Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I went in to see if they were showing the Ipswich-Leicester game last night which they said “of course we will” I then stayed and had Surf and Turf which I must say it must have been the tastiest Rump steak I’ve had since I...have been there since September. The range of beers lagers etc they serve are amazing also friendly staff and very helpful. Definitely be back in the weekMore

A wet a winding day required an old school British boozer with tradition food and values, This place has it in an abundance, From the warm welcome to overhearing a well documented explanation of all the wines available, Food was orders (chicken gouging platter and...steak and ale pie, side of homemade onion rings) Both meals arrived piping hot and very well presented, Upon cutting into the pie, the smell and steam presented itself like a breath of fresh air, Tasted beautiful and if I had more room I would have ordered another pie(always next time) The chicken gougons were complemented with garlic mayo, coleslaw and BBQ dips a fresh salad and more chips than a family of 5 could handle, Would definitely recommend a visit and will one day call in for another round of drinks and a heart meal, Well doneMore

Really gone downhill. Two bouncers on the door on a Sunday evening is never a good sign. Had come for food before a gig. Ordered drinks, sat down, made a selection from the menu... "the kitchen's closed ." No explanation, no apology. Had checked times...in advance and arrived hours before food was meant to finish. Menus were still out on tables. Total joke. Left frantically trying to find somewhere to eat in the time we had available. Been coming here for years and won't be back.More

There is plenty of room in the pub and the selection of different pints is extremely vast. The staff were extremely friendly, especially the barmaid, Anna.

Food okay as was the beer. We played pool which made it more enjoyable. For such a historic pub was expecting a different atmosphere, heavy metal band practising upstairs. Maybe I'm just getting curmudgeonly.

Taken by the lovely old facade & interior features of this very old pub, so went for a drink after Lion King nearby. Drinks (Inch's cider & an ale) good & price OK for Bristol & service prompt. Problem was the rowdiness - a party...of half-trollied hens at 5.30pm had taken over one bar & a group of loud men the other. We did find a quietish table by the window next to two students, but I wouldn't have wanted to eat here, as I had half intended. The bouncer who had appeared on the door as we left confirmed our impression - this pub is not for those wanting a relaxed post-show drink, despite its proximity to The Hippodrome.More

Yesterday -11th June 2023 - myself, daughter, son in law and two grandchildren travelled to Bristol from Bridgwater to see The Lion King at the Bristol Hippodrome. We decided to arrive early so that we could all have lunch before going to see the show....We googled places to eat close to the theatre and The Hatchet came up as the oldest in Bristol and did food. Couldn't be happier with the choice. Not only was it a quirky looking pub from the outside, inside was well designed and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. My youngest grandson (10 years old) loves beef so he had the roast beef carvery. He's pretty fussy and very vocal if he thinks the meat is tough or tasteless but he was very pleased with his dinner. He said it was the best place he'd had beef and that it was delicious. I can agree as I had the carvery with roast lamb and a small piece of beef and can honestly say it was one of the best carvery's I have had in a while. My daughter and son in law agreed. Plates were piled high and we were thoroughly full. All plates cleared. The chef was very accommodating and plated up exactly what you asked for. The gravy was soooo good. My other grandson (12 years old) ordered the cheese burger. This looked amazing and was huge. The chips were double cooked and lovely. Nice side salad and loads of cheese (proper cheese). All in all we will return for food here. Pleasant surroundings, good food, great selection of drinks and very friendly staff. Just a note............... The pub is over 18's only most of the week, but on Sundays they have families in. This basically means there is no childrens menu and so meals are all the same size and same price. Good value for money though for a city. £11.99 for carvery and the cheeseburger was £10.99.More

Food was ok, but nothing special, standard pub grub. Very noisy, but understandable as prior to a gig at the nearby o2 academy.

Interesting to read the last review because on the same day, My friend and I (both early 40's) were refused entry with my dog. She is a small terrier and has been in the pub several times before without issue. We were told that we...couldn't come in because the pub was too full and it was not safe to have a dog in the pub. I said that we planned to sit in the garden and were told that this too was full and populated by rowdy stag do's. On looking round the pub, the area by the bar was busy as a large group came in before us, but the area by the second downstairs bar was only half full, the garden was half full and everyone was sitting down quietly chatting. No idea what their problem was. The ladies toilets still don't have any functioning locks either.More

Looks super from the outside, but we weren’t allowed in, because we were a group of 7 people. I thought I’d got in a Time Machine and gone back to the 1990s, when I was 20. They didn’t let us 7 middle aged couples on,...in case we really tore the place up 🤷‍♂️; embarrassing of themMore

Sunday carvery. Had low expectations as carvery’s are generally not great but the food we had was inedible. £9.99 the meat was dry and tasteless the roast potatoes were not real spuds. Veggies were ok. Plenty of people did seem to finish their plates so...I may be in the minority but for a few extra quid there is so many more decent roasts in BristolMore

Popped in before going to see Marcus King at the O2 opposite. A warm welcome from friendly staff. Ordered our food which arrived well presented and hot. Obviously the nearest pub to the venue, so it got quite busy, this was handled by the staff...without any issues waiting for drinks. Will definitely return.More

I meant to say doorstaff not bar staff. Although the barstaff were less than helpful about the situation.
