I love this place. Great food and great garden in the summer. It has however always been disappointing that they have had this antiquated rule in place that no kids are allowed! However it appears that with a new manager has come some new sensible policies and kids are now more than welcome. Friends told us that this was now... More

One of the unique selling points for The Peahen was the over 21 policy which meant a lovely place to escape for a lunch without children running around whilst enjoying a relaxing meal and/ beverage. Disappointed today to see this policy no longer us in place...although the website still advertising this. Unfortunately this will no longer be a favoured lunch... More

How lovely, we have finally found a place in the heart of St Albans that allows us to have a full English breakfast, without having to sit outside because of our dog. The staff were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. The Peahen is spacious enough that there is room for everyone. Added to this, the breakfast itself was really good,... More

We often come here on a Sunday morning for coffee. Great tasting coffee and delicious complimentary Danish pastries. The staff are always very welcoming and friendly. Very relaxing place on Sunday morning for coffee and a read of morning papers. No children policy is great!!

My wife and I recently had breakfast at the peahen in st albans.when we walked in we waited to be shown to a table, the waiter standing turned and started to walk away until I made my presence known. His response was to tell us to find a seat in a off handed manner. The waitress who served us was polite... More

Although a tad expensive for beer, this place has great staff, amazing food, and a buzzy vibe St albans needs! Love it even better in the summer, gorgeous garden!

I hadn't been here for some time and assumed that there would be some jazz on, as it was a Wednesday evening. There wasn't. The place was quite quiet, but when we ordered our drinks they took some time to come. When we ordered our food, from a very limited menu that also took ages to arrive. There was only... More

This is a very nice place to have food and drinks and the staff is very friendly. However lately the breakfast service has been rather disappointing. We go there quite often but we noticed that the food service has gone down. For instance the pancakes we were served looked and tasted as if they were reheated in the microwave and... More

I came here for lunch with my girlfriend. The place looked lovely, warm and inviting. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. The food however was a let down. This place has great atmosphere and selection of alcohols, I'd advice you spend your food money elsewhere.

The first mention of The Peahen is in 1480, and on the construction of London Road in the 18th Century it was merged with the adjoining pub, The Woolpack.

Trading as a hotel, The Peahen was a vital stopping point on the way through to London for tourists and business folk. The original wood building burnt down towards the end of the 19th Century and was rebuilt in its current form as The Peahen Hotel.

In 1936 McMullen & Sons Ltd, the family brewers of Hertfordshire established in 1827, came into possession of The Peahen and remain its proud custodians to this day.
