Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Firstly, we went here 4 times in a week - but you can't write four separate reviews in this time-frame - regardless of how legitimate they are - so here's 4 different visits in one review. 1. The Food - always lots of it. a)...Sunday night Roasts - beef and belly pork between us - both were excellent and plentiful. b) Monday night - Beef burger - without bun (HUGE beef patty) and rump steak - both outstanding. x3 scoops of ice cream for Sam - again - good. c) Tuesday night - Beef burger without bun and Mariner's mushrooms with bread (followed by 3 scoops of Ice cream for Sam - again lovely meal. d) Thursday night - Lamb stew. Waiter tried serving it to the table next to us and then took it away before we could say anything. it arrived 5 minutes later - luke warm. Bread & butter only for me (bit of an upset stomach) - and x3 scoops of ice cream for him. 2. Waiting staff. Oh dear - VERY hit and miss, and the left hand didn't know what the right was doing half the time. Orders would come out incomplete and staff seemed not to remember that if you're given a menu in the Galley (not the bar) you'd actually like to order something before the place closes. There needs to be someone overseeing the place to ensure people aren't forgotten - even on 'quieter' nights. Accordingly, you've lost a mark (or 20%) because of the disorganised waiting staff.More

This was recommended to us…we ordered food…the bar staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was really welcoming, We ordered the home made beef burgers and they were amazing….but the mushroom dish was awful…it was a bowl of mushrooms for the veggie and was awful...😫it is what it is…chef needs to look at this…we had to order garlic bread as an extra to make it eatible…chef needs to change this as no one wants to eat three punnets of mushrooms for a mushroom dish for a meal 😳I have to be honest that I was very disappointed after paying £16 for a bowl of mushrooms…I also saw a staff member pour a glass of wine back into a bottle after a mistake of order…shame as it started so well! Need to look at the menu especially for veggies!More

Drinks were flat, pumps need cleaning and my daughters were told off for eating fudge! Will not be back which is a shame as it's a lovely looking pub

Ordered belly pork for Sunday lunch. Meat was really tough and difficult to chew. I sent this back but the replacement was just as chewy. Manager refused to offer a more tender alternative meat or some form of refund. This was not acceptable and I...was very disappointed.More

The Ancient Mariner was on the waterfront in Lynmouth and I would suggest you go there more for the atmosphere than the food, which was typical pub grub and quite good. There was a great deal of marine artifacts in the hotel and overall a...good experience.More

This pub is steeped in maritime history as the name may suggest. It's a great location right on the water front and the roaring fire was most welcoming on a cold winters day. We initially went in for a quick afternoon tipple but pretty quickly...decided to book and have dinner later in the evening due to the menu that was on offer. Thanks to Sandra and her team for making us feel really welcome and for the excellent service we received when having dinner. The food was of a good standard, the scotch egg starter we shared was delicious the lamb and dumplings stew and the fish pie mains we had tasted as good as it read on the menu, genourous helpings as well! Over all a great pub experience, lots of memorabilia to look at and the impromptu sea shanty singers session capped of a really immersive experience.More

I emailed at first to arrange lunch for boxing day. I received a reply within a short time confirming they were open and serving food. I called to confirm my booking, spoke to a very friendly and helpful lady who told me all about the...boxing Day tug of war event that takes place right outside. We arrived was shown to our table. The food was very good as was the service despite the fact that the pub got very busy the staff remained calm and friendly. This is our second visit in as many months and we would have no hesitation in recommending or returningMore

Visited on Thursday afternoon in November when a lot of other places in the village had closed for winter. It was freezing outside but the fire was roaring and the welcome warm. The menu is varied, plenty of vegetarian options, and both our lunches were...fresh and delicious. Service was great and the dogs were very welcome. We will definitely be back.More

Fabulous characterful pub-restaurant with vegan options and dog friendly. It’s a really nice maritime themed pub, the person serving was extremely helpful. Dogs welcome and plenty of space. Vegan pan-fried lobster with sweet potato salad was one of the options and it was delicious. Also...has vegan BLT. RecommendMore

Went in for Sunday lunch and must say it wasn't the greatest. The vegetables were alright except the roast potatoes were more grease than potatoe. The meat we had lamb was so chewy we couldn't eat it or cut it !! Couldn't get a refund...as we had already paid and when we did complain the waitress walked off 🙄, however we did speak to a lovely gentleman who was very apologetic and did seem to sympathise. apart from the meal the restaurant and bar looked lovely.More

Sunday lunch was very disappointing and we wouldn’t risk returning. The roast beef was inedible, replaced with the roast pork which wasn’t much better. The table next to us said the roast lamb they had was chewy. We wondered why the dining room was so...quiet for a Sunday lunch, now we know why. A new chef is required for sure!! We must say the front of house staff were very attentive and friendly.More
