This COULD be an excellent restaurant…however…tables were very close together, low ceilings - hence quite noisy, their ‘full selection’ of wines were ‘not available’ on the evening we were there. Staff were OK…seemed to be way too busy to make small talk and to form...a rapport with the diners. Starters of calamari and ham hock were good followed by mains of rump steak and salmon…also good. We were also given a 1.5 hour maximum limit to dine and to be ‘out’…. I appreciate the need to get good throughput of covers…but to be told that we need to leave within 1.5 hours of arriving … seemed a little ‘off’.More

Despite the very nice place in which the pub sits we were very disappointed. We were there on a Sunday. We order the roasted lamb and the roasted porc as well as a vegetarian dish. The meal did not have any taste and was not...even hot.More

My friend and I used to be regular customers at the Lion and our visit today was our first for over two years. When we saw the improved covered seating areas in the garden we had high hopes, but these were rapidly dashed once we...had ordered our food (we decided to eat indoors). Our order was taken by a man who appeared to be the manager/owner. He made no attempt to establish a rapport with us or to enter into conversation with us (even though my friend made a comment about having worked hard during Race Week and how she was looking forward to a good meal). Our meals took 45 minutes to arrive. Various waiters/waitresses walked past our table with food for other customers during this time, but at no point did any of them reassure us that our food would arrive soon. I had ordered chips with my meal, which did not arrive with it. The manager/owner assured me he would bring them. The chips finally arrived 15 minutes later, with no apology for the delay. After we had finished eating we asked for the bill. This arrived quite quickly, but we then sat for about 10 minutes, waiting for somebody to come and ask if we would like to pay. We waited a few more minutes and no member of staff approached us, so we went to the bar to pay. We were totally ignored, despite the fact that there were three members of staff behind the bar including the manager/owner. We were standing directly in front of him holding the bill and a credit card, but he ignored us and instead served a customer who had just approached the bar. As women not in the first flush of youth, we are used to being invisible, but this was nothing short of rude. At no point did any member of staff ask us if everything had been all right with our meals, even when we asked for the 10% discretionary service charge to be taken off the bill. I have never worked in Hospitality, but even I would have expected somebody to check at this point whether there was anything they could have done better. We were left with the distinct impression that the staff at The Lion were only interested in taking our money, and had no interest at all in whether our experience there had been satisfactory. Very disappointing.More

Seven of us had a very good meal here. Everyone enjoyed what they chose, good portion sizes. Not cheap but good quality. Even gave a biscuit to our dog

We had roasts & salmon for Sunday lunch. We all thought it expensive & only “ok”. The pork in particular was a poor cut of meat & quite chewy. We would not recommend & would not visit again……unless the price comes down & the meat...in particular is a better joint.More

We have our family Christmas lunch at The Lion every year and 2021 was no different. Despite being told by a close friend recently how bad her experience was, our intentions of Christmas Eve lunch were still on. Having pre-ordered months in advance (and although...surprised to find out the Christmas menu that was advertised had ceased on Xmas eve) we still ordered. We arrived at 2:15 as instructed and upon arrival ordered prosecco (Christmas, after all!) to be told there were not enough champagne flutes and therefore some of us went without. Next, 6 out of 7 of our lunches arrived. -The pre-ordered fish and chips were cold and although requesting garden peas months prior, arrived with mushy peas! -The steak was overcooked, dry and the peppercorn sauce took so long to arrive we asked twice. -Unfortunately, the pre-ordered sides never came, either. We had all nearly finished eating whilst we are still waiting for one meal.... Because my mother didn't get prosecco, we requested an orange juice which they had run out of so we asked for a apple and mango but this never arrived either. After finishing our quite frankly, disappointing and late mains we were looking forward to our pre-ordered desserts. Until, we were told the desserts we pre-ordered were no longer available ?? After looking at the new menus, we noticed the whole family had different ones and needed assistance to understand which menu was correct. Our desserts were nice, except the profiteroles were stale/crunchy! Finally, we ordered 6 coffees. One didn't arrive (so my mum didn't get prosecco, orange juice or even receive a coffee. A whole meal without a drink!) Although our waitress was lovely, we requested to bring this meal to the managers (Cleo's) attention. Well, we have never met someone so UNPROFESSIONAL and RUDE. Frankly, she argued everything and made excuses. We didn't even receive an apology. After taking the beef (that we didn't receive for 25 minutes) off and the service charge she slammed the bill on our table and walked off. We sat around the table in disbelief and drove home feeling really disappointed. An absolutely absurd experience after so many years of great ones. Would 100% steer clear until they sort the kitchen and management. SHAME!More

A very crowded restaurant and not Covid comfortable as far as we were concerned. The tables were a bit too close together than we would have liked but the food was tasty enough, service fair to middling, not keen on the 10% add on for...service, though the British way of not making a fuss just means we won't be back.More

I’ve only used the restaurant entrance where you wait in the lobby to be taken to a table. You’d be better ringing them
