Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A charming and quintessentially English restaurant in a delightful period building surrounded by a rose-filled cottage garden nestled in a wonderful position in the heart of historic Ely. Vintage finds and art works for sale adorn the dining space, making it feel very homely. The...waitress was friendly and efficient and all the food home cooked from fresh in the kitchen betwixt both dining rooms. I ordered a vegan lunch a week in advance but was a little disappointed to find on the day that only the main course on offer was vegan, especially as it was my birthday lunch. Updating the menu to include a couple of vegan starters, mains and desserts would be more inclusive, despite the waitresses assertion that "we are not a vegan restaurant". A restaurant doesn't have to be a 'vegan restaurant' to offer a few vegan options. I still recommend this hidden gem of a restaurant, which is quite unique and rather lovely with its gorgeous garden. Although anyone vegan will have limited options and need to order in advance.More

Appalling meal. The wine was off but they did replace it. The pork was like cardboard, had 2 tiny potatoes each, a piece of stuffing which would fit on a desert spoon and some very boring bland vegetables. Maybe enough food to feed a 5...year old. We had 3 pork dinners, 2 glasses of wine and a coke for £90. Wouldn't mind paying for small portions if the food was good but this was absolutely terrible. Will definitely not go back. This restaurant was good once - so disappointed as this was a supposed to be a nice family meal out. Do not bookMore

So noisy you couldn't hear, service slow, had to ask for a simple glass water 5 times, couldn't seem to get the no ice no fruit!! Portions small, the broad beans and carrots that were supposed to be for 3 only served one, and the...beans were so overcooked as to be tough, the carrots had been sitting so long were soggy. The gluten free wasn't and made our companion ill. The fish was dry and the accompanying prawn sauce with the tiny rubber prawns in was awful. We got given a pat of butter as we had no starters, but no bread?????? The single vegetarian option wasn't something my husband could eat so had to ask to get a starter made up to main, starter size 9.10, as a main 22.50 with the portion size not equal with the increase in price. Cream on the side of CAMBRIDGE BURNT CREAM was split. Will not be going back. A coke, 2 bitter shandy, 4 mains, 4 desserts £140.50 Upset stomach after. Couldn't get out fast enough.More

So disappointing now after some lovely times previously. 2 of our party of 4 were unwell following our meal. Party member gluten free so had the ham, jacket potato and salad followed by the cambridge burnt cream (creme brulee). She was feeling bad as we...left and it continued when we reached home. Our friend had seabass and was also unwell. Service was terrible altho the young lady was doing her best. Too many tables squeezed together which made it hard to hear any conversation. We understand there have been some changes and we hope that things improve for them going forward.More

This restaurant is a great little find. Quite unique. We were greeted in person at the front door of the pretty georgian house by Ann and her very friendly Lurcher Cross. It felt like we were being warmly invited into a home. The dining room...is reached via the kitchen where the cooks (all female) are going about preparing the lunch. The menu is seasonal English and dishes are prepared with love and care. We had pigeon terrine and a goats cheese and walnut salad, followed by roast loin of pork with fresh herb stuffing (gorgeous) and ox cheek casserole (amazing according to my partner). Pudding was sherry trifle topped with a cloud of fresh custard and cream, and warm and delightfully almondy Bakewell tart. I lament the fact that it's nearly impossible to find restaurants like The Old Fire Engine House these days. Everything is either a 'Gastropub' (inverted commas deliberate) or part of a chain which might have been great when launched but which has now become derivative and not very good. Bravo to Ann and the team, this place is so special in the times we live in now. Thank you, Claire and Andrew xMore

We enjoyed a most pleasant lunch in this fine house, in a quiet location, at a reasonable price. I liked the choices on the menu, including smoked eel and potato tart. A few parking spaces on the doorstep. Recommended.

We visited today for Sunday lunch and we werent disappointed. The setting is lovely, mixing old and new, if you eat in the rear dining room, as we did, you walk thro the kitchen, so good to see. We both had roast beef, could have...been pinker, but we both really enjoyed it all, a nice touch is that they offer you more of anything if you would like. For desert I had sherry trifle, it was lovely ( could have had more sherry in for my own taste) and took me back to my grans kitchen. The wine was good, and not overpriced, and the service was friendly without being rushed. On the whole we really enjoyed it, its like homemade food and will definitely go back. 😁More

We all agreed that the food was very good. It was good value, with a friendly service, a good atmosphere and a great location. We will definitely go back. Thank you to all the staff.

Sadly, this was a very disappointing experience. The restaurant was understaffed and service was slow, so slow that we gave up waiting for our main course plates to be cleared and left without sampling any of the desserts. The food was mediocre at best. My...starter of the beetroot and goats cheese salad lacked any dressing and was therefore rather bland. I had sea bass with a prawn sauce as a main course. It was a while since the fish had been in the sea and the prawns were non-existent. My partner had pigeon casserole which turned out to be a whole pigeon with very little sauce and an overcooked jacket potato. All very disappointing and expensive too.More

Huge disappointment! For the main course two of us had pigeon and bacon casserole. A whole pigeon arrived overcooked, so very dry. The accompanying baked potato was also overcooked, with a skin so hard that I had to use the steak knife I had been...given to cut through it. It had clearly been microwaved for too long and not oven baked. My guest did not attempt to eat his burnt baked potato. A third person had the seabass, which she said wasn't fresh. A fourth person had the lamb, which was acceptable but not top restaurant quality. The service was dreadful. I don't blame the waitress, who was rushed off her feet with too many tables to serve. A pity: this restaurant used to be so good.More

Tried to book a family lunch last week as we had had a lovely meal the last time we visited Ely a few years ago and it is so convenient for the Cathedral Each time I phoned ,and many times over 3 days I had...the answerphone even when the website said they were open. When we arrived in Ely last week I went to the restaurant in case I could book the same day only to find it closed. All a bit frustrating !!More

If you find yourself in Cambridge, check this place out.... Very under rated!!! There is a lot of space but recommended to book ahead for larger groups 😉 Please blame the wine for the lack /quality of food in the photos. Starter - crab mayonnaise....Simple but beautiful I had the haddock which also had prawns, dill and crayfish in an incredibly creamy sauce ( I'd cut it all up before remembering to take a photo) - this dish was STUNNING. I would definitely get it again. But the winner of the evening was the Cambridge burnt cream dessert. 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Oh my God, I would have bought a pint of it if I could, goooorgeous. Bear in mind the menu on the website is a lot less than what they can offer on the day as many of their dishes change dailyMore

Birthday treat for my partner. Food good, as per normal, however the service was appalling. I really dislike sitting with the detritus of a finished meal in front of me. On an adjacent table the main courses were bought in without the table having being...cleared. I also had to seek out the waiter to chase up my glass of wine. If this had been our first visit I doubt we would consider the venue for a return visit.More
