Many places these days either cater for the masses or for those with more money than sense. With the former you get burgers with frozen chips and the latter a tasting menu leaving your stomach and wallet empty. The Black Swan caters for those of us who like home cooked food when we are away and does it very well. Booking in advance is often a gamble, but at the moment is a necessity, as it is a place that gets booked up quickly. The gamble payed off as the food was as delicious as the menu was tempting. We wished we had booked for a second night as there were plenty of dishes to tempt. We both had, what other French bistros would have called Boeuf Bourgignon and charged fortune for, here was humbly called beef stew. Paired with dauphinoise potatoes it was delicious. My only criticism was the mixed vegetables on the side which could have been so much nicer if they had been fresh.

My sister and I called with 30 minutes notice that we would like a table reserved for 1pm on a hot busy sunday, along with my 3 year old daughter. They were extremely accomading, and helpful, and had us seated straight away. Service is quick, and effeciant, and you have everything you need from the get go. the food needs a review of its own, because absolutely outstanding does not justify our meal. we had a beautful meal, with desserts and every bite was delicious. Will 100% be going again, for an all round great afternoon!

I took the children to the Black Swan for a Sunday lunch treat and we all loved our roast dinners. Pre-booking a must on a Sunday as quite rightly fully booked due to exception quality there is high demand. Best roast I’ve had in a long time. Thank you

9 of us for a Friday evening over two tables, following social distance rules, were very well looked after and with nearly all of us having something different off the menu nobody was disappointed. Starters, mains and desserts all hit the spot with a good value wine choice too. The Black Swan rarely disappoints.

Went here twice over one wet January weekend - Friday night and Sunday lunch. Place was packed and for a reason: the food is excellent and the table service is highly attentive. The chef is remarkable and quite the storyteller at the end of each service as he wanders around talking to guests. This place is full of character, and very telling: full of locals too. They know great food at good prices as much as any tourist. There are more centrally locates pubs than this but the very short walk is handsomely rewarded. Dogs welcome and very well looked after too.

We pre-booked The Black Swan on the recommendation of our B&B and was glad that we did as it’s clearly a popular place. Overhearing a local, they have removed many of the tables inside for social distancing. Whereas I appreciate what they’ve done, there were only about for tables in the area where we were dining and the two of us were strangely seated on a table for 6, so the atmosphere was a little bit lacking. We shared mussels to start which were lovely and a generous portion. I went for the fillet steak for main which I ordered blue. The chef visited our table to check that I really really did want it blue. Yes please! I always order blue steak in a restaurant as it invariably comes rare as blue steak is difficult to cook. It came rare! It came in a delicious but almost too rich sauce, and there was plenty of it. My husband enjoyed his fish pie. The chef came out at the end to check on the steak and I commented that I could have taken it more blue. He said that he “wanted to be sure”. Although I appreciated the attentiveness, I found his whole attitude a little obnoxious and arrogant if I’m honest. Hence docking a star. I would recommend The Black Swan and recommend it. It just wasn’t the most amazing meal of the holiday.

Dear lovetotravel13337, Thank you for taking the time to review the Black Swan along with several other establishments that you happened upon during your recent visit to Swanage. I was sorry to hear that you felt it strange to be seated as a couple on a table suitable for six people. We take our bookings on a first come first serve basis so from time to time our guests may find themselves seated on a larger table than they require, most people enjoy the luxury of having the space. You mentioned that this affected the atmosphere of your experience, but I suppose atmosphere is very much down to the company that you keep. We chose not to be mercenary about taking bookings even in these times where we as a business have lost a total of 27 seats across the whole building, the vast majority of our customers are grateful that we are open, thriving and pleased to be accommodated. I was pleased to hear that you enjoyed your mussels, this dish is one of our favourites too. You also comment about your “blue” steak, our chef and co – owner did visit your table to ensure that this was truly what you wanted, “blue” indeed, in a restaurant or in fact in PUB you were sitting in, uncomfortably on your table suitable for six. The sauce is rich, which is why it comes on the side so that you can add it to your taste. We are glad that you appreciated the chef and co – owners attentiveness, however we are disappointed as to why you feel need to point out that you found his manner “obnoxious and arrogant” and dock us one whole star. Eric spoke to you as he does hundreds of other guests every week to ensure they enjoy their experience and his food, not all of them a couple sat on a table suitable for six clearly. I have taken the time to speak to all of my team who were present during your visit to ensure that all your experience was delivered as it ought to be and second to none they were all appalled by the attitude that you present in your review. Thank you for saying that you would recommend us in the future, but perhaps you were not the most amazing customer we’ve come across this holiday. The Black Swan

Poor quality food and bad attitude from management. This place is so overrated Needless to say dire eating experience recently where the bigoted (aptly described by previous customers) manager (aka owner) told us very blatantly the grey looking reformed fish "wholetail scampi" they dished up for me is apparently "Michelin Star " and of the highest quality whatever it was it was definitely NOT wholetail scampi as they advertise on their menu.. The evening started off by us ordering a bottle of Moet Chandon (special occasion). Ten mins later the "manager" comes out to say "we don't have, will Tattinger do?". a bit taken aback asTattinger not on the menu but we agreed to that. I took a few moments to mull it over to which the manager, clearly agitated by my delayed response, said "does it really matter?" our table was stunned at this comment, then the manager changesmd his stance and said "we might have a bottle of Moet but he will need to check another fridge". clearly he could not be bothered to check prior. so after now agreeing to a bottle of Tattinger, a few minutes later he delivered a pre opened bottle of Moet (bad etiquette not to open champagne directly in front of guests) but quite honestly this typifies the arrogant manager attitude and his clear lack of professional experience. The food overall was on par to a Wetherspoons. My husband's starter was a tiny portion of poor grade whitebait with a very wilted salad. The menu advertises "wholetail scampi" but it is not. opening the breaded casings revealed an unpleasant grey matter of what looked like reformed fish. Having shown the chef and management they stood over us masked up and hands folded inferring we were idiots. Apology is not in their vocab. Always an indication of poor management. Having eaten at this establishment on a number of occasions prior to our last visit, the manager (owner) has always been rude to me. On another occasion, my friend and I asked for a 23020 bottle of white wine (bear in mind the wines here are overpriced and poor quality). At the same time i requested a large bottle of sparkling water to which the manager responded "What vintage would madam like?" Avoid this overrated, and overpriced place. The manager need replacing with professionals.

Thank you for taking the time to review The Black Swan. We are clearly not the place for you to enjoy your nights out or your special occasions. The events of the evening are very much subjective. We would like to say that following your comments and rudeness to all of our team and after your refusal to pay for your entire bill the police were called and you were all barred from the premises. Thankfully you did settle the bill (minus the scampi) and the police did not have to attend. We stand by our offering and believe that your expectations of a plate of food that is advertised at a price of £9.95 is clearly higher than what is reasonable. Our wine list is more than reasonably priced and it is more than fair to ask for £45 for a bottle of Moët & Chandon. We truly hope that you are able to find an establishment locally that will be able to meet your exacting expectations. Eric & Darren aka “FRENCH CHEF” & Sarcastic Manager

We booked to eat at The Black Swan Inn on our holiday trip to Swanage. This place is a very welcoming cosy Inn offering amazing tasty food. We would totally recommend eating here, the atmosphere is lovely & the Inn staff were really accommodating for dietary needs. The dishes we ordered were really wholesome & we can honestly say each of our meals were outstanding & priced very reasonably. The fish pie was the best I have ever eaten anywhere ever. Thank you so much for an amazing experience. The proof is in my photo.

It's easy to see why this place is the busiest pub restaurant in Swanage. Tucked away from the much busier high street, it's a real gem for the local area. We managed to get a booking on Thursday evening at 5pm which suited us with our 4 year old. We had to sit outside but despite the gloomy weather, the outside area is well covered, clean and with heating. The service, first of all, is great. Really attentive and friendly and we were really well looked after. The food, however, is really where this place shines. It was superb. We all had different meals, and everything was so nice. Fresh, well cooked and well presented. We didn't leave anything! Cost was around £60 for 4 of us (1 child) and we all had 2 courses and drinks. Very reasonable and highly recommended!

Came across the Black Swan whilst visiting Swanage on our Dorset holiday. It's a nice pub, with great outdoor seating, clean and Covid safe. Food was mostly good at reasonable prices and I liked the amount of gluten free choices, which I often struggle with when going out for a meal! My only complaint is that my partner and I both ordered side vegetables with our meal and what came out definitely did not match the quality of the rest of the food. I can only describe it as overcooked, what looked like, frozen packet peas, carrot and sweetcorn swimming in butter. Very rarely do I leave vegetables, but they were inedible. When we mentioned this to them, the chef simply explained they were cooked Fricasse (French style). As people who like decent, al-dente fresh veg, all I can say is that I won't be ordering sides if we ever visit France! To their credit, they removed one portion of the veg from our final bill at least. On a more positive note, the sticky toffee pudding was divine! Worth a visit.

We decided last minute to visit, as we were staying locally. Booking ahead still but on the day meant we dined outside and the weather was great. Tables were well spaced and the welcome on arrival was friendly. We were invited to take photos of the extensive specials boards inside and shown to our table. Service of drinks was swift and we were given time to browse the menu. Staff were polite, efficient and wore masks throughout. The choice of food from starters to desserts was superb. All the meals I saw being served to tables looked fantastic, making it a tough choice!! We opted to share a baked camembert to start, with fish pie and a chicken and king prawn Caribbean jerk dish. Both were of a really high standard for average pub prices. Portion size was just right, leaving enough room to share a meringue nest dessert. In total along with 2 drinks each we spent less than £60. Great value. Access to the garden might challenging for those who struggle with steps. Otherwise we felt we stumbled across a proper jewel on the edge of Swanage town centre and would happily go back.

What a find! Booked a table, had to eat early at 6pm as they were nearly full, we only decided to eat there that afternoon. Fabulous varied menu and very reasonably priced. We both had chorizo and baby octopus to start, I would of had another as my desert if I hadn’t been full! For my main I had the venison haunch, dauphinois and veg, again delicious and all generous portions. My little dog was also allowed in, an added bonus. Every member of staff was great. Good social distancing, a safe environment

Just had a meal here as we have done for many years, as they have previously been excellent. But I was disappointed on this occasion not only with my meal but the reaction to the concern I raised. I requested vegetables with my fish pie and was presented with frozen mixed vegetables swimming in butter. On raising this later I was told I should have said something earlier but; 1.some people feel intimidated when asked how the meal is as you are eating and 2.if I had complained would I have got fresh veg, as I have had previously and if so why not on my original request for vegetables? A shame that a resteraunt that knows it has a good reputation should dismiss an honest opinion from a well meaning and regular holiday visitor. My husband's meal was good so I am not dismissive of their culinary skills, but I am of the after care of well meaning paying customers.

Last minute, we managed to get a table for 2 for an unexpected childless evening. Magnificent. Not only the child free night but the service and quality of this establishment. The food was delicious and piping hot, the surroundings were idyllic and the service was rapid and polite. Thank you for squeezing us in. Unfortunately we didn’t have room for dessert... Thanks very much. Regards, Table 20
