We don't get out much anymore but decided to take advantgae of the new government scheme and thought we would try our lovely local pub which has been transformed under the new owners. Really well organised for Covid. One way system in place for into the garden, through the pub, etc. Hand sanitiser everywhere and the tables were very well spaced out. They have definitely taken the time and care to take it seriously. The food was delicious and obviously all home prepared and made. The hand cut chips were a big hit with all of us. My husband had the beef burger with bacon, cheese and red onion chutney which he inhaled and i had the steak which was just perfect. My daughter chose the fish fingers and chips which we were all really impressed with. We only had soft drinks so with the 50% off it came to only £34 which was an absolute bargain. We will definitely be back. The service was good, the food was perfect and we were all (including my children) made to feel so very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. Definitely go, you won't regret it! I'm looking forward to popping in in the winter to sit in their reading nook with a coffee!

Great atmosphere in this 17th century country pub. Lots going on with regular quiz nights, pop quizes and seasonal events. Great food lunch times and evenings, reccomend the Sunday roast especially. Always a warm welcome and a focal point for the village. Stop off for a drink after a walk or cycle in the local woods Monday and Tuesday evening is half price burgers! Bargin.

We visited for lunch and the food was freshly prepared and of good quality. The staff were welcoming and professional and I would definitely recommend the Goat to anyone who is looking for a lovely lunch. There is a lovely display of artwork from local photographers which really adds to the ambience.

We decided to dine here for lunch today as a family and we were disappointed and shocked at the ridiculously poor quality of the food and slow service. I ordered garlic mushrooms for a starter which came with what was supposed to be ‘toast’ but was a piece of bread with an incredibly vinegary garlic purée squirted on top (a purée that would be used as an ingredient for a recipe, not to put on a piece of ‘toast’). The mushrooms were in a bowl of grease and the dish, as a whole, was enough to put me off my main course! The main course was supposed to be a dressed salad with duck breast which sounded quite nice and I was looking forward to it but when it actually came out it was a very dry and tasteless duck LEG with an odd tasting salad. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was wrong with the salad but it tasted odd. The service was slow and we had been sat at our table for at least 15 minutes before we were even offered or brought any drinks however, when we expressed our opinions and complaints towards a member of staff at the bar he was apologetic and took the expense off our bill for some of the courses.

We ate here for the first time as part of the governments ‘eat out to help out scheme.’ Unfortunately the experience was a bit of a car crash. Had a friendly greeting and were seated at our restaurant table. Drinks arrived but the white wine was not very cold. We were told straight away that the pies had run out, which was fine, so we ordered one veggie and one beef burger instead. I would have preferred the halloumi salad as the weather was hot, but not for £16 which seemed very expensive. After about 15 minutes the waiter reappeared to let us know that there were no chips left in the building, only halloumi chips, so we agreed that it was fine to replace with halloumi chips (although I was surprised a pub could run out of chips especially as it was not particularly busy!) The waiter then reappeared another ten mins later advising that they had also run out of halloumi chips so the burgers would just come with salad. We didn’t fancy this so decided to change our order to bangers and mash (one veggie, one meat) as apparently they could still do mash but not chips. As a vegetarian, the lack of chips or halloumi meant my options were rapidly decreasing. Then another fifteen minutes later our original burger order arrives... with chips! Confused to say the least as were all the staff. The food once it had arrived was nice so we decided to order one dessert- Eaton mess. Ten mins or so after ordering the dessert the waiter appears and says that there will be a long wait for it. We were literally the last people left in the restaurant by this point so confused to say the least. We decided to call it a day and leave. The waiter was apologetic for the chaos of our visit and did remove the drinks from our bill without us asking which was a kind gesture, so this is why I’m not reviewing with a lower mark. However they have a lot of improvements to make as there is a lot of potential given the attractive location. Also the halloumi salad surely shouldn’t cost £16 which is the same price as a steak!

Hello and thank you for your review. This is not the normal standard of service at the goat and I would like to offer you both a free meal on your next visit. All our food is prepared fresh daily and with the government scheme meaning we served 400 people yesterday It caused some issues. The chef prepared some chips for you in service and this is why they arrived. The staff and kitchen have worked to implement some new systems and communications to prevent this from happening in the future. I hope to see you again at The Goat. Please call 01992535788 and ask for Laura

The goat website gives fab menu so we booked for 5 adults. On arrival we we given a different very sparse menu consisting of “basics”. Yet no salads offered. No eggs for ham egg and chips. No meat pie, no bread. We had to plead with the chef to make a chicken salad. I ordered a sharing plate of fish between a friend we had one stale roll between 2 that had been toasted to hide its condition. Others in our party picked their way through over cooked fish and fortunately, because they were so greasy, the tiny portion of chips. Looking around it would appear that the burger and chips was a better option. Great if you want a burger, suggest MCs. we had gone out for a nice website promised meal. Oh did I mention the service, it matched the food slow and forgetful. The goat sits opposite a pretty green. Take your own sandwiches.

Happened upon this Pub/Restaurant by accident. Easy to park. Lunch time midweek. A very warm welcome. Good choice of food and "specials" board. Served at table. Beer and Lager served immediately. Food order taken promptly. Food arrived in good time, looked lovely, condiments produced, food at perfect temperature, and tasted very good. Will call again even though I live 25 miles away.

I had a great time in The Goat last month: they had my favourite cider on tap, the food was great : steak and fries perfectly cooked (coming from a French person this means a lot). The service was great: staff was checking on us and were very friendly as were the owners. I will definitely be back when in Hertford !!

After a very challenging couple of months, I have found a sanctuary in this gorgeous quaint historic village pub run by wonderfully friendly staff in a gorgeous village setting. Laura has really upgraded this establishment and revolutionised the vibe with her family. Amy was a particularly attentive and considerate waitress when I took some wonderful friends from Bedfordshire here yesterday afternoon, who came to cheer me up after a particularly harrowing spell in my life.

Lovely pub with great staff. We went for a Sunday roast. We both went for the beef which came with a side dish of cauliflower cheese. A starter of garlic mushrooms. A Processco and a cider. £40 very reasonable. The starter was yummy. Very tasty indeed. The roast was disappointing. Not awful, but not great. The gravy was already over the meat (we like to add our own) it was a jelly like consistency (not home made). There were no greens on the plate (you didn’t get to choose the vegetables) so the plate looked a little dull and all beige. The cauliflower cheese had no sauce. It was boiled cauliflower with cheese mixed in. The cheese was bland and more like mozzarella and there was no white sauce, at the bottom of the dish it was all watery, such a shame. It looked good but it was just boiled cauliflower and not a cauliflower cheese. We will definitely be coming to the pub again but not for a Sunday roast.

We always enjoy visiting The Goat. The atmosphere is always inviting and friendly even now with Covid restrictions in place. They always seem to have good guest beers and a great selection of gins. The menu has a good selection, even for vegetarians! On the most recent visit the filled taco was a really great vegetarian meal; most definitely not your run of the mill veggie fare! The desserts are always delicious and are oft served with locally (ie 200 yards away) produced ice cream. Once again, a lovely pub and well worth a visit!

A nice little village pub with a mixed old world/modern contemporary decor vibe and a friendly atmosphere. The food was ok, I wouldn't say fabulous, and I did personally feel the menu was slightly limited, but maybe that was me on the day. having settled on some shared starters (not a lot for vegetarians on the whole menu really) we ordered those and a main each. Three of these meals came with what they described as "chips". They were not. I get that this is not the end of the world, but if I want wedges, which I never do because I cannot abide them (or skin on chips) I would order them. These were straight out of the quarter of an unpeeled potato whack 'em in the oven school of cookery. I get that this is my gripe and many would not be phased (my table mates were not, but agreed they were NOT chips) but say what you are selling please. I did politely mention it to the waitress that "sorry, but these aren't actually chips" and was told "yes they are" pregnant pause........ Me "sorry but they are actually wedges"............... "no, they are our chips" ................ Apparently I stand corrected. On the whole a decent experience, and I would recommend, but skin on spud haters beware! :)

Lunchtime at the very friendly Goat. Very friendly greeting and varied menu. Fish Finger sandwich was nice , although the bread was a little too thick . The other sandwiches, cheese & tomato and Brie & bacon were also very tasty but a little too large doorstep bread. Will definitely go back to try the other delights on the menu

I recently costed the Goat for the first time for some drinks. The best thing by far was the food. I had pork belly bites as a starter and the pie of the day (steak and mushroom) both were incredible. The pork was by far the best I’d ever had before. They literally melted in your mouth. The pie was had lovely flaky pastry, large chunks and plentiful of steak. Not like most places where you often find 2 or so small pieces on the pie. The pub was busy as the weather was nice and restrictions only just eased. The staff were clearly very busy and constantly on the move, but we still had service with a smile and they were happy to ask any questions I had about the food (and there were quite a few!). Beautiful spot with friendly staff and food that it out of this world. Would highly recommend.
