The Early Bird restaurant offers a nostalgic and welcoming atmosphere that many guests find charming. However, the dining experience receives mixed reviews, with some visitors enjoying the food quality and presentation, while others are left disappointed. Although the service garners praise for its friendliness and attentiveness, critics are vocal about the premature service charge and lack of consistency. Moreover, there's a general sentiment of dissatisfaction regarding the restaurant's value, as high prices and unpredictable quality leave some diners questioning the worth of their meal.

We always come to the Early Bird with friends for brunch and a sweet treat. The staff are always extremely friendly and the delicious food is always served swiftly (and with a smile!) There’s a good variety of food options and it’s reasonably priced considering the large portions they serve. If you’re ordering brunch, make sure you get a side of chicken salt hash browns - they’re amazing! 🐓🧂 Great to see the café diversify throughout the pandemic with the addition of more brownies/blondies, as well as postal deliveries. The brownies/blondies are superb and definitely better than the other competitors in the city - worth a try with your brunch or to take home! A brilliant addition to Mutley Plain 😊

My family and I have been here several times since they've opened and we have never been disappointed. We even ordered delivery when they were shut due to Covid and the quality was still outstanding. They've recently added new dishes to their menu which we tried today and they were amazing. This is our go to brunch restaurant in Plymouth, the food is always delicious and reasonably priced and the service and atmosphere is fantastic as well.

I’ve ordered more brownie/blondie boxes over the last couple of months than I count, and I am yet to be disappointed by the quality and value for money that I receive! The staff are all so friendly and cheerful. We recently visited for brunch for the first time - I ordered a veggie breakfast and my friend ordered a chicken sandwich with chicken salt fries. The portions were huge, we couldn’t quite finish it all! We’ll definitely be back to eat in once the restaurant reopens for indoor dining. Ps: PLEASE make more blookies!!!

Breakfast was half decent, maybe needs to focus more on healthy foods? Coffee - ordered cappuccino and got stained warmed milk... asked for it to be rectified and the 2nd coffee wasn’t any better. Would visit again if they can sort the coffee out 👍🏻

Today is my first visit to The Early Bird and my first post lockdown venture to any kind of eatery. I was understandably a bit anxious but had seen The Early Bird as I drove past and thought it looked great so decided to give it a go. The safety measures they have put in place are working really well, the staff are cleaning meticulously, tables are nicely separated and even the menus are being cleaned after you handle them - but none of that impacts on the ambience or level of service. The staff are all very friendly and are clearly proud of their business. I’m now sat here, having just sampled their delicious Veggie breakfast (halloumi, hash brown, baked beans, tomato, mushrooms, egg, sourdough toast) which was absolutely delicious. Not at all greasy and every element so tasty. The cake counter is groaning with a vast array of baked goods from savoury through to doughnuts, brownies, blondies and cinnamon buns. The queue is now out the door and I’m not surprised. If the number of people buying their boxes of 4 cakes for around £10 is anything to go by they clearly are every bit as good as they look. My friend has just sampled the Boston cream filled doughnut with chocolate glaze and assures me it was delicious. I’m saving my white chocolate and cinnamon bun for later (top tip is to warm it for 30 seconds to make it even more gooey apparently) as I have no room now. And the double decker brownie will have to wait until another time! This is a fantastic little find, my only regret is that it has taken me a year to find The Early Bird. Wishing them continued success and a very happy first birthday.

The cosy cafe is located middle of Mutley. I come here a fair bit since it first opened. I love the breakfasts, salted caramel cheesecake and pancakes with apple and mascarpone and the classic caramelised banana and Nutella pancakes. The breads are available to buy for home fresh as well as the lovely selection of cakes. Today’s choice is Victoria’s sponge, carrot cake, choc orange cake, millionaires shortbread, cinnamon and banana bread and cinnamon buns. I can vouch for all of these except the choc orange as I don’t like orange. The staff are so friendly and cheerful as well as efficient clearing the tables. They are all so passionate in what they do and today someone complimented what I think was the steak/cheese baguette and I heard the chef give a cheer. They really are a lovely bunch. They also have babyseats available to those with wee ones. All in all it’s a lovely place and deffo worth a visit Only quip is they need a sign with food service times maybe?? I really couldnt think of anything negative.

We came here at the end of the COVID lockdown and simply had to return. We arrived just before opening at 0930 and there was already a short queue. Seating is reduced because of Social Distancing restrictions but we were able to get a table. The food is simply delicious as can be seen from the photos. A Breakfast Stack and Pesto Beans on Toast. Unsurprisingly there was an almost continuous queue for both take away and eat in food. Even if you have to wait it is well worth it. Just prior to leaving we brought some of the home made Brownies and Donuts. They won't last very long! We will absolutely be returning and The Early Bird will become a regular haunt when we are back in Plymouth.

I have eaten out quite a bit since the restrictions have been eased regarding Covid-19 - but I haven't been to one restaurant other then the Early Bird where I've had to eat out of a takeaway box instead of from a plate. Not only was it lacklustre to eat out of cardboard box, it's also depressingly wasteful. The food itself, cakes bread etc all delicious but it was the wrong choice to chose as somewhere special for my daughter and I to go to celebrate her GCSEs. My friend and her family joined us, my friend owns her own cafe, and her food is served with proper cutlery on a nice, white plate. Much more appetising. Also there is no lavatory available, which further cut short our visit. We'll be back when proper plates are back.

We are glad that you enjoyed the food that you had with us at the Early Bird and that it was all "delicious". We pride ourselves on our food, ambience and service. We know that eating out of takeaway containers is not ideal at the moment but we are in the middle of a Pandemic and being an independent business owner at this unprecedented time we have had to make some very difficult decisions. These have included staff cuts, refocusing the business and trying to incorporate all the government guidelines as well as trying to keep the business profitable especially as we are just over a year old. I'm sure that your friend that has her own cafe knows just how challenging a time this is. We made the decision over lock down to offer deliveries and expand our bakery, this has impacted on space in the cafe and that combined with keeping our customers and staff safe we are currently offering a takeaway service with the option to have this to eat inside if you wish. It does state very clearly on our social media that we are doing this and also made clear at the time of ordering. If you were looking for a restaurant that is back in "full swing" during this time then ours would not be one to choose. We do have a toilet with full disabled facilities however this is currently under refurbishment and should be back in use within the next few days. Our bakery extension is due to be completed in the next fortnight which will allow us to get back to service as usual, cutlery, plates e.t.c which we are very excited about. We won't apologise for the decisions we have made as a business during this difficult time and many of our customers are happy to have us back however we serve our food. I think that giving us a 3 star rating is very unfair and certainly very unsupportive of a small business trying it's best. If you can't support us now when we need it the most then please don't bother coming and supporting us when we have "proper plates"

I've been meaning to review The Early Bird since it opened as I am a repeat customer and have never had anything less than the best experience here. Today was no different! I met my mum for lunch (as she is a big EB fan as well) and we were served by cheerful staff who are always just the right amount of attentive. My Early Bird Brunch was delicious, particularly the lovely juicy sausage and perfectly-cooked bacon - there's nothing worse than floppy anaemic bacon, and you won't find that here! I also appreciated the offer of an extra hash brown when I asked for the baked beans to be left out of my order. Mum really enjoyed her smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, and when the portion size defeated her the staff happily provided her with a takeaway box to enjoy the rest later. The atmosphere at the Early Bird is always so welcoming and buzzing and as a Mutley resident who frequently walks past the place, it's great to see it always looking so busy. The inability to book ahead means that getting a table is not always guaranteed, but I do understand why the EB does this and seeing people queuing outside to snag a table is the perfect way to show passers-by that it's worth the wait! There is a reason why the Early Bird is always so busy, and that is because it's fantastic.

So good to see you open again. I watched your new business from the top deck of the bus in the early part of this year on my route into work everyday but never got around to visiting. Lockdown happened and your business closed then opened for delivery service, beautiful bread and cakes were ordered and finally I got to have brunch yesterday. We had the cooked breakfast, although it was served in a cardboard box (temporary arrangement I understand), this did not detract from the service and quality of produce. The sausages are absolutely delicious! When we left we brought home a ‘box of 6’ for a weekend treat and are working our way through them, each one delicious. Bravo to you all for your hard work and inventiveness, your business has had to develop and change in unusual circumstances and you should all be very proud. A real asset to Mutley Plain, love it

Thank you so much for your amazing review! We are so glad to be back open again! Good news is that the expansion of our bakery is complete and we are back to crockery and our toilet has reopened. It’s certainly been a journey for us during lockdown but great knowing we have such support from our loyal customers 😊

We finally had our first takeaway breakfast from earlybird. The place was packed people were queuing into the street. The lovely staff came and gave them matching bright umbrellas while they waited. Food came quickly nicely packaged. It was beautiful(fresh and hot). I particularly liked how the items of the cooked breakfast were in separate trys so nothing got soggy! Our new favourite restaurant. Can't wait till we can go back again and try something else.

My first visit to Early Bird was with my son in the summer after a hospital appt - we were recommend it for breakfast and we certainly not at all disappointed . We have been back since , once with my husband , due to the current situation we are in we had to wait outside for a while , my husband waits for nothing but he totally agreed with me it was well worth the wait . The food is amazing , staff so friendly and helpful and even though we are currently in a pandemic I felt completely safe inside The Early Bird. On top of this our daughter has been in lockdown in Cardiff since the 26/9 , first as a city then as a country coming out of the fire break last week. All she wanted was some Lindt brownies but sadly their were sold out by the time we got there ( and that was only an hr after opening - trust me you can’t hang around if you want some) I mention Sarah’s plea and they kindly popped Lindt brownies on their website a week before they planned too. Sarah was extremely happy wen she recd her delivery . All I can say is whatever the Early Bird are doing they are doing it right . Don’t ever change x

I have heard a lot of good feedback so thought I'd give it a try. Always nice to see a family run eatery as opposed to chain's where you do not get the same sort of service, Plymouth seems to have a lot of them now. We were not disappointed one bit. The team were very welcoming and friendly, greeted at door by a very happy friendly young lady and was seated. You could see staff were a happy bunch which reflected on the atmosphere. The food was freshly cooked and amazing!!!! A few different things on menu. Beats Boston tea party hands down although similar decor feel. I did like the open plan kitchen as you can see food being cooked nothing to hide, was also very clean. can't wait to go again! well done all at Early Birds will see you again very soon 😁.

I normally visit for take away (doughnuts and blondie/brownies - which by the way are absolutely amazing 😍). But today I wanted to sample their food, and omg they don’t just make fantastic sweet treats, but outstanding food!!! The staff are so so friendly, you can tell it’s family run as it just oozes with that vibe. I will NEVER go to another cafe again, I’ve tried other local cafes, but they just don’t compare to the authentic, homemade goods you can get at the early bird. Just loved my visit today, and everyday, for now and forever 😆 💛 110% and 10/10 in every single aspect 🥰

Visited with my family for my daughters birthday breakfast. Firstly we were seated next to the front door which didn't close properly. It was freezing. We were moved when we requested. The food was fairly quick but my early bird breakfast was tepid in temperature I chose not say anything as it was my daughters birthday and didn't want to make a scene. Later on I asked my wife what she thought and her first comment was 'ok but cold' Shame. Can't see why freshly cooked breakfasts are cold.

Hi Thank you for your review. As we explained to you at the time we are currently waiting for a new shop front to be fitted (pushed back by Covid) and on the day you came the weather was particularly windy and yes the door did keep blowing open. We did apologise for this on numerous occasions and indeed moved you as soon as another table become available. Unfortunately as you didn’t tell us we were unaware that your food was ‘cold’. As we have an open plan kitchen you will have seen all our food is made fresh to order and served straight away. If you had brought it to our attention at the time we would have gladly rectified the situation with minimal fuss, sadly you didn’t give us the opportunity. We hope you will visit again in the future.
