As others have noted, the owner is so friendly! She has been on the island since 1970 and has run the Courtenay restaurant for 26 years. We were somewhat taken aback by the dated nature of the restaurant but would return for the conversation. The food is typical of Western Chinese but it curbed my Asian cravings...I can only eat... Tried this place one night near closing. The lady was very nice and even made us a favorite dish from their dim sum menu (despite dim sum being a lunch thing). We ordered -BBQ pork fried rice -Sesame red bean balls -Chicken Corn soup The fried rice and balls were awesome! The soup was alright, but I'm jaded to that... More

Don't let the atmosphere fool you. This building is almost 100 years old and the family has run the restaurant for over 25 years. The interior is tired and worn, our first instinct was to turn around. However being on a quest for good Chinese food we took a chance and were pleasantly surprised, staff was friendly and the food... More

Visited again several times. The food was superb. Just to mention a few dishes - Special chow mein, Chicken Hot pot, Sweet and sour fish. Just to tell the person who mentioned flies below - windows are full of plants, never any flies. The restaurant is in vintage decor, and so lovely.

Having read previous comments, we went with opened mind. For those who like an intimate atmosphere, lovely interior, and excellent Chinese food, this is the place for you. Order from the menu, no buffet here, which means, you will get freshly made food, cooked with love, just for you.. You will not be disappointed.. I used to work in hospitality... More

We don't know how they stay in business. Food is boring. Place not clean. Dead flies in the windows are off-putting.

We were running late and looking for a place to eat. We saw the Mandarin Village and decided to try it. It was about 8:30 PM, and they were to close at 9:00 PM that night. There was no one else in the restaurant, and this did not surprize us being close to close and I think it was a... More

Having seen this place on the corner for years we bravely ventured in. Our immediate impression was a "dirty" smell. At 5:30 p.m. there were no other diners in the restaurant except for another party that arrived when we did. The place is not well decorated and the staff/owners sure don't dress like they're running a business. The menu is... More

My family went here late last year. The first clue should have been the place was empty at 5:30 pm. The owners were very friendly and obliging but the food was terrible,.The chop suey was 70 percent celery[and not fresh]some old pieces of broccoli and some cauliflower. Unattractive looking and terrible to eat. The sweet and sour pork was also... More
