A very enjoyable evening, friendly attentive unhurried service and beautiful interesting dishes. Easy to see why this restaurant has achieved its reputation. Would recommend a trip next door to the Black Boy pub for a pre dinner drink.

My children had booked the Black Rat as a surprise and we went for lunch. There was six of us in all and we also had my small grandson with us. We were not sure how child friendly the restaurant was (he is only six months) but we had a table slightly out of the way and as it happened... More

Birthday celebration meal, 12 of us including 4 children. We were given a warm welcome. The pre dinner drinks were slow to materialise and we only had time for a few sips before we were ushered to our table. Our starters included tongue, salmon and ham hock and were well received. The bread selection was good, especially the black squid... More

I have been very interested to visit this location for a long time and sample the food, the restaurant is nicely arranged and the staff do a good job, thoroughout the whole evening only once did we feel that we waited for someone to attend to us. For the food it is very reasonably priced around half the price of... More

The food is "new interpretation" of "olde original food" cooked and presented to a very high standard. A wide and varied menu which provided us with a new take on dishes from our past. 4 different starters, 4 different main meals, 4 different desserts: all excellent in quality of presentation and more importantly taste- Staff just added to the whole... The setting is really gorgeous, very rustic, the layout and decor is so well done and it is wonderfully cosy - I wish I could make this place my house, really stunning. I wasn't amazed by the food though, I had a crab ice cream to start which was really disgusting, I know a lot of restaurants these days try... More

My wife and I went to the Black Rat for a pre-Christmas dinner because it could be preceded with a day wandering around Winchester and the Christmas market and staying at the Black Hole over the road ensured a relaxing break. The meal commenced with a delicious carpaccio of beef, my wife having goat curry accompanied with three types of... More

We have wanted to try the Black Rat (despite the name, in fact) for a while and finally had a chance for a 80th birthday treat. It was a lovely evening and we all enjoyed it very much. Because we had to drive, we were very limited on what we could drink and sadly couldn't partake of the gourmet gin... More

Started with drinks in the bar upstairs, wife rated the gin as "superb". Then a top class meal in the cosy restaurant. Staff attentive and not too intrusive. Although they do like to top up your wine class. Will have to return soon, if we can make the 2 minute walk from our front door!

We have been to The Black Rat a few times and always enjoyed it, but we particularly enjoyed this most recent visit, my husband had the Goat curry to start which is said was amazing and could have had as a main course. The staff were really helpful and knowledgeable guiding us through the menu, our waiter Jose was really... More

Description
The Black Rat is a quaint and quirky restaurant that is situated on the fringe of the town centre along Chesil Street. A year after opening, the team acquired one of the most prestigious accolades in catering, a Michelin Star. The food is sourced from the best and most local suppliers that can be found, including our own forager, and in turn inspiring the kitchen team to create a "Modern British" menu. The wine comes from a very well established supplier, Ellis of Richmond, who supply some of the top restaurants and hotels in the UK.The atmosphere is relaxed but homely whereas the service is informal but attentive with a personal touch.
