About
An Organic Inn - 8 bedrooms and a daily changing ingredient led menu. We are radical in what we do, offering sensible portions of the best ingredients we can source without compromising our core values. Never using airfreighted goods, we use whole animals and beautiful, genuinely seasonal fruit and veg. Lunch is small plates, so you can choose dishes that compliment or contrast. Our evening offer is a more traditional set up, offering starters, mains and puds. We have an amazing organic and natural wine list, and our bar is predominately organic with the addition of some amazing local beers.

There are so many great places to eat in Totnes, I am always anxious for new places, but this certainly holds its own. We had three different and excellent local ales and could have had several more. We wanted a light meal, so ordered the four kitchen snacks and a couple of starters, we got a delicious and exciting feast for two for £30. I would really recommend the perfect sourdough bread and dukkah, the sprouts, the ham, in fact everything was brilliant. I wish I had photographed it. It is perfect food for sharing and great for modern diets where you can eat a little meat if that's your thing or just loads of fun plant based dishes. The staff were friendly and helpful, giving a warm welcome, the decor is lovely and relaxed in parts, with some slightly jarring colour choices and dodgy looking paintwork, but it's clean and comfortable and with that food and beer, they can put me in a stable if they want. A lovely evening, thanks.

Have been looking forward to trying out the revamped "Bull". The atmosphere was nice and it had a good energy. The food was tasty and local (considerably overpriced) but it was let down mostly by the service. We waited 10 minutes before asking someone if we could get some drinks and this continued throughout the meal. You may expect this when you are paying £10 but not when you are paying £18 for a main without any side dishes. Definiely has potential but I wont be rushing back.

Second time eating here as we went for lunch and it was nice, thought we would try it again after hearing lots of mixed reviews - we are local. It starts with the staff, they are nice, but woefully undertrained and basically leave you to it, without explaining, offering or asking you anything. This went on all evening and seems to be a theme here- nobody in charge and clearly no training. The food was OK, my bavette steak was inedibly chewy and I had to get this taken off the bill, other courses were quite nice but nothing extraordinary at all. You'll feel quite ripped off, and if you are expecting food to 'riverford field kitchen' standard, you certainly wont be getting anything of that standard here. Feels like she enjoyed fitting the place out, handed it to some inexperienced staff and retired after that. The Cott is also streets ahead in all aspects. You can tell by the Cott being fully booked constantly, and just down the road.

we booked for lunch as a present for my husbands belated birthday. found it quite an unwelcoming place. eventually ordered and waited for around an hour to be served a plate of inedible venison with a free overcooked beetroots/shallots and some raddichio. i never complain but at £17.50 per plate i did complain. the waitress said it was because the knives were blunt and brought us some steak knives which did nothing to help the chewiness of the venison. we all left the meat. I asked to see the manager in the end and he was very pleasant. he offered us puddings or some small plates. we opted for the puddings. when it came to the bill he said there was nothing to pay. I was somewhat embarrassed and said we would pay for the one lager my husband had ordered and the puddings but he said no. as i said earlier i never complain and certainly did not do it for a free meal. i think the restaurant needs some serious upgrading both food wise and staff wise. all in all for us was a disappointing experience. also there was no track and trace system in operation either.

As a night away without the kids goes, our trip to the Bull Inn was outstanding. Styled perfectly, peaceful, quiet room with a huge double bed (we stayed in Room 4). The welcome negronis were a nice touch. There's a real community feel, we haven't got talking to so many strangers over drinks and dinner for ages, and Totnes is a great night out. The staff (shout out to Annabel and Philippa in particular) were friendly and welcoming and service was great. Range of beers, wines, coffee etc was thoughtfully chosen and everybody serving knew a lot about what they were serving, which was nice to see. Dinner was super, the pub was full and very buzzy, lovely lighting in the evening and a very mixed crowd. Kids and dogs were welcome. Delicious fresh bread, perfect vegetables (the broccoli starter was a stand-out, as was the focaccia and dukkah). Breakfast was a couple of choices of hot and healthy options, more freshly baked bread and just what you wanted - a bright, quiet atmosphere to ease you back to life. Honestly couldn't recommend it any more for a night away without the kids. We'll be back.

My family and I each enjoyed the organic kebabs we had at the weekend. We had the tofu/oyster mushroom and the beetroot/butternut fritters, and they were equally delicious! The ingredients were fresh and the bread was really tasty. I was shocked at the size of them! You certainly get a good portion for the money and four kebabs easily fed five of us, and this included three hungry teenagers! Would definitely recommend them and will certainly be back for more. Thanks!

Had such high hopes for this venue but I’m afraid it disappointed. Bleak, noisy interior with no comfort, character or warmth. If this was supposed to be rustic shabby chic... it was just shabby! The menu was very limited and failed to live up to expectations despite all sorts of self-conscious claims on the menu that everything was organic and locally sourced. What we wanted was good food, cooked with flair and expertise. Ended up with burnt cheese on toast a plate of mushy vegetables. And all for a very over optimistic price tag. Won’t be returning and won’t recommend

Had some good experiences here before, but Sunday evening 30 August was not one. Only three pies offered as mains, at £15 each. So I ordered the beef pie. A very small plate of beef and roast potatoes arrived accompanied by a small dish of vegetables. Not a pie at all. More like a miniature casserole. Ridiculously pathetic for the price. My partner had two starters as mains which were reasonable. Service was friendly from the waitress. But left a bad taste in my mouth, after the minuscule taste of the ‘pie’ had worn off. Felt I’d been ripped off.

We were looking forward to eating there as recently opened. The menu was limited to a choice of 4 mains which was lamb, pollock (the cheapest fish you can buy), gnocchi or a plate of beans!! The latter being £12.50 to £18 for the lamb, with side veg and potatoes (mash only) being extra at a whopping £4 per portion. They were very small portions too, come on it’s potato!! The food itself was average with both dishes we ordered, the lamb and pollock being overpoweringly salty. We skipped puddings. Whilst we don’t mind paying for good food, this was not in our opinion good value for money. One of our chairs, the seat had collapsed and my partner complained of arm ache from eating at chest height!! The noise accelerated and was very hard to hear. Sadly we won’t be coming back or recommending.

Visited with the family on a Saturday lunch time. Teenage daughter ordered the "chicken schnitzel" but asked for the onion puree and gribiche to be left off. Server suggested she could get her something else with it....broccoli was ordered thinking it was a nice gesture. She received a brown battered, dry chicken fillet (£23) and we were charged for the broccoli. £27 for an overcooked mcnugget and undercooked broccoli. If you're charging that kind of money make it somewhere near appropriate. Very disappointed.

Gave it a month or so to settle down and then gave it a try. I guess the fact we have been back twice tells it’s own story. The big attraction for us is the food which has always been piping hot and excellent quality. Prices are reasonable-ish ( think they may have increased by a couple of quid for mains recently) and reflect the quality of the ingredients. Service is great and they have New Lion Pandit. What’s not to like?

About the only good thing to say is that it has character. The food leaves a lot to be desired. We visited a Friday lunchtime, the place was busy. Food, we were told, was designed for sharing. I chose Honey glazed ham, sourcraute and apple sauce. Ham was dry and uninteresting, quantity, not even a snack. The wife chose Blue cheese tart and waldorf salad, very nice tasting but a very small portion. Total cost to include a pint of bitter for me, was over £18, Far to much for what we got. Will not visit again.

We were really looking forward to trying the Bull Inn but sadly it didn't live up to expectations. Our visit went down hill from from a curt bordering on rude welcome from the bar manager, a very limited menu and unattractive presentation. The menu was restricted to 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts and the lack of choice was complemented by uninspired presentation and less than generous portions. The pub has very little to recommend it and certainly doesn't live up to the write up in the Guardian.

We have eaten lunch at The Bull on several occasions and have always enjoyed our food, however today we were disappointed. The flavours were still good but the portion size, even for a small plate, was rather pathetic. we ordered crispy parsnips, £4.50 for about half a charred parsnip cut into tiny wedges and served with a mayonnaise dip. The crab toast was also disappointing, we ate this a few months ago and raved about it, so ordered it today in the hope of a repeat performance. Again, we were to be disappointed the portion size at £10 was very poor; a very small piece of toast heaped with about a tablespoon of crab and a garnish of raw celeriac. We expressed our disappointment to the staff at the till and received a rather aggressive response about rising costs and were told not to worry about it! We weren't worried, we were dissatisfied, frequent customers giving honest feedback. Whilst I do understand the difficulties facing the hospitality trade at the moment I don't like feeling ripped off! I was also concerned by the staff's attitude to COVID safety. Our server arrived at the table wearing a face mask, but then when taking our order, lowered her face mask and spoke with her face uncovered, standing very close to us. Sadly, I think it is very unlikely that we will return.

Our third trip to The Bull…food was good, tho not as good as previous visits….but service was really disappointing despite it being very quiet early evening. The waitress took ages to take our drink order and then had to come back 3 times to clarify what we’d ordered, what they did/don’t have and then what size we wanted. This was followed by being slow to take our food order which then took about 30 mins or so to arrive-about an hour from our arrival. I’m not convinced the highish prices (£70 for two for a glass of wine each, 2 mains & 2 sides) is justifiable with such slack service.
