This could so easily have been a five star review because The Ship is a lovely country pub with pleasant staff, a great menu and drinks choice. Unfortunately there were small issues that just took the shine off the experience. We were a family group of widely mixed age and we all chose to eat a Sunday roast. Our food was delivered haphazardly with almost 10 minutes between the first and last plate. The vegetables came next to last and were on the raw side of al dente, which is fine and welcome for many, but large firm florets of broccoli or batons of carrot and swede are a struggle for older people to eat. We had to ask for condiments, who doesn’t want mint sauce with lamb, horseradish with beef or apple sauce with pork?! After a tedious wait with the dinner growing colder, mint and cranberry arrived and a further scurry for apple sauce eventually found they had run out. Very disappointing. The food itself was very good all round, except the roast potatoes were solid and barely roasted, though the giant fluffy Yorkshire pudding possibly made up for that. Overall, we would recommend The Ship. I would suggest that, similar to other pubs, as soon as someone orders a roast, bring out the condiments, serve all the plates as soon as possible together and possibly cook the vegetables a bit longer.

Hello,
Thank you for your feed back, we really appreciate this so we can do things differently if need be. We are really pleased you enjoyed your time with us, we are sorry it took longer than normal to get all your meals out but unfortunately with the size of your party and only a food pass to hold 6 plates at one time the chef did the best he possibly could for a party if 31. We have taken on board your comments and we will action were necessary.
We wish you all the best and hope you will visit again when you are in the area.
Kind regards,
Christine, Jim and team.

At the heart of the village of Wincle, the pub draws you in with a cosy atmosphere and rustic ambience. A selection of well kept, hand pulled cask ales take pride of position at the bar, with the JW Lee's Founders chestnut ale taking first place in popularity. Personally preferring something a little lighter, a pint of Manchester Pale Ale goes down a refreshing treat.
Though I seldom book ahead, a warm welcome is always received from the team, who are always well informed as to the food choices on offer and who are efficient in their delivery.
Sunday lunch, the roast beef in particular, is a delectable highlight. The meat is cooked to melt in the mouth perfection, and served with crispy roast potatoes, sizable fresh Yorkshire pudding(s), vegetables and delicious gravy. There is also an extensive range of desserts for those of a sweet toothed persuasion.
Highly recommended.

Popped in after a lovely walk nearby today. I spotted on FACEBOOK and on the sign down the road that they have on offer fish and chips for 9.95. Seemed a great deal along with the bread and butter and pot of tea.
Service was excellent, pub is as ever lovely inside with it roaring fires. Sadly the food was rather poor quality, the fish was very soggy and mushy inside the quite thin batter. The fish fillet is obviously frozen which I would expect, however I was disappointed that it was a cheap fillet of catfish or as now advertised in shops basa. Please chef correct me if I'm wrong here.
The mushy peas were dry and flavourless and how the bread had been buttered was laughable. Cold hard butter pressed onto the bread, just leave it out to soften or allow the customer to spread themselves. The chips were delicious, and appeared to be home cooked and fresh, i could be wrong.
Annoyingly when I paid the tab the meal was actually 10.95 not 9.95 as edvertised elsewhere.
Would I visit again YES, would I recommend to others ABSOLUTELY. I will stick to my usual pie meal next time I visit.

We went in both Saturday and Sunday this weekend as a small group of 6, only eating on the Sunday lunch.
The service was quite slow both times; with several members of staff wearing green having to get confirmation from the lady incharge before: booking us a table (on Saturday), taking our food order and finding out the specials of the day (e.g pie of the day, crumble of the day). We sadly asked for the bill 3 times, and we waited 20 minutes for our drinks to the table. There was an even longer wait when we ordered tap water for the table once the food had arrived.
There was soap in the dispenser or paper towels in the dispenser (apparently there's a hand dryer on the other side of the sink which i missed). The wifi was poor, not stretching outside the front of the pub.
The food when it came was ok, the sausages nice, but nothing to write home about. My friends enjoyed their roast. We fully appreciate it was busy.
***Unfortunately I had to delete my review, and am reposting, due to being accused of it being malicious. Images we took on sunday attached for 'proof'!! I was not the booker of the table. I think the response to my previous review (deleted) speaks volumes.

Hello, Mr Norman.
Thank you for re writing your review. My response was purely due to the contents in your first review and we really appreciate the change in your heading.
We pride ourselves on great food and customer service and also the cleanliness of the pub is very important to me, so when you said there was no toilet paper, hand soap or hand towels in the bathrooms it lead me to believe the review wasn't genuine.
I welcome constructive criticism, we can learn from it.
I do apologise if the service was slow when you visited, as you said, it was very busy and we worked really hard to give all our customers great service, sometimes we can get overwhelmed, especially if we are short staffed.
Our of the days (pies and sausages etc) and roasts are written on the board, which you took a picture of, we didn't have any special dishes on that day.
Once you connect to the WiFi inside the pub, the signal reaches to the end of the beer garden, we use our credit card machine outside and we wouldn't be able to do that without signal, sometimes, if the pub is overly busy and everyone is connected to the WiFi, it can be a bit slow given where we are.
When you deleted your original post, my response would also be deleted.
Once again, we apologise for the service you received on your visit.
We wish you all the best for the future.
Christine, Jim and team.

Had dinner here on Friday night as part of a weekend in the Peak. The food (Salt and Pepper Squid for me and Gammon Steak for my colleague) was very tasty, good portion size and sensibly priced. The welcome, service and beer were spot on too.
The welcome was just as good when we re-appeared as part of a charity hill walk/pub crawl the next morning.

Very disappointed ordered roast beef with all the trimmings for Sunday lunch. The plate looked great until you realise the pile of beef in the middle isn't it's a tiny bit of beef pilled on top of a load of roast potatoes my husband had 1 piece of beef 2inches by 3 inches and some bits lucky me I got 1 1/2 pieces terrible. We were informed our veg would be coming so we already had 7 roast potatoes 2 roast carrots an a parsnip out came our veg more boiled potatoes boiled carrots and a teaspoon of cabbage not good. Our meals came with a tiny bit of gravy on them had to ask for more. Home made Yorkshire pudding flat as a pancake. Then to top it all off the server left all are plates and dishes on the table walked passed 3 times cleared the table next to us twice. We waited for her to take the dishes away and get the bill gave up went to the bar and paided will not be going there again and do not recommend it.

This Is the first time we have visited the ship at wincle. Took our friend out for the afternoon as she had recommended here .
Initially we were going to go for a walk in the area which is idyllic for Any one wanting to view the stunning scenery! Altho we chose not to do so due to weather turning cold !
So we just opted for a catch up and a social at the Ship .
We are tbh quite expectant when eating out ! Quality of food for us is extremely important and we don't like to feel dissapointed as I'm sure would be the case for most !
Well what can I say ... after speaking to the delightful Landlady Christine that I would be back and that I would even be bringing my dad !
As he is Jamaican and I couldn't believe that I was fortunate to choose jerk chicken from the menu , I was able to have rice & chips , homemade slaw & corn on the cob!
My husband & friend both chose different dishes which in agreement enjoyed theirs just as much as mine . Chris all I can say your food , attentiveness, prices for the quality and quantity are second to none !
We look forward to seeing you and your lovely staff again in the near future !
Thankyou for a lovely afternoon 💕

Arrived, booked, early on a Saturday evening and were promptly seated and efficiently provided with menus. Drinks came and we ordered our main meals, scampi and jerk chicken.
This is where it went wrong.
No more than 10 minutes later the food arrived! We both knew this was not freshly cooked food.
The scampi was presented ok (but then how could you not?) but 'a large'..? Questionable.
The chicken however had been piled on the plate with the chips, swimming in its sauce, and a 'rubberised' 1/2 corn on the cob.
One mouthful was enough. Microwaved chicken of questionable date is not very pleasant no matter the strength of the coating.
The lovely young lady serving recognised something was amiss and offered an alternative. When I said no, the other equally pleasant server lady suggested two free desserts. These were also refused.
Yes, the chicken was comped, but...
... and the lady taking payment was lacking customer service skills.
Shame.
Could be nice, but it isn't.

Characterful pub in a beautiful location, perfect after a walk in the Peak District.
Beer is well kept cask although a little dull (JWLees) compared to the great local brewery 100m down the road 😋
However, the food we ate was underwhelming. Overpriced at £15 for sausage and mash or pie and chips given the latter didn't come with vegetables apart from literally a tablespoon of pureed peas!

It used to be absolutely mint here but I don't think the new ownership have done it any favours. Went in halfway through our 20km hike for a beer and a bowl of chips. They couldn't do a bowl of chips because they were due a booking in of 15 people (who hadn't even arrived yet). Bit of a joke to be honest, if the kitchen staff can't handle dropping a basket of chips in some oil for literally five minutes, it's time to pack in. Shame because it used to be a great put stop and a hub for hikers

Hi Jessie,
150 covers yesterday in a small kitchen with 1 chef and his assistant, so plenty of heat in the kitchen handled very well.
I told my staff it was reservations only until after 3pm due to the high number of customer reservations, between 12 and 3 and it was certainly a lot more than 15
I do apologise if you were upset about this but I can assure you that the ship inn is going from strength to strength since we took over a year ago.
I do hope you will give us another go if passing and if you can, make a reservation so we can guarantee a table.
Kind regards,
Christine and Jim.

After a most enjoyable 6 mile hike of Luds Church starting at Gradbach there was only one thing to do and that was to find a lovely Country Pub and a Sunday Roast! The experience was wonderful from beginning to end and the staff could not have been more attentive and helpful from recommending the best bitter to helping with vegetarian choices. When our meal arrived we could not have been happier and the staff checked we had everything we needed (and we were a bit demanding). We needed horseradish and ketchup and then mayonnaise as an after thought. The staff could not have been happier to help and really made it such an enjoyable lunch in the tiny village of Wincle! We had such a nice time we forgot to take any photos :(
When I got home I realised that part of my backpack strap had been left there. I messaged and Christine got back to me and she had found it for me! This back pack has been with me for 20 years and it would have rendered it uselesss so Imagine my delight when she said she would post it out to me!
Top service, gorgeous food and beautiful location! Just wonderful. Thank you so much! We will definitely be back.

After visiting Wincle Fete we decided for nostalgia we would visit the Ship Inn as both lads had work here in the past so a bit of loyalty…6 in our family party. The order had been taken via and iPad, we have differing tastes in the party as we went around the table, we had a family member who is lactose intolerant so we asked no butter on the bap! The burger came with butter on the bap, the staff stated it was butter on the bap! A very irate supervisor came to the table and stated it wasn’t butter it was Flora!!! Give me strength…we had not been asked about allergies or intolerances…for god sake we wanted the bap plain! The cheese and onion pie was poor, very watery, the grated cheese hadn’t melted, no potato filling, over use of mustard with grains…couldn’t taste any cheese, a slice of cheese was missing from a burger, no sauce added to another…gammon over cooked…we won’t be visiting again!

Hello Snig,
Thank you for taking time to review the ship Inn.
From your comments we feel we have failed you and i want to apologise fo that.
Can I just point out that we were not informed of any allergies when the order was taken and it does ask you at the bottom of the menu to inform a member of staff when ordering.
We use flora as a substitute for butter which any vegan or lactose intolerant person can have.
We were not serving cheese, onion and potato pie that day, it was advertised as cheese and Leek.
Once the situation with the burger bun was sorted and that was my main concern, I returned to your table and checked everyone was happy and I got a lovely response from you all and no other complaints, so I am left baffled about this 2 star review.
Our aim is to make sure everyone has a lovely experience with us, so I do apologise again if you feel we didn't do this.
Christine, Jim and team wish you all the best for the future.

Our Son and now Daughter in Law held there wedding reception at the Ship Inn @ Wincle. I can not praise Christine & Jim and all the staff enough. The food was amazing and the service and helpfulness from the staff was awesome. They catered for 39 daytime guests, which included a 3 course meal, various choice of starter, mains and dessert included a vegetarian option. c 80 guests in the evening with buffet.

This is a great place for a late lunch after a ramble in the glorious countryside around Wincle. I was with my wife who ordered the Jalapeno sausages, The waiter explained that they are quite spicy (as you would expect) She did enjoy the meal very much and on reflection said she would have gone for something less spicy given the choice. I got lucky as the pie of the day was Steak and Ale, my favourite, and when it arrived it turned out to be the best S&A pie ever tasted with a generous filling of tender steak. Accompanied with perfectly fried chips, gravy and mushy peas. My wife is planning a similar trip with the girls soon and I'd happily re-visit any time we are in the area.
