Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What's happened to this place? Had meals here lots of times. Ordered fish and chips this evening and genuinely thought they had given me a half portion. The likeable barman was embarrassed to serve it, went back to check with the chef and told us...that it was actually the intended portion, so the barman gave us a complimentary drink as an apology. All not helped by the 10% service charge not mentioned on the menu (so fish and chips - a child's portion was £17.60). I loved this pub but won't eat there again. HARVEY'S - We all know pubs are struggling these days. I want to support you. But that meal was really taking the piss. I have been planning to bring a group of friends to Lewes to tour the great pubs. My plan was to book a table for lunch at the JHT. If they'd been served that meal I'd have felt humiliated - and it would wreck the Harvey's reputation.More

I would like to say what wonderful service we had from Lexie and the team. They were super busy with 2 or 3 other big groups but still managed to give us (a group of !0) an attentive, cheery and personal service. Well done! Thank...you for making it a lovely evening. And the food was good!More

This seemed a great, busy, friendly pub and my partner was in seventh heaven as he loves Harvey's beer! We had a very tasty lunch, but our disappointment was mainly due to the portion sizes. People were tucking into their meals as we were choosing...what to order, and my partner noticed the ham, egg and chips someone was eating and really fancied it. I went for fish and chips. We noticed the menu said you could have 2 courses for £20, which was a saving of a couple of pounds if you ordered starters separately. We hadn't really intended to have starters, but because this was writ large on the front of the menu, we decided to. Big mistake. The starters were ok. They took a while, but the pub was busy. Our main courses also took a while, but when they arrived the waiter told us not to worry but because we'd ordered from the 2 courses for £20 our portion sizes were smaller and was that ok. I think we were too bemused to say anything. My piece of battered fish was small, and my partner had half the ham and eggs seen on other customers plates. It tasted good, but we felt robbed and left the pub feeling a little disappointed. There was no mention of reduced portion size either on the menu, or when we ordered. I did mention our disappointment to one of the bar staff, and I hope she passed it on. When we first arrived in the pub we thought we'd definitely be returning, but now I'm not so keen. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186275-d2394385-r935687381-John_Harvey_Tavern-Lewes_East_Sussex_England.html#More

A very good venue. Staff very helpful. Lex in particular was most helpful and very knowledgeable. She went out of her way to keep my boss happy, which is very difficult and she absolutely loved her.

We had prebooked because it was just prior to Christmas and to secure a table downstairs. People were turned away who wanted to eat during our visit. We all had a ciabatta with fries and a drink. We had prawn, prawn & avocado and 2...x sausage. All very good, generous fillings and very tasty fries. Highly recommended when in the area. Located close to the actual brewery and the brewery shop - makes for a nice trip.More

Very disappointed that they tried to overcharge us twice (by £80+ both times) today. The first time I queried the bill they told me someone had added 2 bottles of merlot to our bill in error and they would take that off. They gave me...a revised bill but the calculations were again completely wrong and still trying to overcharge by £80+. I asked my colleagues to double check the revised bill they also confirmed the bill was still overcharged by about £80 so I queried again and eventually after traipsing back upstairs to another till, we got to the correct amount. I wish I had copied the amended bill which clearly shows the incorrect amount charged. Be very wary and double check any bill calculations with a calculator. We won’t be going there again!More

My husband and I always know that a real Sunday roast is a John Harvey Tavern roast. Today we chose our favourite being the classic beef and it was cooked to perfection alongside crispy cooked vegetables and delicious roast potatoes. A big thank you to...the lovely landlady and her staff, a jolly super job.More

The worst food I have ever seen and tried to eat. Harvey’s should be ashamed to be associated with a kitchen this bad. Bar staff and beer great

What happened to this place? Food use to be great the super generous portions. Today we waited 40 minutes for our food, and the wait really wasn’t worth it. Uncooked chips, very measly portions and hugely overpriced, bill came to £140 for 6 adults. They...even forgot my sisters order of bangers and mash so we had to wait for that to arrive which eventually was also rank. Give this place a miss.More

Came here as a group for lunch- enjoyed some nice Harveys drinks- old, best & pilsner. Food was ok- had crunchy calamari, ok burger & nice Bakewell tart. Food service however was awful- barmen took orders from across the room, was rude, service slow, plates...wasn’t cleared and cutlery & sauces only brought out on request. Recommended for a drink out in Lewes however.More
