WOW We love our monthly date day and like to try somewhere new. having no real plans on what we would have, we found the Malt and Anchor. no booking, but they got us in. the place was immaculately clean. Didn't have to wait for...the cuppa to arrive and we ordered haddock, chips and peas. what at delight we were in for. Waited for the meal to be cooked fresh and wow. not greasy, crispy batter and proper mushy peas. Served by Dan and a delight. we will be back,.More
Daniel, Thankyou for such a lovely welcome and going there extra mile to find us a seat even though we hadn’t booked ahead. The food was exceptional and the wine went down a treat. A great place, would highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back.
Excellent lunchtime meal from an amazingly varied menu including the specials board . Olivia served us superbly. I tried a triple of the small platters just to get a taste. My Wife went straight in for,the double cooked chips and loin of cod, skinless ,...in a fine batter. My prawns , squid and calamari were delicately cooked , very render , not chewy and came with some lovely fried seaweed. Premises are licensed too. A good experience of fine dining at reasonable prices in comfortable surroundings.More
A lovely warm welcome when we arrived. Food came reasonably fast. We ordered cod loins with chips. The whole meal was superb.Lovely white fish cooked to perfection and the chips were amazing.I was a bit shocked at the price of £39 as we thought the...meal was a fair bit less. We must have made a mistake, but we were happy to pay it as a special treat.More
This was our Fifth or sixth visit here and it never disappoints. My sister had cod which she said was great and she even liked the mushey peas, which she doesn't normally enjoy. I had the scampi also fab. Chips are always good too. Staff...are always friendly and helpful, we were served today by Olivia, she was efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. Not overly priced and never have to wait too long either. Great place, please never change. Until next time 😁More
First visit here . Basic fish and chips. Nothing special. Expected more after reading the good reviews. Curry sauce was very gloopy Quite expensive for what you get I thought
Food was incredible, found the portion sizes to be ideal. Service was very good - we were welcomed by Jade and she was very attentive all evening and provided great, friendly service! 5 star experience!
Overall fish and chips were good! Plates are very small so fish was sat in top of the chips! When we moved the fish to the side of the plate, the chips in the middle was sitting in a pool of oil! … was this...because we ordered our fish with beer batter? So the batter was very thick. All our sides were fine except the onion rings 3.5 onion rings for £6:50, with very little onion in any of themMore
Second time lunch visit again table booked in advance just as well as extremely busy very pleasant young lady greeted and seated us and took our order approximately twenty minutes wait for the food to appear my wife had the mussels in cider and bacon...which she said was very good i had the large loin with chips and mushy peas unfortunately the portion size of the cod left a lot to be desired i would liken it to a fillet of plaice in respect of actual fish flake size and the portion of mushy peas would not have filled a teaspoon and I find the prices of drinks to be a bit of a rip off.I come from a seaside east coast town and spent time working in a fish and chip shop so I do know something about the industry and sorry to say this establishment would probably not survive in any seaside resort despite all the reviews and accolades,As another reviewer said there are better places around try the watermoor takeaway for example you don't have to go to Whitby for good fish and chipsMore
We have eaten here several times over the years to give them the benefit of the doubt. No more! I genuinely do not understand why Malt & Anchor generate all the accolades they do. The fish portions are meagre, coated in an average batter. Even...when you spend a little more for loin, this is equally unimpressive and all for the price of a small mortgage deposit. The chips are substandard, and it's all quite frankly disappointing. I can only imagine that the people reviewing their products don't have enough experience of what constitutes good fish & chips. For goodness sake, go to Magpie in Yorkshire, the mighty Seafarers in Lytham, Squires in Devon. And hundreds of others that I've sampled over the years. Then you'll know what proper fish and chips are. Perhaps people just like to follow the crowd, think they're part of a trend by leaving good reviews. But, please, consider going elsewhere for your fish & chips. Money is tight for the majority right now. Don't be fooled by the hype. It really incenses me.More
Amazing!!! First time here today and honestly best food ever my little boy absolutely loved his and so did we!! Visited after seeing that they were in the top 10 in the uk, could not recommend enough, the portions are perfect and you definitely get what you pay for. Had a lovely chat with our waitress Olivia about their craft beers, we loved them so...much that we purchased some to give to friends as gifts. Will be back. Good luck in the awards malt and anchorMore
Went here for a spot of dinner with my mum and it did not disappoint one bit! Fresh fish, crunchy but fluffy chips and lovely selection on drinks on offer. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend this unique little restaurant. Noticed...when leaving they also do deliveries and takeaway!!! Definitely coming back!More
This spot is the best fish and chips in town. Nice calm atmosphere, we had a couple of cocktails, and enjoyed the prawn & calamari starter than the classic fish and chips as mains. Previously I have opted for their specials as they are always...outstanding and always something new. Great service from Milly, attentive & chatty. Looking forward to being back in the area to enjoy again soon.More
