Had Sunday Roast lunch under the guidance of the New Management. Certain matters related to this experience need attention. Service good but the roast was very average indeed. Very poor roast potatoes, very claggy thick gloopy gravy which I suspect was not fresh but bulk...instant gravy. Vegetables very average! Get this sorted then you will get more return business but for now I will be giving it a miss !More

We have dined at The Bull on several occasions but this time was really exceptional the Fish & Chips was better then most Fish & Chip shops and the Korean Chicken burger was just as delicious, the new manager and his staff were very helpful...and couldn’t do enough for us, we will definitely be going back. Thank you.More

Outrageous that you took my booking for lunch on Christmas Day and now cancel it as you have suddenly decided to close on that day. Well thanks a bunch for ruining our Christmas. My chances of finding somewhere else to take my 94 year old...father are very slim at this late stage.More

Extremely disappointing. I had one snack lunch there (on arrival) which was good (BLT ciabatta) - as were the pastries I had for continental breakfast. I sat outside amongst cigarette butts, and weeds along the front terrace wall for the lunch I had, but was...instructed to sit inside for each breakfast, which was ‘served’ in the very stale-smelling pub. On the last morning, there were beer mats draped along the length of the radiator in front of which I was seated. The table and cutlery were dirty. A couple of staff members were friendly, although, the lady who I believe to be the manager seemed to be put out in every instance of having to give any sort of service. eg - heating the milk for coffee (she'd have to check if there was an available clean pot in order to do so. No sugar offered with coffee. No marmalade with toast, dirty, sticky tables to sit at. The accommodation was APPALLING. I paid £100 for each of the 5 nights I was there and no-one made my bed for the entire duration of my stay. I twice asked for clean towels and once for clean mugs and got them. I had one snack lunch there which was good (BLT ciabatta) as were the pastries for the continental breakfast. A couple of staff members were very friendly, although, the lady who I believe to be the manager seemed to be put out in every instance of having to give service. eg - heating the milk for coffee (she'd have to check if there was an available clean pot in order to do so. No sugar offered. The photographs were taken this morning (18 September 2023) whilst I waited for the pub to be opened by the aforementioned manager, for a breakfast I had ordered for 09.30. She arrived at 09.34 saying that I had made my breakfast order after 7pm – this is true and therefore I wasn’t really entitled to have it, but as a special favour she would make me a coffee and I could have pastries. She said she knew about my breakfast order, but had a school run to do and so couldn’t get to work earlier. Another couple was also waiting to check out. I was ready to leave and have breakfast by 9am, but had to sit in my very dirty, stuffy room (the windows didn’t open) hoping that someone would arrive before I had to leave at 09.45. In the meantime, 2 delivery vans arrived and left produce at the pub, but said no-one was inside the pub/kitchen. The photographs are a snapshot of what to expect in this rundown, very poorly-managed pub. It’s such a shame, because it has great potential in the right hands, but needs work done to restore it and properly trained staff to work there. I stayed there only because of the proximity to an event I was attending and I doubt very much I shall ever go back. Neither, of course can I recommend it to anyone else.More

Service was good. Some food was Ok, some was not. A burnt burger was returned and replaced with a frozen tasteless one. Skinny fries were not skinny they were just normal sized chips. Despite it being 1pm on a Friday lunchtime, the place was empty....Won't be going back.More

We had high expectations of lunch here looking at the menu on the website. Sadly the menu we were given was nothing like the website one. All in all the food was very poor, incinerated fish with chips, the batter was very thick and fatty...and inedible. Inside the casing of batter was a small portion of fish. We also had the Wayu burger which was also overcooked with pre salted chips that were very crispy. We won't return for lunch here. Having said that the Sussex Bitter was very nice on a hand pump. With hindsight we should have expressed our feelings at the timeMore

We booked and paid for 8 nights at this old pub before we arrived and simply could not wait to leave, getting more depressed as we returned daily after exploring Sussex. The one positive was that the staff were all pleasant. It was all downhill...from there. The hotel appears to have no management and the staff minimal supervision or direction. The staff were generally all very young and whilst pleasant they had little or no interest in the local area and what was happening. We ate in the restaurant on first night only, not a great culinary experience. The thing we found unforgivable and disgusting was the total lack of any cleaning or housekeeping service no matter how long you were staying. The bedroom was not cleaned the whole time we were there. We did request that the bin was emptied and the tea cups and glasses changed on one occasion. The "cleaner", did come into the room as requested, left an additional loo roll and folded the towels. This was the sum total of the "clean" we had requested. On speaking to the staff in the bar one of the bar staff kindly went to the room and completed the task. She should not have needed to do this and the "cleaner" should have been made to return and do the job properly. Yet another example of lack of management and supervision. We had to buy bleach and disinfectant wipes to clean our own room and wash the cups and glasses in the bathroom. Absolutely disgraceful. The toilet seat was cheap flimsy plastic and far too small so did not fit and moved whenever used. I dropped my reading glasses and on searching had to move the bed! Underneath and behind was years of dust and dirt and old tissues and rubbish under the bed. It made one want to vomit (photo attached). The shower capture was full of mould and old hairs. In short the room was filthy and clearly this is something not of importance to the hotel because they have NO housekeeping service at all. The bedrooms are in a converted stables at the back of the building. The sight greeting guests as they leave the room is of an overgrown and rubbish strewn area by the bins (photo attached). No effort made at all to tidy up or look presentable. Inside the bar area is ok but the whole building is tired and in need of some better design input. It is a lovely old building, full of beams, history and character, none of which are given any respect by the owners. The breakfast area is simply put, grotty, with sticky non descript tables, dreadful carpet and a mismatch of inappropriate random pictures. We did not have a cooked breakfast so cannot comment but the "Continental" offering was cereal, sourdough toast and croissant. We were also treated to a glass of juice on 1 day only. No fruit, yoghurt or cheeses were ever offered. The windows here are rusted shut and the "courtyard" garden is a collection of battered benches and tables surrounded by dead plants and overgrown weeds. Overall this was the worst hotel we have ever visited and needs some serious proper management by someone who cares, attention to detail, interior design and CLEANING.More

This is old pub in an attractive village location, so you expect the traditional classic country feel. But the bar resembles something you might see in a cafe. Tables laid throughout the pub as if a hotel dining room, about 30 Formica topped tables and...chairs, empty and all laid out for service . I counted 8 customers, on Friday evening served by 5 teenage ( excellent ) staff. I had gone to the pub for a small function where nibbles/ food was provided. There was a table laid out with 4 types of crisps, gluten free ! And lumps of white bread with oil dips. Unappetising.More

Really couldn't fault experience. The best bacon pudding and the most tender burgers. Honestly the best food out I've had in a long time. Friendly staff, only issue was sitting under fire escape which had a loud faulty buzz but they did offer to move...us and said some was coming out to fix the sign. Definitely recommend for a pub dinner for couples and families.More

From the website this looked like a great pub with lots of vegetarian options on the menu. We didn't book, but were easily seated. Front of house staff were friendly and helpful. The food was a let down- skinny fries were regular size chips, and...the vegan fish & chips was shockingly poor value- half of the smallest aubergine imaginable (not even cooked through), plus an order of the not-so-skinny fries. Mushy peas in a tiny cup. Most of the plate was empty. The chef should have been embarrassed sending this out of the kitchen. My husband's wagyu burger wasn't great either. Don't think we'll be back anytime soon! Luckily there's lots of lovely pubs in the area.More

We came for dinner, which was tasty. But the woman who served us was so rude and sour, rushing us and clearly ready to get rid of us inconvenient paying customers. Completely unacceptable when we are handing over £210 to them for the experience. Grow...up lady and thank your customers with a smile, rather than a terse attitude of old.More

Yesterday February 8th with some friends we hadn’t seen in awhile at The Bull pub Newick East Sussex and really looking forward to a nice meal having been to this pub in previous years . The young ladies that took our orders were more than...helpful and in due course the meals arrived , our friends had both ordered mince beef and onion pies which looked very nice in individual pie dishes but to say they were disappointing would be an understatement, the pastry was so hard it was impossible to cut into let a lone eat and the meat was so dry that parts of it were black in colour , when we complained the waitress apologised and said sh would tell the chef but that’s as far as it went . My own meal was sausages and bubble and squeak it all looked very nice but was barely warm when I wentto eat it and had to ask for it to be heated up before I was able to start eating it , the sausages were under cooked so I could not eat them and ended bring them home in a box after signing a note that we were going to take them away from the pub at our own risk . While there I had to use the disabled toilet which had no lock on the inside of the door and ended having to ask my husband to stand outside to make sure that no one could walk in on me , I think an out of order sign should have been the better option in this case . The only saving grace were the deserts apple and pear crumble and bread and butter which when they were served look and tasted delicious and were both nice and hot . Sorry to say there was no reduction in the bill when it came for some really disappointing food . So I think it will be sometime before we all go there again .More
