My bestie and her two little boys and myself visited today for a breakfast. We are veggie and Vegan the staff were so lovely and friendly! We wanted to make a couple of changes to the set breakfast and they did so without any trouble and made us two amazing breakfasts! They even make their own vegan meats which were so delicious. I also had a lovely latte which was decorated with a heart. The milkshake we ordered came with a compostable straw which always makes me happy! I love visiting green conscious places. I noticed they are also part of the too good to go no food waste scheme. The food and drink are very fairly priced. The whole establishment was spotless, super clean. We were very well looked after and it really made our morning wonderful. Thank you! We will be back!

Heard about Stag from a friend, and was strongly advised to try, best advice in a long time! My son had chicken, my husband a burger and I had a vegan burger, all food arrived promptly, well cooked and beautifully presented. I had to remind myself that I was eating a vegan burger, the texture and flavour was lovely, and as a habitual meat eater I was very pleasantly surprised. Nice position opposite the Canterbury Tales and I could see the Cathedral from where I sat, service attentive without being intrusive, special mention to our lovely waitress Aisha. Will definitely be returning to work our way through the menu, highly recommend, try for yourself!

My vegan breakfast had 2 sausages as there was no vegan bacon. One tiny half tomato was overcooked to virtually nothing. The toast was cold. The mushrooms were inedibly shriveled and the tofu scramble tasted of garlic and possibly curry powder. I left the mushrooms and the tofu scramble.
I don't understand why so many places think vegans like this kind of thing. They'd never dream of putting such flavours into scrambled eggs. Making it yellow does not make it a scrambled egg equivalent!
The rest of the breakfast was ok. Two good sized hash browns were nice. The sausages were good. But an adequate vegan version of a regular breakfast it wasn't.
Still hungry, I had a second coffee and a piece of vegan chocolate orange cake, which was really nice.
I appreciated reimbursement of the cost of my cake and second coffee because of my disappointment at the breakfast. I hope they improve their vegan breakfast for future diners. I suspect they won't.
I prefer oat milk in my coffee but don't believe any plant milk should come at an additional cost, so I had soya milk.
My husband enjoyed his cheeseburger.
All 'vegan options' should be as good as regular menu items.
Thanks.

We went for food today. We ordered scrambled egg on toast and got scrambled egg on toast with salmon. A tuna mayo baguette, we got a cheese and tuna hot baguette. And two beef burgers one with just cheese and chips and one with chips and salad. Instead i got a burger and some chips, no salad or anything and the other got two burgers on one bap and some chips. Then they had a tiny bit of tomato sauce and ran out after one squirt. No one asked us how our food was or checked. After waiting for ages for the bill he just came with the card machine and didn’t ask us about our meal at all. Disappointed as we came over for two days from North Wales to see family. First meal in Canterbury and just feel very disappointed, was surprised as it was quite busy outside. Our food took 40 mins, and after the burgers and egg on toast was delivered it took several minutes for the sandwich as it seemed they had forgot to make it.

We had small traditional breakfast here with tea. Both were value for the money we paid ( in fact there’s a morning special that makes for a good combined price indeed). Before any lunchtime rush, so pleasantly quiet. Food was served hot ( most places for me seem to have difficulty with that) and tasty. Take note, the mushrooms and tomato ( slow roasted with balsamic vinegar) - absolutely delicious and making standard fare almost gourmet. Very nice touch. The tea by Novus was new to us, but was far beyond your average cuppa. Will be visiting way more often and to cap it off, Fred behind the counter, was truly personable. Needed to let Canterbury know there’s a good alternative out there, beyond the plethora of average.

So we visited the Stag today. The food and drinks were very nice but service terrible. The front of house staff member served our drinks (just left them on the table without saying a word) we didn't like the attitude, cutlery was missing and condiments. The kitchen staff gave us what was missing but the front of house staff seemed uninterested to help them.

I chose here as I’ve not been in before and it looked nice. Good location for a bit of people watching. I have one day a week to myself and I like to have lunch on my own and sit and watch the world go buy. There are many, many lovely places in Canterbury to eat so I feel compelled to give feedback as competition in this industry is fierce. The menu looked lovely. I would happily have eaten anything on there. I chose the hummus on sourdough with avocado. It was ok. Very average. The piece of bread was thin and tiny. It needed 2 slices for almost £7. There was supposed to be some sort of pickle on top but it was missing. There was a small salad that accompanied it, spinach and tomato. That was the extent of it. The hot drinks were nice but and service was friendly. I overheard the table next to me complaining about the quality of their food. Looking at the reviews, it seems this was not a one off. I would hate to see this place close as it has so much potential.

Have been to the stag a few times for brunch, the fry up is very nice and they have a lot of good vegan and gluten free options. However, a lot seems to have changed recently, the tea has drastically gone down hill, far too many tea leaves for the size pot and they wrong tea is consistently given (breakfast tea when ordered Earl grey more than once on separate visits). And far too small of a pot given when advertised as for two. The coffee is fine it’s basic and it’s clear the staff don’t really know what each coffee is as it all it’s just a flat white in different types of glasses instead of what you actually ordered. Biggest disappointment was the food everything but the fry up has considerably dropped in standards, the pancakes are now especially disappointing, have started to be covered in the most unpleasant strawberry ice cream sauce. Which truly was horrid. While most of the other food tried was simply eh. Disappointing as it’s not the cheapest (not unreasonably priced when the food is good but for the currently quality Im no longer sure) and also it has previously been such a lovely place to eat and have a drink. With really nice friendly front of house staff.

Lovely coffee stop during our trip to Canterbury. Aisha was really friendly and professional, even checking to see whether I was vegan when ordering my oat mocha due to the chocolate powder saying 'may contain milk'. Lovely to see so many vegan options too (particularly the range of ice cream flavours!) and to receive a warm welcome. We sat outside and enjoyed the location of the bustling, quaint side street off of Canterbury High Street.

The Stag is by far my favourite place to come in Canterbury for any type of meal, I have never once had a bad experience either here or in the ashford branch. Staff are lovely and good and drink are great.
Also such a great menu, food for any dietary requirements needed.

The Honeycomb latte is a religious experience. Fee took my relatively complicated order (large, extra shot, oatmilk, very little syrup) with grace and presented me with the best coffee I’ve ever had — and I’m a coffee person. I’m traveling and staying at the Hampton next door, and I kid you not what I say that I’ve been back every single day since then. Fee is so kind, patient with ordering, and quick to make drinks. Coffee is TOP NOTCH. Love!

As soon as we sat down, we realised we had made a mistake, so I ordered the simplest thing on the menu, thinking that they couldn't get that wrong - beans on toast with halloumi. The coffee was mediocre, the toast and the beans were cold. I sent the beans back to be microwaved again.
The halloumi was nice though.
The staff ignored us when we said goodbye as we left
Avoid this place.

I popped into Stag with my son and daughter during a particularly stressful shopping trip over the summer. A friend had recommended we try it and, oh my goodness he wasn't wrong. What a fabulous little coffee shop! So many lovely food choices, great coffee, friendly atmosphere, perfect location and wonderful staff. And amazingly the halloumi WAS NOT covered in breadcrumbs … perfect!
We were served by Aisha, who was both gracious and attentive to my finicky child’s food choices, Nothing was too much of a problem, and so my daughter felt relaxed and able to make her choices. Thank you Aisha!
Stag has fast become our rest stop of choice when we visit Canterbury. I didn’t manage to get a picture of our food, but here’s a pic of my wonderful coffee in one of their beautiful cups.

I'm so sad to say I was really disappointed with my visit today. Staff either weren't wearing masks or didn't wear them correctly (I know it's crap wearing them all day but I do it at my job). The food was absolutely horrible which was strange because it's been nice other times and it wasn't busy. The sausages weren't nice and the bacon was completely undercooked but I was honestly just too embarrassed to mention it to the staff especially given that they weren't that friendly. Thankfully my boyfriends food was enjoyable but he did end up having an upset stomach afterwards (it was the only thing he ate).
Also on a different note, the tables are wobbly and the chairs are not suitable for larger people they're so uncomfortable, feeling squished into them is so embarrassing.
We loved going here because of the vast vegan/ veggie options but every single time we come there's some fairly large issue it's so disappointing.
