Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Bit out of the way but worth the effort to get there. Everything a country pub should be. Cosy, welcoming full of atmosphere and friendly with top rate service and dog friendly. Food was reasonable value and very enjoyable. To be honest although marginally more expensive than most food pubs the quality of our meals were worth it and better than most pubs. Went in January and it was busy and very cosy. If there was any criticism it was that it was very dark in the room we had our meal. Had to use the phone torch to read the menus. Being an old building I'm not sure there were any electric lights in the room but a little more illumination might add to the atmosphere. It in no way spoilt our evening, I have to say, which was as close to perfect as you could hope for.

We were sceptical upon visiting as it just looks like any country pub, but they sat us down next to an open fire, in a cosy little room and served me one of the best meals of my life...it was valentine's day but forget the girlfriend, it was all about "Henry". The slow-cooked shoulder of lamb was part of their 'classic' menu and it was one of my top 3 meals of all time. Firstly there was A LOT of meat on that dish, very much value for money! Secondly, the lamb was cooked perfectly, melt in your mouth and fell right off the bone. Finally, the veg, was simple but cooked well and matched the lamb perfectly. A lovely minty flavour to the whole dish. 10/10 would recommend. If only i lived closer to visit more!

Eleven us were stopping about two miles away for a lads' weekend and the Blacksmiths provided an excellent retreat for beer and food. They catered for all of us-having preordered-and we were roundly impressed byvtge food. Meals included cod loin, lamb Henry, pork belly and sirloin steak. Desserts were good too and the wine drunk was better than it often is in pubs. A special word for the staff who worked tirelessly to accommodate us and keep us fed and watered throughout with a friendly efficiency and politeness. A really good pub. Thank you.

Having been exposed to very good but also quite monotonous "gastro-pub" style offerings in some parts we were looking for a non standard pub menu dining in a traditional environment and the Blacksmith's Arms exceeded all our hopes. The pub internal rooms are very old and excellently conserved with original open fires and the friendly no fuss staff were a delight. The menu and food was great and we will be back!

Historic authentic country pub serving beautiful food. We’ve been here several times over the last ten years and it reassuringly maintains the standard of quality and hospitality. Booking by email was very efficient and our visit during Covid was covered by all hygiene and distancing requirements without compromising the warm welcome and great service. Food is great here: from the evening menu our highlights were the tempura prawns starter and lamb Henry mains. You really cannot pass up the chance to have lamb Henry if you eat meat - the best slow-cooked lamb ever!!

Excellent service, all new restrictions were handled professionally but felt completely comfortable. The menu is small but extremely well done and is great value for money given the quality. Every dish tasted as good as it looked. Definitely worth a detour from any of the mains walks or towns.

This is not a pub you will find by accident, you will have to go looking for it with map (and/or sat nav) but it’s worth the hunt down twisty narrow country lanes. The pub is fairly dark, and warmed by open fires, really welcoming and friendly. I had the local pilsner, fresh and tasty, I could have drank it all day, it’s lovely. Both hubby and I had the tempura battered prawns for starters. Fresh, tasty, meaty, lightly battered, lovely. I had the fish and chips for main and that was beautiful. Really fresh light fish, tasty and not at all greasy, perfect old style chips and garden peas, with home made tartar sauce. Hubby had the chicken breast with new potatoes and peas. He said the wild mushroom sauce was exceptional and he loved the whole meal. Neither of us could manage a pudding, but that didn’t spoil a thing. The food is amazing. Simply amazing.

Our first time, recommended by a friend. Starters of soup and spicy potatoes very nice. However the mains were delicious. Guinea Fowl cooked two ways was delicious and cooked very well. I had minted Lamb Henry which was perfect. Unfortunately so much meat we couldn't eat a dessert. would definitely go again.

Arrived at 12.30 and left 2 hours later after a warm welcome and a delicious and leisurely lunch! The precautions being taken due to COVID are sensible with booked tables only, staff in masks and good spacing between the tables but it isn’t obtrusive. The menu was reduced as explained on the website but that wasn’t a problem and the food was beautiful. As a birthday treat both adults had three courses, all of which were fresh and really tasty. Our daughter was equally well looked after from the children’s menu. A really charming pub and well worth the short but slow drive from Coniston.

We visited The Blacksmiths Arms for my birthday having read some good reviews. We were seated next to a lovely roaring fire and handed a small but perfectly formed menu and a short wine list. The wine was of good quality and the food was exceptional. Lovely fresh produce, perfectly cooked. Everything we had was faultless but we particularly loved the tempura prawns (the accompanying salad was delicious too) and the lamb. We loved it so much we came back for lunch the next day. This was another faultless meal - the confit duck salad was out of this world. Service was also friendly, our dogs were welcomed, and although it was raining when we visited, it is a stunning setting.

Visited here on a Saturday afternoon at the start of March for a quick lunch after a walk in the area. Lots of different side rooms in the pub and had a very nice 'Cumberland sausage and red onion marmalade baguette'. Would recommend.

Headed here for a Sunday roast based on reviews we’d read when planning our trip. While the beef and gravy were absolutely delicious the roast parsnip & carrots were different sizes so, some were perfectly cooked while others were just a little too hard. Duck fat roasted potatoes weren’t great - I expected super crispy hot roasties with a fluffy inside, we had lukewarm and quite hard to cut mediocre ones. Loved extra gravy served in a wee jug. We ordered cheese for pudding and they were delicious, crackers as well, but we really felt it would have been nice if they had told us what each one was before disappearing. The pub’s dog friendly, very relaxed and I loved the lit candles on each table but our roasts weren’t what we’d hoped for.

We visited the Blacksmith Arms in mid-December, we made a late reservation and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. We were late and got lost a number of times, Alex (the bartender/waiter/all round great guy) noticed we went down the wrong road nearby and came to rescue us in the rain. He literally pushed our car out of a wet field. The pub itself was the perfect picture of a country pub. We had the duck and the Lamb Henry by the fire and spoke at length to Alex and soaked up the atmosphere. The food itself was unbelievable. Couldn't fault it if I wanted to. I'm still having flashbacks to my Lamb Henry. Overall, you should go here. You will not be disappointed.

Many years since we’d ventured into this part of the Lake District, but so glad we made the detour en route to our cottage. We both went for the Haddock c/w chips and mushy peas, adding a mussels starter with our mains. It was honestly the best I’ve ever had. Both had sorbets to finish, with a couple of drinks each, and a cheeky port to wash it all down. Came to almost exactly £50. Highly recommended, and I’d suggest booking if you’re after an evening meal, as I overheard someone mention limited availability.

Blacksmiths Arms is a very special place. Came here a couple of weeks ago on a holiday with my family and the food (and wine) was delicious! Very attentive waitresses who were patient with our dithering and responded to allergy queries. I left my shirt/ jacket and we live in Southampton so massive thank you to Michael who posted it back to me. Such a kind gesture which not many pub landlords would bother with. Thank you again :) From Anna x
