Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have a house at the top of the hill in Polruan, and visit the Russell Inn quite often. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming with a lovely local feel. They are always happy to do a piece of grilled fish for me so it’s GF and it’s always fresh and tasty. Simple, fresh, tasty food. Reasonable prices, dog friendly with really lovely staff.

Loved this pub, a real local and really friendly staff. They made us feel very welcome even with a large drooly dog!😀
Food is very basic and they only serve in the evenings but will allow you to eat food on the premises from the little cafe next door. We had a takeaway pizza which was well below average and which the bar person had to make herself leaving the bar empty.... but again, another establishment where there is staffing issues??
As a drinking pub I loved it😀

Welcoming down to earth pub serving traditional seaside favourites with a smile.
Staying in Polruan for the week we drank here a few times and found the staff welcoming and friendly. Good selection of local guns. Decided to eat here and arrived early to grab a table as it fills up quickly and you can’t book. The seafood platter (large choice) came with chips decent salad and 2 small freshly naked crusty rolls. A decent falafel burger was given the thumbs up from our daughter (veggie).. a definite thumbs up from us!!

From the start I watched the barman frequently rub his nose and then both handle glasses. When my food arrived, the condiment container was on my plate. I imagine this had been on several other surfaces throughout the day and doubt very much that it had been sanitised before touching my food.

Sadly, I think this pub is going through a transitional time-hopefully for the better! The whole feel of the pub was tired and shabby. Only another couple of customers appeared to pass through whilst we were there and although the pleasant young barmaid was very efficient and friendly, it appeared that there was no upper leadership.
I can’t comment on food as there wasn’t any available.
The pub around the corner is vastly superior and I really hope that this place gets its act together as the village is very pretty and the trip back to Fowey across the water is very nice.

We ate at the restaurant and it was great! Really delicious chips and burgers and good service despite a busy night. The takeaway chicken pizza we got was another matter! It tastes like a cheap store bought pizza and didn't come with half the ingredients listed on the menu. It's the second time we've ordered with the same result, we thought the first time was a mistake and wanted to give it another try. It's a real pity, I hope the chef works on the pizza as it's letting the pub down.

Arrived in Polruan late Friday afternoon in need of food and drink. Headed into The Russell to a warm friendly greeting. Kitchen opens at 6 so we had a drink whilst waiting for our fish and chips. Fish was beautiful, flakes of fresh white fish in a crispy batter but let down by the chips :-( which were flaccid and pale, just needed a bit longer in hotter oil which would have complemented the fish perfectly.

Great little pub near the harbour. Relaxed atmosphere and nice, friendly staff. The real ale is top quality and there is also a decent range of wines and whiskies. Didn’t try the food, but noted that they are happy for you to buy food from the cafe next door and eat it in the pub.

Went in for a drink with my elderly mother and other family members to support the village pub whilst on holiday... only to turntail straight out the door! Was met with the most rude local man who made a very unkind comment about my mother when I asked him, very politely, if he would just move his dog a little. And not one other man, there were about 10 of them, said a word to defend us 4 women... very intimidating! Not very welcoming of tourists I feel!
The Lugger on the hand was very welcoming, extremely accomodating and great fun.

Had a lovely fish pie at this pub and landlord was happy to bag up the leftovers so we could take back and eat the following day. Also attended the quiz night but due to Covid and size of pub there were only about five teams. Nice selection of beers though.

Popped in here for lunch but sadly they'd stopped serving. That didn't stop the friendly and welcoming barman (think he was called Harry) saying 'pop next door for a takeaway sandwich and bring it in'. Thank you! we did that and got a crab sandwich and pasty next door eaten in the pub and washed down with well kept Cornish beer

We came to the Russel in as we didn’t have to book.
Staff were extremely helpful and super friendly. Great choice of drinks however the pub is let down by its food offerings. If you want deep fried you will be ok.
We had fish and chips, whitebait, seafood platter and the chicken platter between us.
Pretty much all the food was deep fried. The cod was actually pretty good, but I would say everything else was below average. The chicken platter being out and out poor in both quality and quantity for the price.
Would definitely come back for drinks as the staff were really nice, but would think twice or need to be desperate to eat here again.

Not been to the Russell for a few years but delighted to enjoy a meal here on Saturday evening. Fish and chips were fantastic and their short menu managed to appeal to my husband’s odd ball tastes - hoisin duck pizza!! Covid measures were thorough and very friendly welcome from all staff made for a great experience. We will be back!

Well it was a first. The first time I paid over £5.00 for a pint of draught beer in a pub in Cornwall, Proper Job £5.10 You don't ask the price in advance as you expect it to be around prices charged elsewhere.
Must be wealthy people left in Polruan in mid November?

To put the record straight for the last reviewer I paid with a £10 pound note and got £4.90 change so there is no way I could get that wrong. Also no way the person serving me who I took to be the landlord could get it wrong. Perhaps its a case of charging more for non locals or non regulars. There was no misunderstanding.
