Ate here as a family just before visiting the Mary Rose. The pub had recently been refurbished and was clean and welcoming. We had our daughter and 7 week old grandson with us and the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating, welcoming us in, suggesting where to store the pram, feed the baby and offering baby change facilities, so we all felt very relaxed. The food was absolutely excellent, brought speedily when we explained we were on a tight schedule and reasonably priced too. My husband and I had the sharing fish platter with extra cheesy chips and my daughter had the aubergine and cauliflower curry ( vegan) both dishes were piping hot, freshly cooked and delicious. All in all a really great pub with super friendly staff and great food.

The Ship and Castle recently put on a Carvery for an event for us for 60 people. The food was delicious and plentyfull, including good vegan and vegetarian options. It took a while to serve all of us but even for the last tables the meat was still juicy and hot. An excellent selection of meat and accompanying vegetables for a good price. We hope to be back!

Me and my boyfriend came here for lunch today and weren’t at all pleased. Due to current circumstances we could not get out of our seats to order food. After 20 minutes I eventually shouted for a waiter to come over so we could order food, once he brought our drinks we were asked to pay for our food then and there, which we later observed hadn’t done with any family there. We found this incredibly rude. Afterwards we waited for over an hour for our food with no waiter/waitress asking whether we wanted any more drinks in the meantime. In addition a family who were there before us complained after waiting a while to be served cold food. We won’t be recommending this restaurant to anybody!

Just back from a lovely weekend in Portsmouth for a Naval reunion, went in the Ship & Castle for some food on Friday afternoon as it was near to where we were staying, Bar staff were very cheerful, we asked how we ordered food and you take a seat then decide what you want from the menu and order at the bar. I ordered the Double Cheeseburger, my wife ordered the Fish Pie, we waited 40 minutes for the food to arrive, when it arrived the burger was fine, but the fish pie had what appeared to be no fish in it, just a very large amount of mashed potato and some peas, rather than order another meal we shared the burger, when the waitress came to collect the plates we advised her that the fish pie was inedible as there was no fish in it, she just looked at us like we were making it up and walked off, no explanation or apology, I know fish is expensive at the moment but at £12.50 this was abysmal. Suffice to say we wont be going there again.

I booked this place for four of us after a quick search online for good roasts/carvery’s in the area. I was a little dubious but I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised. The decor is a little dated, but it had a lot of charm and was very clean and well kept. The staff were all friendly and very attentive. There was a good selection of lagers and ales (all very reasonably priced), as well as Fentiman’s soft drinks and Fevertree tonics. The carvery comprised of well cooked, quality meat joints, crispy roast potatoes, the best Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese as well as leeks in cheese sauce along with a good selection of veg, stuffing and gravy! Everything was replenished as necessary and the serving station kept clean and tidy (despite copious gravy and cauliflower cheese dribbles). The rest of the menu looked very appealing too, with some other traditional home made pub dishes. Overall excellent value. We will definitely be back!

We had some relatives visiting for the day as we hadn't seen them for a few years. In advance we visited a couple of places to look at the place & view the menus to sort out a place to meet up & meet & chat. The ship & castle had a very good menu with a great choice of options. The layout was clean, roomy & pleasant so we took a chance. We spoke to one of the friendly staff called Sam & she very kindly reserved a lovely round table to seat six people which was just what we wanted. We called back at the agreed time. They had a good selection of food &:drinks. We ordered 3xfish & chips, 1x chicken/ katsu curry sauce, a fish pie & 2x lasagna. When the food came out we were all very surprised & pleased with the quality & quantity. Without exception we all said how nice it was. So thanks to all the crew at the S&C it was great.

Four of us were going to have the carvery. On ordering we were told they were expecting a party for Christmas Meal including the carvery and we would have to wait until they had had theirs. On re ordering from the main menu I had to call for the attention of staff as they were chatting and oblivious that we were waiting to order. The meals arrived without cutlery and we had to chase this up. Also had to chase up the requested jug of water. Next time we will go to Greene and King a few doors away. The staff were more interested in talking to each other than looking after customers

We are now regulars to the Ship & Castle for the Sunday carvery, because the food is so, so lovely and fresh and there is always gluten free gravy and even cauliflower cheese too! Also, I must mention how fantastic the entire team of staff are here. Every single staff member takes time and trouble and even will bring a water ball and treats for our dog. Well done Sarah and everyone at Ship & Castle, it’s a great pub and we will keep returning.

We approached the Ship and Castle when looking for a venue for our son's wake. Sarah was amazing!! We initially attended a meeting to discuss our needs/requirements and Sarah cordoned off a section of the pub so that we were not interrupted. She discussed with us what WE wanted and what OUR budget was then advised how she could help. We were treated with complete respect. We were asked what kind of food did our son Danny like, what did he like to drink, what music did he like and so on. The evening before the funeral some of my family stayed in a nearby hotel but went to the Ship and Castle to eat. The food was amazing and, as on the day of the meeting, Sarah was very welcoming. My family were again given a quiet area where they could all eat together. The day of the funeral - well, what can I say? The pub was closed to the public from 12:00 - 18:00 for a small supplement. We were all welcomed with open arms, which did include hugs where needed from Sarah. This was totally Danny's day, even the staff rota was headed "Danny's Day". Danny's favourite drink, a cup coffee, was set on the table with his flowers, along with a glass of ale. We had asked for basic finger food for the buffet however the sandwiches were made with fresh, what I'd call real bread, not thin processed sliced bread. The pizza slices were more like french bread pizzas and the pies were deep and well filled. There was also All fresh and replaced as and when needed. Danny's favourite tunes were played on the juke box all day. The final act of kindness on Sarah's part was to toast Danny with a shot of real ale for everyone in attendance. I cannot recommend this establishment highly enough. We were made to feel so welcome and like family. The staff, including Kieran behind the bar and Sam were so kind and caring. On what should have been a sad day ended up being a real celebration of a young life cut so tragically short. Sarah and the whole team were fantastic and we cannot thank them enough.

Visited this lovely pub on Saturday, food never disappoints, fresh and full of flavour. The homemade ciriso mayo is the best we have had; top tip: made with vegan mayo who new, lovely!! The staff are so welcoming and friendly, I wish them ever success now they have re-opened. Looking forward to our next visit.

After a visit to the Historic Dockyard my family and I popped across the road to the Ship and Castle for lunch. We had never visited this pub before and were not sure what to expect. Needless to say, everything was brilliant. Friendly staff, warm atmosphere and the food was very good, in fact, for a pub the food was as good as any restaurant we have visited. What made it extra special for us was how the manager and staff made our kids feel so welcome and relaxed, they had a fun time and our waitress made sure that my youngest's dietary requirements were accommodated. All in all, a pleasant and unexpected pleasure. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

Located near the historic shipyard, the pub has good views of the harbour. We just made the cut off time for food on a Sunday night of 7:30pm. The staff were friendly and efficient. There were a group of patrons who were a bit drunk and the staff moved them on out of the pub, which seemed like responsible service of alcohol - well done. The food was good and the prices reasonable. The pub could probably do with a bit of a refurbishment but that didn’t impinge on our enjoyment during our visit.

We’ve eaten here many times over the last 6 years so thought I should do a review. My husband had the carvery which he said was one of the best ones he’s had. I had chilli (with chips instead of rice) comes with tortillas and soured cream and a salsa. Probably one of the best I’ve ever had. Far better then anything you will get in Gunwharf quays and much cheaper. Couldn’t fault anything. Highly recommend.

We had the carvery - we weren’t disappointed. Everything was fresh & hot . Choice of 4 meats & fresh veg . Red cabbage was the best . The way the staff manage how many go up at a certain time is good as they ensure the food is refilled as necessary Well done to the cheap & all staff
