicious. Lovely and hot. Fab roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and great vegetables cooked to perfection. Good portion sizes.

To be fair we only chose The Rising Sun because the B&B we had booked became unavailable. Although I knew of it, having lived in the area for a few years we were pleasantly surprised. Although from the outside it is nothing special to look at and is on an awkward junction, inside the bar area is very welcoming as were Gareth and his team. The double room (1 of 4) was comfortable and had adequate hanging space for clothes, although more hooks are needed in the en-suite shower room. Being a lively pub the room was not quiet until last orders but we had a good night’s sleep both nights The full English breakfast was well cooked and well presented, but the choice of cereals could have been better. There was nothing for those who need a high fibre diet and the toast was from ordinary sliced bread. We ate in the bar both nights and had good meals from the modest menu which included a reasonable selection of non meat dishes. In summary a very pleasant stay

Did the Devil’s Dyke walk and wanted to stop at a pub for lunch. The pub along the walk was too busy for more customers so we walked into Beeding and found The Rising Sun. I was a little worried about the exterior look of the place but how looks can be deceiving! On entering see were met by a very friendly bartender and the waitresses were all very friendly too. The dishes we had were truly tasty. We had the roasted veg and pasta, bacon and chicken salad with new potatoes and Cajun chicken salad. All 3 dishes were very tasty, full of flavour and way beyond what we expected. Worth every penny! Will definitely be back next time we’re around those parts.

We booked the Rising Sun for a weekend of walking on the South Downs Way. Having booked the B&B they kept a table for us on a busy Friday night in case we wanted to eat there. We decided we would. Great atmosphere, great staff, really nice beer and really good pub food. Good value and so tasty. The breakfast the next day was really good and set us up for the lovely walks in the area. The landlord, Gareth, was so friendly and so helpful. The next day he dropped us off so we could walk more to Upper Beeding and do more of the South Downs Way. I really haven't stayed in a better B&B - good beer, good food, great staff and an amazing landlord. I'm looking forward to going back already.

This is a great local pub which isn't trying to be pretentious by calling it self a Bistro pub and charging inflated prices. The pub has friendly staff and since last September has had a new Landlord Gareth. He is gradually making improvements and will be soon introducing a new menu. The existing menu offers all the normal favourites such as fish n chips and Burgers and much else. My friends had the sticky toffee pudding for desert and said it was the best one they had ever tasted. One thing is certain that when you visit this pub you will be made to feel welcome.

Came today with one year old and my family for a roast as heard good things! It didn’t disappoint! Really friendly and welcoming waiting staff and good bubbly atmosphere in there. Had high chair and very accommodating to my baby asking if I wanted a little plate of roast for her too. We had the roast beef and my other half had the lamb, it was superb! Good selection of veg, horseradish sauce and mint sauce which are good touches for a roast and not always given. Meat was delicious and extra jug of gravy too! Service was quick despite being busy, so all in all will be coming back again. Only improvement: baby changing facilities would be great or if expensive, just a cheap plastic padded changing mat.

Visited last night. On arrival was asked if I wanted a tab which I did, I offered a card, not required. That is unusual but signified what a friendly pub this is. One very able barman, I imagine one cook, and a waitress made the place run last night, and there weren't many tables free inside. A wide mix of people, road workers, middle class holiday makers, locals, all welcome and all well behaved. Specials board catered for vegan, vegetarian and carnivores. London Pride.

A welcome place to stay along the South Downs Way - the pub has an excellent vibe, friendly and very helpful landlord, Garrett, - who ensured that I was personally welcomed, and helped me with a small wash of clothes. Garrett met me for my early breakfast and ensured I was headed to return to the trail by the most convenient way. Most highly recommended

Sunday Lunch with all the trimmings and tons of gravy. If that is not enough crumbles and treacle sponges for puddings. And custard. For the fainter hearted there are other options! Friendly efficient service. Ou regular choice.

We just wanted a light lunch and the soup of the day suited us admirably. One hungry young friend had a ploughmans which was also very good. The beers here are always well kept, and the Harveys bitterb was very tasty.
