Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came here with a friend, was nice to know it was gluten free as coeliacs eating out can be a challenge. Very tasty and good value for money. The lady serving us was very friendly, helpful and attentive. Not many tables but luckily we found...a seat before it quickly filled up. Will return.More

Originally intended to go in to Smiles cafe for a brunch but they turned out to be closed so we went down to the Fisherman’s Kitchen - and weren’t we pleased we did! My wife and I had seniors cod and chips and it was...absolutely perfect! The fish portion was considerably bigger than expected, it looked as though it was a standard or large, tasted wonderful, the batter was so delicious perfect crispness and great taste, fish itself was a beautiful white and again tasted superb. And a special mention to the lovely young lady who did everything from taking orders, clearing and cleaning tables, taking payment etc. She did all this and more with the nicest of smiles, chatty and friendly and clearly took a lot of care with her appearance ie well manicured nails and face makeup beautifully done. Overall, we really enjoyed our fish and chips and will be back more often.More

I spent £20 and put it in the bin. Chips were anaemic and the fishcakes were mash potato cakes, no cod in them at all

We heard about The Fisherman's Kitchen on a gluten-free support website, and stopped by after taking part in the Great South Run with the intention of buying some chips to take away. When we arrived, there was a table for two available, with the tempting...invitation to "take a seat and we'll come to you to take your order". We were a little reluctant at first, as we weren't sure of the extent of the gluten-free menu, but when we asked, we were advised that almost everything on the menu was naturally gluten-free, and we could choose what we wanted (in fact the menu was the reverse of what we were used to: all non-gf items were identified!). It was so nice to be able to enjoy a plate of cod and chips, which tasted amazing - and we were delighted that we could have the vinegar too. Great food, great service from the lady who made us feel totally relaxed - 100% would recommend (in fact we already have!), and 100% would go back!More

What used to be a great fish and chip shop has now gone terribly down hill. We used to love ordering from here and thought it was one of the best in Portsmouth but as of late you can tell it has changed and the...quality of what they are sending you out as decreased significantly. We hadnt enjoyed our last 2 orders from here but stupidly decided to persist incase things had returned to normal, we were wrong. Tonight was the worst, as soon as I opened the box containing the chips, I could tell they were bad. Dark brown in colour, over 50% scraps and any that were big enough to call a chip were completely over cooked to the point when you bit into them you questioned weather this was good for your teeth. The batter on the cod was so sloppy and tasteless too. £37 wasted and in the bin. Won't be ordering from here ever again. They've clearly lost what they once had. AvoidMore

I have always loved coming here but it feels like it has changed hands now. They used to do really good specials and really nice onion crumb batter. Luckily, they still do the butcher sausage but what happened to the other amazing options that made...this place different?? It was always my go to place for F&Cs. Now it is just the same old as any other Fish & Chip place which is a shame.More

Well, mixed thoughts about Fishermen's Kitchen. Having already tried other fish and chips in Southsea we said next time we went we would try FK as the reviews were good. Having checked out firstly TripAdvisor and then their own website we were a little surprised,...no matter how many times I hit the "menu" button we couldn't check prices which I thought was odd but decided we would give it a go anyway. Once my wife came back I could see why. Wife ordered large haddock & chips, a fishcake, & a sausage for the mutt. Whilst the fish was nice, for a large portion the fish wasn't "large " but more a medium. The chips weren't even a small portion, very disappointing considering the price we paid. For the above order we paid nearly £21. The sausage went down well with the dog I couldn't comment on the taste. The fishcake , whilst well made & looked better than the average chip shop fishcake, I have to say the average chip shop one's were much tastier. This one was very bland and tasteless, & they charge £3.75 for it., yes that's right £3.75. WOW. Unfortunately left with the feeling of being ripped off so won't be returning.More

Superb Fish & Chips. The gluten free batter is fantastic! It is light, crispy and the fish it batters is fresh and beautifully cooked. Made a coeliacs day :-)

Quite simply one of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten. Both the fish and chips were piping hot and crisp - no slimy chips here!. The fish was outstanding. Beautifully cooked and well presented. Very friendly service too. We will return.

Visited here for an impromptu dinner one Friday evening. We had great service - quick, friendly, polite - and the food was lovely. I had battered halloumi and chips which was lovely and my Mum had cod roe and chips which she enjoyed too. Located...in the heart of Southsea, so really convenient. Highly recommend!More

Really wanted and expected to like this place based on good reviews, but were a little disappointed, especially by the chip s which were hard and seemed like they might have been hanging around for some time being reheated, before we got them. The batter...on the fish was superb, could not be any better, we had a very large piece of haddock each, which was freshly cooked to order and was good and meaty, although not as flavoursome as haddock can beMore

Pricey, but really good chippy. The first time we visited I thought it was the best f+c I'd ever tasted, particularly the batter on the fish and sausages which was fantastic. Maybe it's just us, but we can't say those standards have been reached on...our visits since and the chips have been pretty average, comparable to most other chippies. However although it seems to be different, the light and crispy batter (and curry sauce, peas etc) is/are still better than most and I'm sure we'll visit again.More

The seating area is small and doesn’t lend itself to possible trip hazards such as dogs etc. However the fish is very good and so are the staff.
