Visited many times and as always food was delicious, staff very friendly and knowledgeable. This is the only restaurant I know where staff still wear mask and take temperature on arrival which I think is still necessary. Have booked again for visit in November.
We visited Yukisan on Saturday, a group of 10 of us to enjoy the amazing Japanese food whilst on our holiday in Plymouth. I chose this restaurant for us to go to based on the amazing reviews on the food and the staff, our experience...however didn’t meet up to these reviews.
As soon as we entered the restaurant the staff were so lovely, friendly and welcoming! The atmosphere was very cosy with dim lighting. The waitress took our temperatures then showed us to our table and took our drinks and food order very quickly, a great start to our experience.
Food started to arrive very quickly within 10 minutes of ordering. We ordered 4 x Katsu Curry’s with fried rice, 3 x Japanese curry’s with fried rice and 3 x chicken teriyaki, 1 with fried rice, 2 with steamed. As the curry’s came out, one of the dishes was brought out incorrectly, a Japanese curry with boiled rice instead of a katsu curry with fried rice, we asked the waitress to advise if the dish was the Japanese curry or a katsu curry and the waitress proceeded to say they were the same dish - they definitely were not and tasted completely different. If it was the same dish, there wouldn’t have been the two different options on the menu to choose from. We told the waitress it was the wrong meal and asked for it to be changed to a katsu curry with fried rice, without any hassle she took away the meal to replace with the correct dish. The chef came out to deliver the new dish to the table which we felt was such a lovely thing to do, the lady who’s meal it was was at the toilet. We waited for our friend to come back to the table, she tried the dish and it wasn’t correct and what she ordered. The sauce she was given was just a katsu sauce and not a katsu curry. The chef came out to see what the issue was, and proceeded to shout at my friend in the face saying “it’s the same sauce. You asked for a katsu sauce not a curry. Japanese curry and katsu curry are the same dish. I didn’t take your order the waitress did so I will go and get her” and stormed off to get the waitress, by this point we were absolutely shocked the way it was handled from the chef. After getting the menu to show which dish we ordered and went through how many of each meal we had ordered, the waitress brought out the katsu curry sauce. Whilst this was happening, we were also still waiting for 2 x steamed rice for the chicken teriyaki meals which we had to ask for 3 times. Eventually the steamed rice came out and we could finally enjoy our meals - the food is absolutely incredible and the portions are huge!!! Very filling and I’d definitely recommend it on the basis of the food!
We had all finished and were ready for the Bill. We asked for this and one of the girls went to speak to the lady on the desk to complain and make them aware of how the chef had spoke to our other friend at the table and that it was very uncomfortable, her response to the complaint was “what do you want me to do about it” - so poorly handled.
No one came over to take any more drinks orders whilst we were there, and the way our complaint was handled and the way the chef spoke to us was appalling so we wanted to do a reduced tip. One of the waiters asked a manager if this was possible, only for us to be greeted by the chef who stormed out of the kitchen to say “the tip isn’t for us it’s for the staff, if you don’t think it’s worth it and they didn’t do a good job then take it off the Bill” and stormed back into the kitchen.
I have worked in the hospitality industry for 10 years and have never experienced anything like this, we were so polite and in complete shock at how we were being treated that we just paid the Bill because we wanted to leave.
This restaurant needs to make their mind up if the Japanese curry is the same as the katsu curry - why have both on the menu at 2 different prices if they are the same. Read back the order to the table to make sure you have it down correctly to avoid issues like this and communicate with one another. Please don’t start to argue with customer when you’ve brought out the wrong dish 3 times and missed off items from other dishes which is no fault of the customer.
We were always going to leave a tip but didn’t feel that the 10% service charge we had to compulsorily pay was worth the service we received - this was around £30 because there was so many of us.
Treat the customers with some respect!
Would definitely recommend the restaurant for the food and atmosphere but the chef really needs to learn some manners. This really hindered and tainted our whole experience of this place.More
Absolutely delicious. Between us we tried so many dishes and they were all great. There was a lot more options than other Japanese restaurants I have been to. The set menu was very generous. The sushi was delicious. The bento box was filling and had...beautiful flavours. Really good!More
Started up 17 years ago. Located amongst a number of takeaways in not the most salubrious part of town, the sign out looks like it had seen better days - it took me a while before a I popped in! Inside, I am pleased to...report, the ambiance significantly improves.
I have had a few takeaway dishes which ranged for 'good' to 'have had better'. Disappointed by the amount of plastic used for the takeaway - other venues manage to use significantly more non-plastic alternatives.More
Had my first taste of yukisan today, not to be forgotten. Everything was delicious from the vegetable gyosa to the sesame ice cream.
We sat in the Japanese room upstairs where we were sat on the floor, the staff were so good and great at...recommending morsels to eat to someone new to proper Japanese dishes.
Will definitely be going again!More
This is hands down our favourite place to go! We haven't been in a long time now and miss it. Proper authentic Japanese cuisine. Excellent customer service. We always leave full and happy. Can't wait to return!
Food was v good, and efficient friendly service. Sushi was very nice, especially the maki. Beef skewers lovely, as was the monkfish. Green tea ice cream was a disappointment and the place needs a bit of an update as it’s a bit characterless. Kids loved...the chocolate puddings.More
