Was looking forward to eating at this restaurant as they offer a gluten free menu and a dairy free menu. We questioned the taramasalata on the GF menu, knowing it is generally made with bread crumbs. The waiter assured us it was GF. Unfortunately there is no GF bread on offer, so we had to order an extra dish (about 6 sticks each of cucumber and carrot for £2.90 to go with it), When a different waiter bought the food over, we wanted to clarify that the taramasalata was GF and he told us it wasn't and that most of the dishes on the GF menu are not actually gluten free. We were offered halloumi slices as the only alternative, but it had to be grilled as the deep fat fryer is used to fry everything else in. We got 3 slices of halloumi, which were dry and chewy. There are no desserts for GF or dairy intolerant people. The waiter did say he would get some fruit for us from the bar and bought over 4 strawberries, 2 raspberries and 8 blueberries, which I guess was better than nothing. My son and I wouldn't go back as their lack of allergen advice could have made us seriously ill. The service wasn't all that good either and we found it hard to attract a waiters attention. If it was just me and my son, I would have rated this 1, but as the other 4 members of our group enjoyed their meals, I've given it a generous 3.

Dear Mrspe18 In our gluten free menu there are 14 cold and hot starters also 33 different dishes are gluten free, so it is not realistic to say gluten free menu completely wrong . Yes tarama salad was written on menu by mistake and our waiter came and warned you about tarama salad not for other dishes, we explained that mistake about tarama salad and we corrected it. We explained and wrote to you directly after clarification the situation it’s sad to read same feedback here again after we explained everything. Secondly it’s not true to say halloumi cheese not gluten free! Its gluten free because we don’t cook on pan or in deep fry we cook on charcoal grill. On the other hand as you know most of the restaurant don’t serve bread ,even if they do they charge for it! And you have to pay. We don’t charge for bread and olives so we can’t have too many options for something we already given from the house. Yes we don’t have gluten free deserts when you asked for fruit we say we don’t have it. We had only some fruits for cocktails preparation after you insist we tried our best to serve some fruits just for you that was all we had in hand and didn’t charge to you for fruit, as I mentioned we don’t serve fruit at our restaurant. So it’s not fair to criticize us sharply for something we don’t have. Summary as a family restaurant health of our guests our priority and we take every feedback in to the consideration seriously which we did with yours. During your dining experience we tried our best and after that we contacted you and explained everything about Tarama salad. I usually don’t reply my guests comments just take in to consideration but the comments you wrote here is not fair and not completely true about us. Also although we are not completely gluten free restaurant as you will know, we are trying our best to serve some gluten free dishes. Kind regards Management

I celebrated my birthday which coincided with end of the COVid lockdown here.... Food options were delicious and on point with varied vegetarian/vegan options available . Great location makes car parking possible right in front of the restaurant. Ambience was really refreshing with volume of background music just about right for enjoying your conversations. The restaurant was also very spacious so social distancing was very easy to observe. Outside terrace sitting possible too. You watched as your meal was freshly prepared by the chef on the charcoal grill. Yodi the owner as well as his staff members were all really warm , helpful and cheerful. This is a hidden gem in the heart of St Albans and is highly recommended. I

Unfortunately, the service was lacking somewhat. Booked online for 1900 and received an email stating that 1830-2000 was available. I accepted the revised time and received an email confirming our reservation. We arrived on time to be told our booking was for 1900. I explained the online booking and was shown the list with 1900 next to my name. Now feeling awkward, I said we’d return in half an hour. At that point we were asked to wait while a table was sorted and we were seated. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio Blush, a bottle of white arrived and as the waiter was about to pull the cork, we noticed it was white and this was rectified. Twice asked for water which arrived 15 minutes later. I ordered some bread with our main meal which didn’t arrive and it took 20 minutes to receive our bill. Because of this I declined to pay the added service charge and was asked by the waiter as to why. His response was that bread is complimentary and failed to acknowledge the poor service. On settling the bill he said “sorry you didn’t get your bread”. Food was good, in general overpriced 21.5 for a mixed kebab. Sadly will not be returning, a disappointing experience.

We had a 18:30 booking here and the night before I phoned to ask if we could push the booking back 30 minutes, he said that this was fine but they have to have the table back by 20:30. It was a Friday night so I can understand, with it being by the station I suspect it was busy. On the booking I asked for a table by the window, when we got in there we were put at the back in the corner next to a fire exit. We started looking at the menu and he came straight over to us asking if we were ready to order, considering we'd been in there 30 seconds it already felt like we were being rushed. We ordered drinks and whilst we looked at the menu I asked him if we could order bread and some hummus etc, he flat out said no.....He said we couldn't have anything on the table until we had ordered our meal, no follow up or anything or even to say he'll grab it when we've ordered he just said no and that was the end of that When we discussed the menu with him we asked that if we order a salad could we get a portion of lamb on the side......We explained that whatever it was we'd pay it, he told us no....He said only off the menu and didn't offer an alternative, again just a flat out no and had a face like thunder. So we actually managed to figure out a way around it but had to order a starter with the salad, I have no idea why he couldn't have suggested this but again just said no and he seemed like he just wanted us to hurry up. When the food came over he just stood there watching us, almost like he was waiting for us to finish so he could clear our table and get us out of there. He came over just before 8pm and again 15 minutes later to remind us that we had to be off the table by 8:30pm, when we finished and paid there was no thank you he just walked off like we had insulted him. What was quite frustrating is that the food was nice but the service was shameful, the waiter was not helpful, rude and it was clear to see how much he wanted to clear our table. Very disappointing considering how good the service is in other restaurants in the area, will not be back any time soon

Dear James As you will know Friday and Saturday is our most busiest days. We give table to our customers according to the size of the table. You wished to sit by the window which there was a table for 6 however yourself was 3 therefor we couldn’t allow you to sit there. Also the table we asked you to sit at was the most requested table as it is at the end corner away from the door away from the cold wind. Starter and main course are taken together on weekends for the kitchen to organise itself better. The kitchen team starts preparing your main course while your eating your starter. The main purpose here is not to allow any delays. Otherwise, there will be a risk of delaying the meal and this will be the last thing we want seeing our customers unhappy. Our aim is to provide better and faster service. Besides, as we have stated to you, because we have taken the orders at the same time it does not mean that we will get the starter and main meal at the same time, we will bring the main meal after eating your starter and we get the table prepared for the main course. The other issue was the salad, you have asked us to put meat into the salad however as you will remember we told you the reason why this can not happen. On busy days we will not go out of the existing menu, because the kitchen and services will have difficulties and a confusion will occur. But we have also told you if we can provide the food changes you want we will definitely do so especially on weekdays or calm hours. As for the explanation about standing next to the table: there are many waiters working at the same time, as you noticed, and each waiter has a working secton. As your table was at corner the waitress that was responsible for that section was standing there so that it would be easier for customers to ask for all there needs. Otherwise all the workers had to stand in a corner and make everything even harder for all customers. Therefore the waiter that was standing there was not to make you feel uncomfortable it was do provide a better service for you and the other tables. As your table was book till 20.30 we couldn’t ask you to leave before that time and that was not our goal. As we have done with you we give time while getting reservations. And we came to your table at 8.15pm and said that we had a reservation in 15 minutes and it was a reminder just to inform you. And wanted to ask if you needed anything before you time was over. Our regular customers will know that most of the time the reservation could be 15 till 30mins off time, however we had a large group that was booked for 8.30pm for your table. As you will remember that group was at the door standing waiting for us to prepare the table for them. We apologize that we can not give you more time and reminded you of the customers waiting at the door. In summary, as a result of this comment, we, as the manager’s respect your thoughts. The reason I took time to reply back to you was because it will be great if you could be more understandable In situations like this because nothing is perfect and we are learning from our experiences. Hope to see you again Kind Regards

I’m struggling to even put into words how atrocious our visit to Ayos was. The first issue arose soon after arrival, my wife has a small appetite and therefore just fancied a starter and she had planned to pick at my main with a few side dishes. However, when we went to order we were told it was their policy that everyone must order a main meal. I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous. Well, that was until I asked for my main course (moussaka) to be served with chips instead of rice. This seemed a reasonable request, I don’t like rice, chips are on the menu, might as well avoid food waste etc. But no, I was rudely told that wouldn’t be possible as the kitchen was too busy (to plate up chips instead of rice) but I was offered an additional side of chips (at an extra cost). My wife ended up ordering a veg kebab, expecting grilled vegetables on a skewer or something similar (based on the menu description) but what arrived is best described as a stew, mushy veg in a tomato sauce. When we complained the waiting staff had no interest, we were just told it was a kebab. I’m afraid there is just little positive to say. The tables are too close together, it was like dining with strangers and the music (live) was so loud it was like eating in a nightclub. It is also massively overpriced for what it is.

We ordered starters and mains, I also ordered a side, mains arrived but the side didn’t. I politely asked where it was, the waiter rudely responded “it will arrive when it’s ready”. 10 minutes later still no sign of the side, I asked again and the waiter said he can’t deal with these types of issues, he will get the manger. 30 mins later I had finished my main and I advised the side is no longer needed. The manger huffs and 10 mins later comes out with my side and dropped it on the table, then ran off before I can say a word. When the bill arrived I asked them if they can take the side off as I had already finished eating and it was no longer needed. The waiter clearly annoyed with the request went to get the manger who told us to leave and don’t pay anything in an aggressive manner. I advised I’m happy to pay for what I had eaten, but not the side, he replied “leave”. We started to leave and then the owner comes running in screaming that we need to pay. Again happy to pay, but not the side. They all then start gathering around us shouting that we should pay, completely ignoring the side issue and comments from the manager. I then requested to take off service (because it was terrible) which caused even more of an issue. I ended up paying full because they are so aggressive. What a terrible family business, they should all be ashamed of them selfs. I’ve been here a few times because they have a lot of reviews, they must pay for these because the food is very average and the service is shockingly bad. We will never go here again. The owners keep trying to remove my review from this site, obviously scared of the truth and explains whey they have so many positive reviews here, they get all the negative ones removed!

As I mentioned on my previous comment ,only respond to people who are disrespectful and rude to staff. We have already answered your review and you are now writing with different names!!! I know this is not going to change the fact you will keep commenting with different names. However I am only responding for other customers. We are always open to criticism in every way, I only respond to lies and rudeness In order not to pay for your food, you wanted to play a game With us which is you played many times before .The funny thing is that you said you didn't like the food even though you finished everything on your plate. Even at the rush hour, when the restaurant is fully booked You sat at your table and ate your main course in 30 minutes, which shows how fast we serve. Only one side chips was forgotten which can be some times specially when restaurants fully booked. And we did serve 5 minutes later, after realizing your true purpose looking for excuses not to pay ! We removed chips from your bill and served second chips on the house as well additionally we remove service charge as well. The other funny thing is that when the employees came to talk to you, you showed the trip advisar application before you started talking. I guess you was trying to threaten us that you would do what you are doing at the moment. You tried to provoke us when you couldn't find a real excuse. You spoke abusively and rudely to the waiter. Nobody is your slave, you don't need to play these games to avoid paying money in restaurants. We don't need rude and insulting customers like you, this is a family restaurant and we want our customers to treat us respectfully just the way we do. The reason why I wrote this answer is that I want people to learn the truth. As a family Restaurant, we have always respected the real comments, even if they are harsh, and we have taken them into account to improve ourselves. But we cannot respect those who lie and insult our employees.

I visited Ayos with a group of friends, our table was booked for 7.30pm. On arrival there was a bit of mix up with the size of our table, but one was pulled over to accommodate us. Our drinks order and food order were taken quickly. The food was served quickly apart from one meal, we were told this had been dropped and will follow shortly. When it arrived, a bowl of chips was given complimentary. The food itself was very good and enjoyed by all. This is where the good service ended. I sat with an empty glass, clearly in view, for about 20 mins. No-one asked if we required more drinks during the entire meal. After the table had been cleared of mains plates, nobody offered a dessert menu, which we would have had, or if we wanted coffee. It became obvious that they wanted us out as quick as possible for more customers, so we got the bill and left. This was just before 9pm. With hindsight, we should have deducted the service charge. We felt that for one drink, a starter and a main for £40pp was expensive. I won't be returning

AYOS is just an incredible venue. We have dined there on many occasions and always been delighted with food, service and levels of hospitality. This independent restaurant focuses on the key elements of all great hospitality venues. Exceptional team members, fresh local ingredients, love and attentive service to all customers and excellent value Recently we held a party for about 100 and it was seamless. Nothing was too much trouble for the team, all our guests couldn’t have been better attended to. If you’re in search of a unique restaurant experience where YOU the customer comes first and foremost AYOS should be your first choice.

The staff were immensely kind at our clumsiness. The food is Turkish. Delicious with fresh ingredients. All 6 of us enjoyed ourselves. Our granddaughter is Coeliac and this didn't phase the waiting staff who made suggestions as to what they could make for her. Their Turkish red was drunk to accompany the food. Very good value at about £20 a head including service, for starters, main course and various drinks including wine. They told us that on Friday and Saturday nights they have a singer performing and there's dancing because the customers can't sit still! Book well in advance as very popular.

Second time posting this review, after it was flagged as "inappropriate". After the night I had, I feel it is important to share this experience. Went along with some girlfriends on a Friday night for a birthday. I won't be going back. I was told they had live music, which I had imagined would be someone playing an acoustic guitar and singing or something like that. But instead it was someone singing over backing tracks into a massive amplifier for hours. It was so loud - I mean ridiculous given the size of the place. It completely spoiled the meal, as it was impossible to talk and it even made ordering anything difficult without yelling. The music wasn't even nice. I asked them to turn the music down, and the waiter seemed to think I was joking, just laughed and walked off. Great. Generally on the service, that also wasnt great. Slow and not very friendly, with too many of the waiters more interest in chatting up ladies than serving. As far as the food goes, it was okay, but nothing special. A pretty standard chicken kebab, a side salad that was a little brown (clearly made much earlier in the day, not cut fresh). Pretty expensive for what it was. Overall, not great at all.

Dear Ellie We are sorry to hear that your experience was not up to standard and we will take all your comments on board. We have a very high standard of service at our restaurant and we apologise for the way in which you were treated. Our food is always freshly prepared and grilled/ cooked once ordered. Usually we have positive feedback from customers about our singer but again apologise for any inconvenience. We hope to see you again Regards Ayo’s

This restaurant is set back from the main drag of eateries in St Albans within a few minutes walk of the high street Beautifully presented and thoughtfully laid out the restaurants floor plan accommodates live music and a singer at weekends Well thought out menu of Turkish dishes to suit all palates Extremely busy most nights as a very popular venue so booking a reservation is a absolute must . Tables are allocated in two hour slots . There is also additional security on the external door . Last night the atmosphere was buzzing , the singer was tasteful and soulful and the food was amazing Flavoursome fresh ingredients cooked to perfection with generous portion size . Service was excellent and the servers were on their game last night . We had a very very enjoyable meal to celebrate a family birthday and a family anniversary in great surroundings Thanks guys we look forward to eating with you again very soon and would highly recommend to others .

We celebrated our daughter's baptism at Ayo's with 30 guests and could not have asked for a better venue for the event. Contact in the lead up to the party was excellent with the team being very responsive to any requests. There is something special about the atmosphere there for a party as it is so relaxed, it feels more like being in a luxury home and they were very laid back with all the children. The food was exceptional, service very attentive and we have had compliments from almost every guest since the party commenting on how great the food/venue/staff were. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anybody looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion.

Went for my partners birthday with friends and the food was good, however staff/restaurant were extremely unaccommodating. Lots of rules in place, some of which can be seen on the website, some which they just enforce on site (e.g. no male groups). One of example of them being Unaccommodating is when one of my friends asked for chips instead of rice with their meal and got the response ‘we do not do exchanges at the weekend’ which is ridiculous. They had to buy the chips extra, but still got the rice which they didn’t want which was a waste of food. You also need to be careful when going at the weekend as if you sat in one half of the restaurant you wouldn’t be able to hear anything as the music is very loud. I wouldn’t go back because of the attitudes of the business.

Rude staff, terrible uncooked food Rude staff, messed up order, missed items that was ordered, food that did arrive was cold and meat was under cooked. Tried to complain, waiter refused to deal with it and said he would get the manager, 3 requests later and the manager did not arrive. Forth time manager arrived and threatened one of the guests. Avoid this place, dodgy staff with terrible food, TAha was a terrible manger and they threatened me saying I shouldn’t leave a review.

Really lovely food and cocktails and the music was good too, although songs were a bit cheesy but did get everyone up dancing. The live music was good. Service was a bit slow to start as we sat for ages before anyone came over and asked if we wanted any drinks. When they did come over to ask we didn’t have a menu to choose the drinks from. Then after a while 3 different waiters came over and asked to take drinks order. The staff were nice and did their jobs but weren’t particularly chatty or friendly. Also, when we booked we were told there was a huge waiting list and we had to pay deposits to confirm our table yet there were only 3 of us and had to reconfirm a few days before. BUT on the night although busy on arrival, by 9.30 it had emptied out and only a few tables stayed for the live music.
