About
Travellers' Choice
2024
The Chestfield Barn originated as part of the Chestfield Manor in the 14th Century, a possession of the half-brother of William the Conqueror, Odo, Bishop of Bayeaux. It is believed that the Manor dates back to as early as 1084, particularly as it is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. In the early part of the 20th Century the barn was converted in to a golf house by Abe Mitchell to service the 700 acre golf course constructed in 1924 by George Reeves. The 14th Century barn is now a pub restaurant offering a traditional and contemporary menu of freshly prepared dishes using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

We live very near the pub but don't go often, nor do any of our friends who are local residents. During the day the clientele are mainly noisy lager-swigging types with badly behaved children. Our experience in the evening has been very variable, there seems to be a high turnover of chefs with an occasional good one who never stays long, the food has varied from excellent to dreadful. We have heard the present chef is good so we went for dinner to celebrate our friends wedding anniversary. Our table was under one of the loudspeakers and the music was rather loud. There was broken glass on the floor, apparently a previous guest at the next table had been brought the wrong drink and had thrown the glass at the wall. The staff had apparently removed him but clearly hadn't had time to clear up the glass.
Starters were excellent, very well presented and reasonable portion size. The main courses were ok, tasty and filling but the vegetables for one meal didn't arrive until about ten minutes after the rest of the food. We were told the chef didn't like the way they looked when they came out of the microwave and had started again. They were still of very poor quality and didn't arrive until the rest of the food had been eaten. Our complaint was not handled well, just an apology without an offer to take that meal off the bill or provide any alternative compensation. Sadly we've experienced very late arrival of some of the order here before; getting everything to the table at the same time is one of the most basic requirements of catering and it's disappointing they still can't do this.
The cheese board was excellent, plenty of cheese of good quality and variety and some grapes although there were very few biscuits. We did receive very small glasses of complementary port with the cheese. If this was intended to compensate for the late arrival of poor quality vegetables it was a nice gesture, but it wasn't explained.
I'm a big fan of Shepherd Neame, but sadly this pub never has any of the seasonal ales, just Whitstable Bay and Masterbrew. Both were well kept. Looking around, most of the customers were drinking lager so perhaps there's not enough demand for real ale here. This is a vicious circle, if they stocked a variety of ale, more real ale drinkers would come. They also don't take part in the free meal in your Birthday scheme, of which I'm a member. I asked for an island malt at the end of the meal and was told they only had Jameson or Bushmills, on reflection they probably thought I had asked for an Ireland malt, an understandable mistake given how loud the music was.
We will continue to avoid the pub during the day, but apart from the dreadful vegetables the food was good and we will try an evening meal there again.

Thank you for leaving us a detailed review. I do apologise for the delayed response in getting back to you, but I have been investigating this review. As you can appreciate, we take our reviews seriously and look into any low scoring reviews.
Could I ask how often you visit? As you stated you do not visit often and neither do your friends. I am curious to know how you know what our clientele is in the day, if you do not visit often? I can assure you that we do not have “noisy lager-swigging types with bad behaved children” I would also like to say you left a review on 29th December, assuming this was around the time when you visited – it would have been Christmas and Half Term – so we would have had a lot more children in the day than normal but certainly not badly behaved children and definitely not “noisy lager-swigging” customers.
I am also curious where you heard we have a high turnover of chefs. Our previous head chef was with us for 5 years, before moving onto her own business and our current Head Chef has been with us since April 2023.
I would also like to point out and address the broken glass story you have left in your review. We certainly did not “have a previous guest at the next table who had been brought the wrong drink and had thrown the glass at the wall” and you know this as our members of staff explained to you. When you had been seated at your table – one member of staff was cleaning before you arrived and when she came back to finish the job you asked her to leave it as it was not a bother to you, this member of staff also explained to you that it was an accident, the customer drink slipped from the table causing it to break.
I would like to apologise you was near a speaker which was rather loud. If you had spoken to a member of staff about this, we would have been happy to sort this issue for you.
We would also like to assure everyone reading this and yourself that our vegetables would not have come out the microwave nor would we have said “The chef didn’t like the way they looked when they came out of the microwave.” Our Assistant Manager also apologised and dealt with you compliant and DID take a meal off you bill, to offer some compensation. As you also stated we did give you all a complementary glass of port. We would like to point out that port is actually meant to be served in a smaller glass.
I would also like to let you know that not all Shepherd Neame pubs take part in the Birthday Scheme, this is stated in the T&C's when signing up to the birthday scheme.
Please do not fabricate what happened in a review. This is not fair to the staff working, the business owners or to people wishing to dine with us and reading this review.

Went for a Sunday lunch when booking was told would be upstairs but was given a seat downstairs, not a major drama as could see it was very busy.
No warm welcome told have to wait for food as arrived 5 to 10 minutes early, no drinks menu but asked what we wanted immediately. Might have chosen a wine but no real opportunity to do so when put on the spot.
We were polite throughout and as much as the food was good, the staff could use some training in customer service and so could the general manager. There was no warm welcoming atmosphere and when the wrong sundae came out the general manager responds "so you don't like buttons?" No I ordered a honeycomb sundae, "fine will get you some" which came out in a bowl on the side rather than offering to replace the sundae.
We were going to complain but didn't in the end as if that's the managers attitude it would have been a waste of time.
As nice as the food was, I won't be returning due to the unfriendly, disinterested staff.

Dear Mr Matthews, I apologise that you felt we weren't welcoming on Sunday, but I do remember greeting you and showing you your table which wasn't upstairs as a table had become available down and we only ask this in case we are full and need to use upstairs, especially at the weekends. Plus we are currently working on a new wine list but we do have one available if requested and I only advised on the slight food wait as we have to stagger our bookings due to the size of the kitchen and how many covers we can serve at any one time, I also remember bringing your desserts out when you said it should have been honeycomb and unfortunately my attempt at making a joke out of not liking buttons didn't work (as I know most people enjoy them:) so I apologise for that and remember saying to save time in getting another Sundae made, I offered to get the honeycomb to go with it, meaning that you could eat at the same time as your friend (who I noticed had a hot dessert) and also gave you extra chocolate toppings, but again I apologise as this was obviously wrong and am sorry it came across that way!
So I hope this explains the situation and thank you for your feedback which we always appreciate!
Best Regards, Louise, General Manager

I’ve scored a 3 because the staff I dealt with at the bar and serving the food were friendly and polite. We sat outside and I ordered 2 roast dinners at the bar whilst purchasing drinks. The lady dealing with bookings checked with me if I had booked which I had not. I was told it should be ok but they were going to be very busy later. I said we were not planning on staying long as we needed to be elsewhere later. At this time the bar was quiet.
Dinner arrived quite quickly. 1 lamb and 1 beef. The Yorkshire pudding were both stone cold as was the meat and tasteless with a splash of gravy on the plate. Very disappointed this being our local pub it felt as if numbers are important then quality. The garden is now packed with tables - we were table no 52 - with some even on the little bridge!
I did return to the bar after our meal to register my complaint which was taken by a waitress passed on to the bar manager and then the reservation lady spoke with me asking about the problem. I was told I should have bought it to there attention and they would replace the meals, but as mentioned, we could only be there for a short time.
I note from other reviewers that the tasteless roast appears to be a recurring issue. Possibly this needs to be rectified. £ 40 for a cold roast is unacceptable and being only a few steps from home sadly it won’t be a repeated visit.

Thank you for leaving us a review, we really do appreciate it as we love to see what we are doing well and what we need to work on.
We will be passing your feedback onto the Kitchen Team and discussing with them your review, as we do not want to be delivering food to our customers cold. We are correct we do need to rectify this and I can assure you we will be.
With regards your comments regarding "numbers are more important that quality" we can assure you this is not the case, I understand why you would feel this way, with more tables but this is only because we are extremely busy and do not want to disappointed people with turning them away BUT in the same breathe we do not want our food to be letting us down. I want to assure you we have taken this review seriously and will be dealing with this further.
We hope you can come back to us again, so you can give us a second chance to change your opinion based on recent experience.

This could be a lovely venue if it was managed properly and had kitchen staff who were passionate.
A complete disappointment from start to finish. I couldn’t understand why the service was so slow given it wasn’t particularly busy. When you have to constantly chase your drinks order it immediately puts a downer on the experience. The starter was passable but not as I’d have wanted (I can definitely make it better). The roast meals we had were terrible: potatoes that were obviously heated up more than once and were void of any flavour, that was once you’d battled to get your knife through them. Cauliflower cheese (charged as an extra) was hardly cooked, which was returned and the second one was no better; it was inedible. Other veg was cheap broccoli, carrots and cabbage. Serve some fresh local vegetables of the season with more quality. Horrible, cheap, ready-made Yorkshire puddings. Terrible, terrible food. It was sent back, we got a partial refund and we left hungry.

We were dog sitting nearby and the Chestfield Barn was within walking distance so we thought we would give it a try.
As it was the hottest week of the year we sat outside by the large pool of koi carp which entertained us and filled the silent gaps.
The inside was a quite spectacular light show so goodness knows what it looks like at Christmas.
The member of staff that served us was really friendly and offered my wife a taster of her cider before choosing and she also came to check on us as she noticed we had been waiting for quite a while. Which on this occasion wasn’t a problem, but showed she was on the ball.
I had a sizeable portion of pie with lovely fresh vegetables and my wife had a crispy chicken dish.
Both were very tasty, piping hot and priced very reasonably for this day and age.
All in all a very positive experience in a nice, picturesque, country pub.

Booked Sunday lunch for 4 at 3pm. Ordered 2 x lamb and 2 x beef roasts. After 15 mins we were told there was no lamb but offered gammon as replacement - No thanks!
Settled for steak & ale pie, waited another 10 mins to be told no pie left. Reluctantly settled for beef all round. 20 minutes later the meals arrived. Not a vegtable in sight, As there was no-one to ask we assumed maybe we had to order the veg seperately & started to eat. After another 5 minutes, the veg arrived in a bowl. The beef tasted ok, but the potatoes were hard on the outside and barely warm inside & the veg was definitely undercooked. We had 2x pints of beer and 1x glass of wine. I paid probably 2.5 times what it would have cost in a local carvery which in hindsight would have been a much better option.
Needless to say we will not be eating there again.

Pre-booked a table. but when we arrived they put us on the table right infront of the door into the garden, even though there were many unreserved tables available. Waited 10mins for drinks orders to be taken and another 10mins for food order to be taken. Our starter of bread and olives arrived 15mins later and was underwhelming to say the least. A bowl of very small pitted olives (the very cheap ones), 4 thin slices of bake at home french baguette and olive oil and balsamic dip. For £5 it wasn't very good, when you go out and order bread and olives you usually get fresh baked bread with the large un-pitted more expensive olives. It was nightmare being put by the door as a constant stream of people, children, dogs and staff were passing and opening the door and leaving it open on what was a very windy day. Our napkins went flying and it became very stressful trying to hold a conversation. We waited 15mins for our plate to be collected even though several waitresses passed us that weren't doing anything. We waited a further 30mins for our mains were the disappointment continued. We couldn't understand why it was taking so long there were only two tables of four people eating, so not busy at all. My partners chilli con carne was rice with one spoonful of chilli on top with 4 tortilla chips wedged in the top for £14! It looked like a school meal and definitely not a generous portion. I had the vegan dirty fries but the chips were very dry which made the meal hard going, the rest of it was OK. Because our meal had taken so long we were late getting to the Wildwood evening open. It is a lovely looking pub but we won't be back.

Wow, what a wonderful experience we had!! THE most beautiful setting, beautifully lit old barn, greeted by wonderful, professional, friendly staff (with a glass of prosecco, felt like a wedding reception). Staff were so attentive throughout the afternoon (but not in your face attentive!), offered to take a photo of us by the Xmas tree even.
The music was perfect level - not too loud, not too emotive (for the sentimental among us!), just pitched perfectly. Wonderful atmosphere, could hear each other speak, yet humming with activity and other families in the background.
Three of the courses were delicious but sadly let down by the main dinner itself. It felt, just, meh and uninteresting. The veg was minimal and boiled, tasteless. The gravy was thin and also tasteless. The meat had a processed appearance about it (even if it wasn't!) - roast pots and yorkshires were like Aunt Bessies, overall it was like a ready meal. It needed some roasted veg, home cooked roast pots and meaty turkey gravy with good old cauli cheese maybe? Something to make it special and match the rest of the day.
We would still return as the rest of the amazing day outshone everything else but I hope the owners will consider an upgrade to the dinner, even if it adds to the cost, it will be worth it.

Thank you again and we do hope to see you return soon.

We were very pleased with the kindly service we received when booking the upstairs for a buffet for a number of people after Mum's funeral. It's not easy to gauge the number of people attending but our estimates, with their advice, worked very well, and we all enjoyed a varied and tasty buffet spread, with teas, coffees, and jugs of juices and water. The room was arranged perfectly and our photos were carefully and beautifully displayed. There is also the facility of the bar downstairs, which is great. David, who took our initial booking, and then Louise, the evening before, and Sarah, on the day, all kindly made sure everything went smoothly and according to plan. It's a great location for a special function. We were very pleased. Thank you to all at the barn.

Went for works Christmas do. Everything was spot on, which is hard to achieve with busy services . Friendly staff, lovely niche in upstairs restaurant.
I had the venison that was cooked perfectly, the fondant potato was lovely and soft. The gravy/jus was tasty. I was very happy!
I wasn't sure about the poached pear I had ordered but again, this was absolutely delicious.
I'll definitely be back

The Barn is a really lovely place to visit for either a drink, food or both. Lovely setting, lots of history and great friendly staff. Sadly however I found my last visit disappointing for the following reasons. Firstly my plate had two chips which I didn't notice at first (food covering it). I discreetly pointed it out to the waitress after I had finished as I didn't want to make a fuss. I suggested it be binned as nobody likes to see chipped plates as it's not only unsightly but unhygienic. After she had taken it away she returned to advise me that the chef had indeed binned it but it really should not have been served in the first place but mistakes happen. Secondly, when I received the bill I noticed that the wine I had ordered priced at £22.50 had suddenly increased to £27.00. Again I had to raise this with the waitress who told me that prices had gone up since I ordered even though the wine menu priced it at £22.50. She queried it with the manager and it was rectified but I felt unhappy that I had to raise another problem. Anyway today a week later I notice on their website that the prices have not increased so really confused now. Not got a problem with prices going up (although increasing the price from ordering to receiving the bill is a bit much) but I think it only reasonable to have up to date price lists for customers to avoid embarrassing situations like querying the bill. So, my advice to anyone visiting the Barn is to always check the bill and ...........the plates!

Hiya,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review, we really do appreciate it. Thank you for also bringing these issues to our attention not only on site but on here as well.
We are extremely sorry that your most recent visit has been disappointing and I would like to apologise for the chips in the plate and the of course the issue with pricing.
You are right a plate should not be served with chips, we have asked for staff to be extra vigilant on things like that seem small like a chip in the plate is a big issue.
I'm also sorry that the price was over charged, this was an error on our behalf but we have since rectified this and will be making sure our website is correct as well.
I am pleased to her that our manager did sort this issue for you. I do hope you will come back to The Barn to see these changes for yourself :)

Outstanding in every way.
We have often visited Chestfield barn for lovely lunches and dinners so when it was our friends birthday we decided to eat at the barn with his mum, brother and friends. We asked if they could provide a cake and they couldn’t but said I could, bring my own. Our lovely waitress Lisa hid the cake, lit the candles and even carried it to the table singing Happy Birthday. Our dinner was lovely, we had a massive range of different dishes and all were excellent. My Vegetarian dirty fries were great. It was a truly joyous evening made special by the outstanding staff, particularly Lisa. I have rarely felt so welcome in a restaurant or enjoyed such great service all delivered with a lovely smile. Thank you Lisa, you are a star. Our friend flew over from Switzerland especially to celebrate his 60th birthday and he wasn’t disappointed.

Unfortunately the food took over an hour to come to us and we had pre ordered the food. Prawn cocktail served without a lemon which should be standard and the roast was extremely bland. Bland gravy, fatty lamb and unseasoned vegetable. So disappointed haven’t been before and was so looking forward to it! The pie was rock hard and had clearly been left under the heat for the other meals and dried out. The baguettes were hard and dry and Camembert starter like water! Will only return for drinks as we loved the setting.

This pub is over an hours drive for us but we always visit at least 3/4 times a year as its one of my favourites. My wife treated me to a Father's Day meal, with my young daughters and dog. We are always made to feel welcome when visiting. The grounds are lovely and the pub itself is beautiful and cozy. I thought the free beer for the Father on Fathers day was a nice touch and appreciated. Every table was full which created a nice atmosphere. There was a little wait between courses but that was no issue for us and it was to be expected on Fathers Day. Every member of staff that we spoke to was friendly and even commented on how polite our daughters were when ordering! I just wish this was our local. We'll be back very soon.

Not sure the waitress wanted to be there. We went on a Monday and it was extremely busy so could forgive the slow service but it was the lack of interest and not bothering to take our order when she was free. When we finished our main course the restaurant was quiet. She came and cleared half the table after a 20 min wait. She asked if we wanted anything else and we requested the dessert menu. She went to the bar and had a long chat with her colleagues. As she made no attempt to clear the rest of the table or clear the other plates we decided to cut our losses and leave. Disappointing and we won’t be returning
