Our group (we were wearing 16th and 17th period clothing) came here last year and had such a wonderful time we decided to return. This year however, things did not run as smooth as last year, miscommunication and messages not delivered to the right departments...meant that on my arrival, when the majority of the our group had arrived, I had to wait to speak to a member of staff, because the meals I had previously booked no longer equalled the amount of people present. Luckily, I had made a note of the ladies that I had spoken to, the messages I had given them and their replies plus times/dates of the conversations. It did only take about 5 or so minutes to sort out. I had been told when I rang that our table would be ready for 6.30pm, how ever it wasn't and we had to wait to be seated. To be fair we went on December 16th and being a Saturday, it was very busy and we weren't the only people in for dinner. Our single table for 21 people previously promised was now 2 tables one seating 8 people and the remainder on a different table. We had previously given the food choices to reception in advance and due to the dietary needs of some members of the group, I had asked about a change to the festive fair menu, which was kindly arranged. Instead of the festive fair we had a special menu designed to suit everyone, we agreed to pay the same price as the festive fair. After being seated, we waited for our soup to arrive, which was delicious, After that though things went awry. There were only a couple of waitresses, serving all 21 of us, our main meal was in effect a carvery - unfortunately whoever was plating the meals didn't do a consistent job, 2 people who had chosen the turkey were both given very small portions (child size), whilst the people that had chosen the beef had a lot more meat on their plates. When the vegetables arrived the dishes were between 2 people. The dish I was sharing with my husband consisted of 4 very small brussels, a spoonful of cauliflower, and a small amount of sliced carrots (which were cold), Also on my plate was a spoonful of mashed potatoes which was hidden underneath the small single slice of turkey and 2 roast potatoes. The other person on our table of 8 who also had a child's portion didn't want gravy on her dinner, but she did have an extra small roast potato. No one had any complaints on the larger table as to quantity of food on their plates. The dessert menu was full of delicious choices - a single waitress came and took our orders, 12 people received their desserts the other 9 didn't get anything, however, one of the waitresses returning from serving another table cam over and we asked where the other desserts were, she came back with another pad and took the 9 orders, 2 waitresses started to serve the missing desserts, but still managed to get 2 of them wrong. 2 of our gentlemen ordered the cheese platters, one oif them paid the supplement to the waitress, the other was told it would be added to the final balance. After we had all finished eating we retired to the residents lounge which had been put at our disposal. I went to the bar to fetch my husband a drink, the staff behind the bar numbered 4, I was dressed as an Elizabethan noble woman, and none of them turned around to serve me, from what I could see they weren't particularly busy, I tried to catch their eye in the mirror, but although I did manage to make eye contact, with one of the women she didn't turn round or acknowledge my presence. Then a man from a different party also came to the bar and to my utter surprise, not only did one of them turn around immediately, they spoke to him and served him completely ignoring me. After the drink experience I was somewhat reluctant to go back to the bar to pay the balance, but as one of the founders of the group and the treasurer it's my job to make sure everything is actioned. Again, whilst standing there I was completely ignored - when the bill was finally produced there were items I wasn't paying for and I went back to our table to collect the money from the others, eventually everything was sorted. I thanked them as most of our group had had a wonderful time. On getting home, both myself and the other lady who had had a very small meal, cooked something for us to eat. I also found out that we had been charged the supplement for 3 cheese boards when we only had 2. I understood from previous visits that the deposits were non-refundable on the family of 3 who were unable to join us. Although your establishment is steeped in history and 2022 was wonderful - this year 2023 wasn't.More

I’m in between house moves so I decided to have a nice quiet retreat… And I’m so glad I did! The staff here are another level… And to add to this, the room, the food the selection of drinks we all first rate? The whole...experience was lovely, and I can’t wait to come back again soon?More

First of all, I liked this place: it’s cosy and the staff are very friendly. But it bills itself as a gastropub and I believe it falls short of what’s required to meet that description. I had a very nice rump steak and chips, but...that doesn’t need a master chef. My 2 companions both had roast turkey, swimming in gravy and with a vegetable pot accompaniment that took me back to school dinners in the 60s. No one cooks vegetables like this any more - boiled to a tasteless mush. I was also underwhelmed by my prawn cocktail starter which consisted of 5 frozen prawns on a few green leaves with Marie Rose sauce plonked on top. Yet the place was full, which suggests a lack of competition in the area. Could do better is my verdict.More

Staff very friendly and helpful but food not good. Five prawns on a plate with a small amount of sauce, not enough for coverage, does not make a prawn cocktail. Pheasant was over cooked and so lost any gaminess. Medium rare fillet steak was definitely...medium well done, which was a shame for such a nice cut of meat. Pricing suggested better quality so disappointed. So much so we cancelled the next evening meal booking. Rooms ok but toilet is located is immediately behind the bathroom door so make sure you lock the door or risk a concussion!More

The best thing about the hotel was the staff. Friendly and attentive. Bed was comfy and room was clean. Bathroom needed an update but it’s tough for these establishments at the moment. Unfortunately though the walls are like paper so we were doing great until...Some noisy guests arrived back from a function at about 1 and proceeded to chat at normal volume for about an hour. Then one left to go upstairs. Their room was evidently above ours as we heard everything from the squealing water pipes while they had a shower at 2am and then must have been trying to top up their steps by walking round the room on the noisiest joists I’ve ever heard. Then only to rejoin the guests next door for another half hour of chat. We were shattered by the morning. Wi-Fi was good, pleat of hot water and breakfast good.More

What a great find! Home made chips is one of my searches when looking to go out to eat and if they are dog friendly. Me and my Mum were in this area on holiday. Came on the Saturday first and we sat outside and...had the daily Turkey roast dinner and fish and chips. Very good value for money. Then we came back the next day and had the Turkey roast and steak and stout pie. The pie was shortcrust pastry and very tender beef. Staff very lovely. Will probably have to come back one more time before our holiday ends.More

Found this hotel pub at short notice for an overnight stay with our dog, I would highly recommend it particularly because the staff are very pleasant, helpful and friendly. If you are not a dog person yourself then don’t let that put you off because...sensibly there are areas where dogs are allowed and those where they are not but the allowed areas are equally pleasant so there is no sense of being shoved in a corner! We had the last room which is in a separate single storey block which looks like converted outbuildings, from the outside it didn’t look too inviting but the room itself was absolutely fine, clean, well appointed with all facilities and equally as good as many modern Travelodges I’ve stayed in for more money so we were very satisfied with that. Good selection at the bar and the food was very good. All in all I would recommend, particularly as somewhere to visit with a dog!More

I’ve been going to this pub/restaurant for several years now with my family or friends and it never fails to disappoint. The food is always spot on and the waiting staff are always very attentive, helpful and polite. The Boars Head is always clean and...spotless which is ran by a very hard working family and team that take pride of it. Definitely recommend calling in for a Sunday roast or breakfast😍More
