About
The Chestfield Barn originated as part of the Chestfield Manor in the 14th Century, a possession of the half-brother of William the Conqueror, Odo, Bishop of Bayeaux. It is believed that the Manor dates back to as early as 1084, particularly as it is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. In the early part of the 20th Century the barn was converted in to a golf house by Abe Mitchell to service the 700 acre golf course constructed in 1924 by George Reeves. The 14th Century barn is now a pub restaurant offering a traditional and contemporary menu of freshly prepared dishes using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Really enjoyable evening. The food was great, I had scampi and chips - the chips were amazing! And everyone else’s food looked great too. Fab service. Our waiter (Jack?) was very friendly and polite and looked after us so well. I’d definitely like to return.

Belated Valentine's meal at our local pub on Monday. Service was friendly and very good. The food was great. Tasty and freshly prepared. Drinks were not too expensive. Pub interior is very pretty with twinkly lights

This place is just awful! Considering its location and the upmarket area that is Chestfield this place is just an embarrassment. Who in their right mind actually says the food here is good - im sorry but it does not say much about your standards....What a pity us locals deserve a nice place to eat locally and this isnt it. Bad cramped decor....awful fried food, sunday roast a mess its just such a shame this is the only place we have in walking distance. I cannot bring myself to go anymore its desperate for new management, decor and someone that actually knows about food to take it over and make it specialMore

Very disappointed in the Barn. Had booked a table for 8pm. It was a quiet evening but we felt we were rushed. They approached us at between 9 15--9 30pm, saying the bar was closing, but on website it states they are open until 11,...soon after they brought us the bill saying no rush to pay, then approached us soon after with the machine to pay!!!! People were coming in for drinks and were turned away.More

Wow, what a wonderful experience we had!! THE most beautiful setting, beautifully lit old barn, greeted by wonderful, professional, friendly staff (with a glass of prosecco, felt like a wedding reception). Staff were so attentive throughout the afternoon (but not in your face attentive!), offered...to take a photo of us by the Xmas tree even. The music was perfect level - not too loud, not too emotive (for the sentimental among us!), just pitched perfectly. Wonderful atmosphere, could hear each other speak, yet humming with activity and other families in the background. Three of the courses were delicious but sadly let down by the main dinner itself. It felt, just, meh and uninteresting. The veg was minimal and boiled, tasteless. The gravy was thin and also tasteless. The meat had a processed appearance about it (even if it wasn't!) - roast pots and yorkshires were like Aunt Bessies, overall it was like a ready meal. It needed some roasted veg, home cooked roast pots and meaty turkey gravy with good old cauli cheese maybe? Something to make it special and match the rest of the day. We would still return as the rest of the amazing day outshone everything else but I hope the owners will consider an upgrade to the dinner, even if it adds to the cost, it will be worth it.More

We haven't been back to The Barn for nearly two years as we thought the food was bad then. However we thought we would give it another chance as it really is an historical and most beautiful place. I just had the Barn burger which...was gloppy, undercooked bacon and the bun was not toasted. Cost £15. My partner had the Gluten Free Cottage Pie that had certainly no finesse. It was a small portion of gloppy melted cheese, a few crumbs of watery mince beef and watery potato. Honestly it was gross. Cost £15. This is taking the P&(**. We both felt ill afterward. The menu states they have a chef and that fresh food is cooked daily. This is simply untrue. The Barn needs a re-think with new management who actually care about repeat custom.More

We live very near the pub but don't go often, nor do any of our friends who are local residents. During the day the clientele are mainly noisy lager-swigging types with badly behaved children. Our experience in the evening has been very variable, there seems...to be a high turnover of chefs with an occasional good one who never stays long, the food has varied from excellent to dreadful. We have heard the present chef is good so we went for dinner to celebrate our friends wedding anniversary. Our table was under one of the loudspeakers and the music was rather loud. There was broken glass on the floor, apparently a previous guest at the next table had been brought the wrong drink and had thrown the glass at the wall. The staff had apparently removed him but clearly hadn't had time to clear up the glass. Starters were excellent, very well presented and reasonable portion size. The main courses were ok, tasty and filling but the vegetables for one meal didn't arrive until about ten minutes after the rest of the food. We were told the chef didn't like the way they looked when they came out of the microwave and had started again. They were still of very poor quality and didn't arrive until the rest of the food had been eaten. Our complaint was not handled well, just an apology without an offer to take that meal off the bill or provide any alternative compensation. Sadly we've experienced very late arrival of some of the order here before; getting everything to the table at the same time is one of the most basic requirements of catering and it's disappointing they still can't do this. The cheese board was excellent, plenty of cheese of good quality and variety and some grapes although there were very few biscuits. We did receive very small glasses of complementary port with the cheese. If this was intended to compensate for the late arrival of poor quality vegetables it was a nice gesture, but it wasn't explained. I'm a big fan of Shepherd Neame, but sadly this pub never has any of the seasonal ales, just Whitstable Bay and Masterbrew. Both were well kept. Looking around, most of the customers were drinking lager so perhaps there's not enough demand for real ale here. This is a vicious circle, if they stocked a variety of ale, more real ale drinkers would come. They also don't take part in the free meal in your Birthday scheme, of which I'm a member. I asked for an island malt at the end of the meal and was told they only had Jameson or Bushmills, on reflection they probably thought I had asked for an Ireland malt, an understandable mistake given how loud the music was. We will continue to avoid the pub during the day, but apart from the dreadful vegetables the food was good and we will try an evening meal there again.More

Another Christmas Day at The Barn. Another totally relaxing and unrushed day. Under unbelievable pressure, the staff working there were, as always, professional and personable. The ham, Stilton and fig starter was delicious and just right to get the appetite kick started. The drinks flowed...and nothing was too much trouble. Most of us had the turkey Christmas dinner and two had the pork. Both were lovely, and if anything, even better than last year. We were there for around four hours or so and it gave us time as a family to have a few drinks, chill out and catch up with all the gossip. This is exactly what I, as the family cook, don’t get time for when I cook it at home. I won’t single anyone from the team out, as that’s not fair. Suffice for me to give them all a massive thank you for making the day so special again. I have heard that some found it took too long, but isn’t that the point of having a celebration dinner? After all, you can stick a Rustlers in the microwave if you want something fast; that’s ready in about a minute. Thanks again to all for a fantastic experience.More

I was recommended to the Chestfield Barn by my sister. What a lovely place! It was beautifully decorated inside and out with lights and Christmas decorations. The venue was larger than i expected but had a lovely atmosphere and the staff were fantastic. Although what...I had earmarked as my first and second choices were unavailable due to their popularity, we were not disappointed by the meals we had. We were not rushed at all and found it to be exceptional value for money.More

This restaurant is the perfect place for a celebration. It offers largely open plan eating areas, upstairs and down. A friendly and relaxed attitude to children and dogs is also a bonus. This particular event was a large one, 30 people and on a Saturday...too. Offered a wide range of food choices, ordered in advance, paid a deposit and on the day, everything was quite perfect. No waiting, no rushing either. Food was particularly delicious and friends and family who hadn’t eaten there before were very impressed with the quality and quantity of their meals. Upstairs there was even room for the grandchildren and Great Nephews to play with a balloon or two between courses. The fish pond is always a winner, whatever the time of year, with fish food available on request and free of charge. Unhurried, we left well over two hours after our arrival and could have stayed longer, had we wanted to. Hats off to Louise and The Chestfield Barn Team 👏More
