We were visiting Sherborne for the first time, it was a cold wet and windy day, every cafe in the high street was full to overflowing, we were about to give up and go back to the car when a little way from the main drag, we chanced upon this little gem, really quirky concept of secondhand books piled up... Popped in here for a coffee and cake. Selection of homemade cakes. Good coffee. It is certainly different from your normal coffee shops.

Sherborne is full of coffee shops, but in my opinion this one beats the lot. For a start, they use top-quality coffee beans from an established Dorset supplier who I've bought my beans from in the past. But it's not just the coffee and the food. I'm there at least twice a week for the atmosphere as well. Maybe it's... More

The place could do very well, but they do not know how to make coffee - watery/weak. The thing is, at a couple of pounds, coffee is not cheap and is always enjoyed at a special moment, which generally happens once a day. So, it really is not good to make weak coffee. Improve your coffee, and you'll do better.

I'm sorry to hear that your experience with our coffee was not up to scratch. You are one of the first to say the coffee is watery/weak, I will check the grinder settings in the morning as this should not have happened. The blend we use is roasted in Dorset and is most normally praised by customers. Please, if this... More

What a wonderful find for book lovers, those who enjoy a peaceful drink/light refreshments away from the hubub of the town, or who just want to sit with a drink and look at the enormous array of books! PERFECT, and Claire the owner and her staff are so friendly!

To find a "proper " seacond hand book shop is a joy and then to find it also has a tearoom made a great start to a holiday in Dorset. Sitting drinking tea and eating Dorset apple cake surrounded by piles of books is our "cup of tea" but might not be to everyone's taste (they don't know what they're... More

This place could be a real gem but four of us visited for lunch and it was memorable for the wrong reasons. The prices were very reasonable, the menu was quite appealing but the service was abysmal. There were other customers but it could hardly be considered busy and the options offered weren't exactly difficult to produce or so you'd... More

I'm sorry to hear you had an unsatisfactory visit to us recently, we aim not to disappoint customers, obviously we failed in your case. Please accept my apologies. I just want to reassure you that the coffee shop staff are issued with disposable gloves to use when handling food, which are removed when taking orders or payment. More

This cafe is at the 'rear' of a second hand bookshop. It is small with quite a few tables and they serve very nice homemade cakes - the most enormous slices. I wish it was more comfortable though, the slightly damp smell of second hand books pervade and the chairs are not designed for long term sitting / reading.

I want to keep this place all to myself! The Sanctuary is a hidden gem at the rear of a Harry Potter type bookshop! The coffee is excellent, the cheese scone fresh and tasty. Service spot on with a smile.
