Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent seafood, obviously, that's what it advertises and sells. We both had the catch of the day, and it was brill and huge, this is not a sardine. We foolishly ordered a side each and shared salad. I was somewhat embarrassed, because it is a...very classy place, to ask for a doggy bag - I was not wasting that fish. However, the staff were not phased and were happy to oblige. I had salmon tartar and my husband had oysters to start - simply divine. It is not cheap but you get what you pay for and we have payed more for rubbish food in other places.More

Visiting Brighton I decided to treat my friend to some oysters. We ordered from the blackboard in the window. We decided on 6 natives and 2 bloody Mary's, which we believed were going to be £6 each. It transpired that I had misread it and...the advertised drinks were just shots. However the bar tender didn't ask me if I wanted shots or full cocktails. We sat at the bar but were then requested to move further down the bar to stools in front of the coat rack. Of course the inevitable happened and the waitress asked us to stand up so she could get some coats from the rack. When the bill arrived it was over £60, including a service charge of over £8. We sat at the bar so service was minimal. When I asked for a refund on the service charge I was only given back £6 because apparently the rest had suddenly become VAT. The waitress, whose only interaction with us had been to ask us to stand, made her displeasure obvious by banging a tray down on the counter. I can only presume that the staff aren't very well paid and have to rely on the service charge. In conclusion, make sure you read the menu carefully and beware of extra charges. There are a lot of better seafood restaurants in Brighton that offer much better value.More

We had the best time at English's on Sat. The food was excellent, fresh, well cooked and well presented, and the staff warm and welcoming, adding to the already wonderful family feel of the place and making the evening very enjoyable indeed. Nothing was too...much trouble. A special thanks goes to Manu, who was an invaluable help in the run up to the dinner and during, together with the lovely young lady who served us all evening with a smile. Thank you!More

Very lovely staff! Polite and attentive. Mackerel patè appetiser was divine, we ordered more ! Moules Mariniere was a great hit , frites delicious. We would definitely return to eat when in the area . My only criticism was the lack of background music !...Nicer to have a private conversation rather than feeling you can't.More

My wife and I visited English's for a dinner. You are served a small bread roll and a small portion of fish pate to start. My wife likes Oysters so decided to order herself half a dozen before the starter and main course. I asked...if I could have an additional bread roll whilst my wife consumed her Oysters and this was granted. We were then served our starters and main course which were fabulous. We both finished with a dessert and asked for the bill. To my horror they had charged £1.35 for the additional bread roll. Bearing in mind this was a +£200 bill and I am not hard up for £1.35, I just found it so penny pinching. Bear in mind there is also a £2.50 cover charge per head + 12.5% service charge (the £2.50 also gets charged the 12.5%). The waitress agreed to remove the fee for the bread roll and an after dinner drink as an apology. We accepted the charge to be removed but declined the nightcap as the damage was done. Do not misunderstand because this is a lovely restaurant and excellent food but the penny pinching for the extra bread roll just ruined the experience for me. I would have given them a score of 5 but downgraded to a 4More

I feel compelled to post a review for Brighton's oldest fish restaurant, after an exceptional impromptu supper. We started with half a dozen delicious native oysters served on ice, followed by a superb fish and chips. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. Really enjoyed...their wine recommendation. The table setting, starched table cloth and serviettes etc and general ambience made for a real treat. Thankyou!More

We booked a table online and received a warm welcome on arrival. This is a proper old-fashioned seafood restaurant, well presented and clean with a crisp white tablecloth on the tables. Came here with my wife to celebrate my recent retirement. It's a place close to my heart with many great memories and it certainly hasn't changed which is all positive. Old fashioned service, greeted at door, coats taken, seated promptly and very friendly, not often...found these days. Already knew what we wanted, scallops and lobster thermidor, which were cooked to perfection and served hot. Very attentive service without being hurried.Obvoius to see how this well established restaurant has stood the test of time after many many years of family ownership, many thanks.More

We have eaten at English's many times over the years but this week they demonstrated that they still deliver simply outstanding dining. Our family party of four were greeted warmly and courteously at the door, our coats taken and, without prompting, shown to the window...table we had requested. Their service belongs to a bygone era - respectful, professional, discreet and efficient. We ordered a bottle of house white (well-chilled Chardonnay) which was perfect with the day's special of lobster, crab and tagleatteli topped with crispt baby squid. Two of us had the special and two chose the terrific hot sharing seafood platter which they only just managed to finish. Both dishes were oustanding in presentation, flavour and sheer enjoyment. A really enjoyable and memorable lunch, one that we shall be repeating as soon as possible.More
