We needed to be in Southbourne for a funeral. The Brewhouse & Kitchen was ideally situated between car park and church, so we dropped in for a quick beer and a sandwich beforehand. The welcome could not have been warmer, with the young lady behind the bar both friendly and helpful – as were the other customers. There was nothing wrong with the wide and recherché selection of beers. We ordered focaccia sandwiches with confidence, but she was then mortified to report that … the bread was not ready! It is a tribute to the pub’s relaxed ambience that we simply shrugged this off as a trivial setback and looked forward to the eventual wake instead. That, however, was later revealed to be misplaced optimism.
It is a truly cavernous pub that goes on back forever and, although the midweek, midday clientele was sparse, I expect that the joint is jumping at weekends. There appears to be a busy events schedule. It is unlikely that we will be back that way, but if we ever have to attend another family planting/grilling in Southbourne we will be more than happy to drop in again. It just felt like a good place to be, and was faaaaar more pleasant and enjoyable than what was to follow.

The service and pints are amazing!
This was my first time visiting this pub and I didn't know that most of the pints were brewed in their own brewery. The nice bartender Erinmay was very helpful in recommending the trilogy stout which was very lovely, and her Christmas themed Rudolph antlers made the experience feel festive, and to top it off i visited during 'hoppy hour' as she called it in which my pint was £4.95. I definitely left feeling the Christmas spirit as the decorations added to the wonderful atmosphere.

As someone who was visiting the area and have been to other brewhouses before. We were exited to try this one!
We were greeted and sat and our server introduced himself as Matt.
He told us the special and the in house beers / IPAs / lager and we asked him lots of questions and he was able to provide good knowledge and answers.
We went for a chicken burger and a few small plates, all arrived on time and tasty. Our server Matt, was very attentive and had a great smile!
Would come again

Waited 20 mins at the bar to buy a drink. Staff seemed oblivious to the people waiting at one side of the bar. Another customer walked around to the other side of the bar as he was fed up being ignored. Asked a waitress if we could place our food order, she said she would go fetch a machine, 40 mins later before she came back to take our order. We ordered some cheesy bread to nibble on whilst waiting for our dinner. The bread arrived with our meals, almost an hour later, and it was the wrong bread. My macaroni cheese was delicious, but the bread accompanying it was burnt black. My friend's meal was cold. We only ordered one dessert, but my friend said the cookie was rock hard. The restaurant area wasn't even extremely busy. No apologies for our long wait. Very disappointed with the service and the food so unfortunately we won't be eating here again.

I arrived at the brewhouse to have a meeting with colleague. I ordered a soft drink and went to sit down to wait for my friend to arrive. Once we decided what we were having for lunch and the drink that he was having. I went back to the bar to order my food and a drink. it seemed like the bartender was having a discussion with one of the managers and I patiently waited for a few minutes until eventually being served. Young man behind the bar took my order for a beer told me it was out of stock and offered me another in its place. I asked if I could order two fishfinger sandwiches to be told none of the daytime menu sandwiches were on offer. The chef was stood alongside him at the time, leaning on the bar and mumbled that the ingredients had now arrived and he hadn’t yet added them to the computer, which wouldn’t enable the staff member to sell them to me so I waited for a few minutes it seemed like a technical issue logging in the ingredients in order that they could then sell me a sandwich. I suggested that I’d go and sit back down. They poured the pint ordered the sandwich and put the payment through on the system I waited for another 15 minutes. Eventually I went back to the bar to find out what happened to the beer in the sandwiches to be told by the manager that the chap taking the order was now not working and had left without logging in the order. The pub was empty with probably four or five people in the entire place. The manager then took the order again and offered me the beer for free as an apology. The food arrived It was 80% greasy bread with a deep-fried piece of fish inside. Tasted like a greasy sandwich that had been fried off in an old chip fryer. The Wi-Fi took us 10 minutes to log on which was quite frustrating as this was seen to be advertised as a place you could do conduct a business lunch meeting in. I was tempted to not make a fuss about this, but considering the Wi-Fi asked for my email address and you have sent me an email. Consequently asking for my feedback. You can only blame yourself for this bad review to say when visiting Southbourne this pub will not be on my list of things to do for places to go.

Richard,
Thank you for bringing your experience to my attention. I'm Matt, the General Manager, I believe you may have spoken to my Assistant Manager on Monday lunch, who was working that shift as well. I'm sorry your expectations were no where near met, I can see a few things at fault here, all of which should be simple service steps.
Sometimes, the delivery of ingredients can arrive late and sadly this is mainly due to a shortage of truck drivers that the whole industry feels pressure from however, we could have done better to make sure we held a higher par level of the items that ran short that morning.
The bar staff member who took your order was clearly at fault for somehow not processing the final stage of the payment / order and for this I apologize. That is very out of character for him as he generally operates at a great level of pride and precision.
I am again sorry you disliked your sandwich. The bread is always home-made focaccia bread and this is made to rise quite a lot so it is designed to be a thicker sandwich. We do create this with olive oil and rosemary so I will feedback your opinion on that possibly making the bread greasy for you.
The WiFi issue seems strange as we didn't have any outage on our devices however I will log a call with our I.T department who may be able to see a technical issue that possibly arose on Monday.
Richard, I know this experience must had really quite affected your day as I have read the same review on other feedback sites and also read the email sent to our head office customer services. This is very rare for someone to have this level of reaction and clearly we must get better at doing the simple things at the quietest times of the week. By all means, do pop in if you would like to chat further in person and I would be happy to share a beer with you and listen. Kind regards, matt E - GM

We arrived to the pub at 7pm and sat down to then be told we can’t order however in 10 minutes we will be able to. We waited about 20 minutes and went back to the guy we originally spoke to and politely asked if we can order he again said it will be longer in a rude tone. We proceeded to wait for over an hour. Then finally we got told we can order. So we ordered and have now been waiting 1hour since ordering. My side came now however was cold and we got told everything gonna be coming out separately which defeats the whole point as we ordered a meal to enjoy together. I am really unhappy with this experience and was not once offered a partial refund or a drink/ desserts on the house. Which o believe would have been fair after waited hours.

Booked a table for two for a Sunday roast dinner at 6, place was empty except for some customers watching the football.
The service was painfully slow and that was just getting to the table, we told just to go and choose any table which we did only to be abandoned there for 15 mins.
Even watched some staff watching the football
Still it gave us time to rebook to a proper restaurant.
Such a shame.

Came in last night and queues at the bar were ridiculous. This is usual at this time of the year and always have extra patience with bar staff, however the staff were serving random people who walked straight in (assuming friends) and there were groups of us who had been waiting 20+ minutes.
There were also staff behind the bar not serving, just chatting to friends and staff/manager that was there on their night off (assuming this as one kept popping behind the bar and grabbing own drinks)
A large group of us arrived and we just gave up in the end and went elsewhere, which was even busier but we got served in 5 mins as they were properly staffed/trained.
This isn’t the first time this has happened in here hence the review. This is Usually a great pub for food, quizzes and atmosphere, the beer is great… but avoid on a Fri/sat night (unless you want a ridiculous wait) as the bar is never properly staffed.

Hi Amy
Thanks for your feedback and apologies for the extended wait at the bar. I was on shift all of the Friday and Saturday nights recently and can empathise that we have been pretty much at capacity for functions, drinkers and diners all month. December is also a month where we need to try hard to balance the personal needs of the team and the requirements of the business but without going over the top with short-term employment just for Christmas. Not easy but we try our best. Also, you would have seen me a number of times pour drinks behind the bar and walk away however these were all for dispense into the booked restaurant seats or customers who ordered on the QR code app for table service. I take a lead in managing that so I can assist the bar team but also stay quite mobile on the floor and speak to as many customers as possible. Alas, they were not for me or my friends... I wish! Anyway, thanks for the kind words on the business, food and events outside of peak bar service times. We hope you have a safe new year and see you in 2024. Matt E - GM

A lot of the menu was not available apparently due to ‘big buffets’ which we were not told when we were seated so we were disappointed when ordering as they didn’t have most of the dishes we wanted. Food order came out wrong with one dish being sent back and a mess up in the kitchen meaning one of us had to wait until everyone had almost finished to receive theirs. Food was mediocre at best and service was non-existent. With so many great places to eat on the high street, we won’t be returning for food any time soon!!!

Went for a nice meal with a friend at brew house this evening and the service was terrible! We had to ask a member of staff to be seated after waiting for 5-10 minutes, bare in mind there were only two small tables seated in the restaurant and two visible members of staff in the area not appearing to do much! At first the service was okay but after being given our food, which was mediocre at best, we were not seen by a member of staff again! My fries were mostly all burnt and drinks were finished by the time the food arrived but we were never asked how it was or if anything was needed. It was not until 40 minutes after finishing that we asked the apparent manager where the staff were and explained our upset. He (Guss) only cared that they were understaffed all day,( which we appreciate as we run a cafe of our own and understand it is stressful), but in actual fact the place was dead barely any people at all and frankly it is rude and unacceptable. No real apology was made and we will not be returning again. I would like to highlight when relaying our upset again to the member of staff in the bar tonight ( young man name unsure) he was very understanding and promised to relay this message to another/ higher colleague or manager at the earliest convenience they are in- though that is likely untrue I really appreciated his demeanour as he had a much better approach to the situation. Very appalled and very disappointed.

REALLY slow & food was terrible!
I had curry wurst and a side of chip - small portions & expensive for what it was (£3.50 for a handful of chip).
My partner had the burger, it was burnt and again small portion for the £12.95 price tag.
It took over an hour for the food to come then & nobody came to check how our food was so weren’t able to report it.
Won’t eat here again but would come back for a drink.

Recently had lunch at the Brewhouse in Southbourne which is now under new management. Got to spend some time with Matt the new general manager who is a great guy with so much experience in the industry. He is a real community man and is already making some great improvements and changes!
Lunch was really enjoyable with Beer B Cue Pork Carnitas to start with, followed by a juicy 10oz Ribeye Steak with garlic butter, chunky fries, and a tasty salad all cooked and presented really well and washed down with a lovely pint of cider! Great pub and would highly recommend!

I live a couple of minutes from the brewhouse but after having a terrible meal couple of years ago with my mum I have stayed clear since.
Tonight friends of mine who I haven't seen for many years came down so decided to meet there as it was a good meeting point. I actually said to my friend I would rather go elsewhere due to my previous experience but as it was so long ago decided to give you guys another chance.
Good things - Staff very friendly and attentive, not to long at the bar for drinks. We're able to keep our table all night after checking with staff. Accommodated my dog.
Bad things - Two of us ordered the beef bourguignon at £14.95 per head as per the menu describes it says it comes with onions, mustard mash. It Did not come with onions, not much sauce and no mustard mash as described. The worst part was they were both stone cold.
The staff were very sorry and took both meals to replace them but honestly would rather have had them warmed up as our third friend had now eaten her meal by the time we got our new dishes back. In addition I had ordered some garlic and lemon broccoli which wasn't replaced and as I knew it would be cold by the time we had our dishes back so we had to eat this on its own.
What was also a little bit disappointing was that when I passed a table on the way to the toilet I saw someone else's beef bourguignon and there's was covered in onions.
I feel like the brewhouse is not offering things to the standard that is on the menu missing items and meals going out not to the same standard each time.
I appreciate the staff offering to replace the meals but surely getting the meal hot before it leaves the kitchen and supplying it with what it is advised in the first instance is just going to be easier.
We were offered as a complimentary drink which was thoughtful but honestly the whole experience for me was ruined and I will never be eating here again.
Lastly from picture attached this is more like a beef brisket with mash and veg not a beef bourguignon.
Thank you brewhouse but I really believe you need to sort it out.

Thanks for taking the time to leave us your feedback, I'm glad the team were able to look after you so well. Sorry you didn't enjoy you meals, I've passed your feedback onto the kitchen team so my head chef can do some retraining with his team and make sure things such as this do not reoccur. The Bourguignon is made with a feather blade cut of meat, not the traditional stewing beef. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. We really appreciate your feedback.

Excellent evening. Iva, our hostess was extremely knowledgeable and made the whole experience interesting and enjoyable. 5 different Gins to try with lots of additions and mixers. Plus a double measure of your particular favourite, Pothecary for 3 of us and Bathtub for the other
The price also included a bar meal. The whole experience was great fun, informative and great value for money
