Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We spent a week with some friends in a holiday cottage outside Ashbourne, Derbyshire and were looking for somewhere to Lunch on our final day. We had read a revue that implied that this Red Lion was a bit special, and so it turned out...to be ! Apart from several of the best pints of Marston's Pedigree that I have ever drunk, the welcome and the food were certainly special and well above average. So this place gets my full and firm recommendation. P.S. they also brew several varieties of good cider on the premises.More

Had a family meet up here. I chose the venue as it is Good Beer Guide listed and both cask ales were in good condition, though there’s an unusually wide range of ciders too. Food was really excellent - not necessarily cheap by pub grub...standards, but you get what you pay for. Service was good and the background music they were playing was up my street too. So anyway, a nice old country pub getting everything right.More

We were staying nearby and came for lunch. Wonderful friendly welcome in what is clearly a well loved local pub. The food was excellent as was the astomsphere. Everyone both sides of the bar was friendly and I recommend a visit!

Went for Sunday lunch yesterday. It was everything I hoped it would be. A traditional and cosy pub serving good ‘home cooked’ food. It was lovely. Nicely presented, good selection of veg, including braised red cabbage. The meat was plentiful and beautifully cooked. Can highly...recommend the lamb. Huge Yorkshire puddings! If you have room, all puddings are cooked by their lovely chef (we met him). Prices reasonable for a quality Sunday roast. You won’t be disappointed.More

We decided to try the Red Lion for an impromptu evening out. Even though it’s only 10 minutes away from where we live, we hadn’t tried it before. A big mistake on our part! It is a very clean, welcoming country pub, serving fresh, well...prepared and tasty food. The serving staff are excellent, with nothing being too much trouble. Would I recommend it? Absolutely! We can’t turn the clock back but we will definitely be back! PS The cider is particularly good also.More

Good honest hospitality at its best. Every effort was made to make us welcome. There were 12 of us for Sunday lunch and everyone was impressed with the quality of the home-cooked food, especially at such a good price. They were very proud of their...chef and rightly so. Well done!More

After a lovely day at Chatsworth we came across the pub on our way home and called in for food. From the moment we walked in we were met with the friendliest of welcomes. 1 member of our party has food alagies which did not...faze them at all. The food was home made and delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We found a little gem and will definitely return.Thankyou.More

Stopped in for Sunday Lunch. A warm welcome, excellent roast beef and trimmings and home made and locally sourced puds with amazingly creamy custard. Son had the homemade burger with very local beef, this was also excellent and he said it was the best he's...had and from the bite i had, i have to agree. We will go back!More

I know they are not open Mon and Tues. We left a provisional booking on the answerphone and it was fine. I think life just moves at a more sedate pace in Kniveton than in the city! Who has got it right :-)

We don't have a children's menu but do welcome well behaved children as we are a small intimate dining experience who welcome children at lunch but unfortunately not in the evening.
