Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a sweet spot this is, and with great food. I had the stone bass, perfectly prepared., with an excellent glass of wine. I’d totally go back if I’m in Canterbury again.

The atmosphere here was just delightful! Staff were so friendly and chatty. My dad and I enjoyed a wonderful meal, in a quiet section of the restaurant with some delicious drinks. Would 100% recommend.

Very disappointing food at the Bev. A number of items on the menu were not available, which is ok, sometimes these things happen. But the food we did order was incomplete, only containing about a third of the components listed from the menu, which the...staff didn’t make us aware of. The staff weren’t especially interested in the quality of the food they were serving up, nor apologetic that they had knowingly served us incomplete dishes. When queried, the response was that they didn’t have the ingredients. The treacle toffee pudding was rock solid that it was inedible and the waffle dish was a shop bought waffle with two scoops of ice cream. Although a partial refund was offered at the end, it would have been better if they had just been upfront at the point of ordering about what we could have expected from the dishes we had ordered.More

A lovely quaint pub showing the character of Canterbury, ruined by tacky Guinness decor half-heartedly pinned around the pub. Bar staff were lovely and food absolutely delicious! A wider rosé wine selection would also be beneficial.

We have stopped for a drink here before but never to eat. The Menu online looked good, so we took the plunge. Staff always so cheerful and friendly. The Restaurant area is small but really cosy, carpeted throughout so felt warm and homely. Next door...to the kitchen but no cooking smells. The Menu has some favourites eg: fish and chips, ham, egg and chips and some slightly different dishes. I would recommend the chicken kiev. We were served really quickly, food was hot served on hot plates, portion size very good. FRAN who was serving us was excellent. No idea why we haven't eaten here before !!More

Possibly the worst meal out I have ever had. Went in for a family birthday meal, there was 7 of us and the menus online suggested a good variety. The roast menu online is not what you are served. It boasted lamb or beef, braised...red cabbage, mash and cauliflower cheese. Instead it was beef or pork with a oily parsnips and carrot that are barely roasted and cabbage mixed with peas. However, this was not the worst if it. We all had starters, the salt and vinegar chicken wings resembled a kebab shop end of the night wing, the type that was reheated many times. The calamari was undercooked, I had given half to my partner.. everyone that has eaten the calamari have had an upset stomach since. The steak was ok - except the menu again, doesn’t reflect what you ate served. My partner had the butchers burger, except the chef forgot the salt beef so that was served later in the meal. That was dry, as was the childrens burger. The childrens burger was in an adult bun, with a tiny burger inside, so dry it was inedible. Then the puddings, they were star of the show however, again, the menu didn’t reflect what you are served. That boasted clotted cream ice cream, toasted hazelnuts, fresh raspberry’s and a shortbread crumb. It was a brownie with white chocolate chunks on and vanilla ice cream. Service was slow but ok, I appreciated it was busy, but even the most impeccable service could not make up for the worst food ever. It’s not exactly cheap either, the steak was £20, the burger was £16 and the dried up chicken wings were £7!!!! Unfortunately it’s not what it used to, it’s gone from lovely food many years ago, to food that doesn’t even really compete with whetherspoons. Such a shame.More

Meal was quite tasty, although there was grit in the spinach and the new potatoes just on the hard side. Table was not properly clean, the whole surface was sticky.

I haven’t been here in years due to the old covid, but popped in for lunch before picking the kids up from school. Boy, am I glad I did! Visited recently and suddenly the menu is Mexican only. Not what I wanted for a snack lunch. I saw customers leaving as they didn’t want a Mexican lunch in a traditional pub! I persevered and ordered and was exceptionally disappointed. The food quality was poor...and I struggled to eat it. When I mentioned this to the waitress she was defensive bordering on aggressive. What a shame this pun has turned into this - and no excuse for bad service on top.More

I drove from Essex to see my daughter who is based in Canterbury for uni. I brought my new puppy so wanted a dog friendly pub, and this one came up. When we got here we asked for a menu but was told they are...very short staffed. I said oh I’m gutted, I drove up today to eat here but ordered drinks anyways and made my way back to the table. 5 minutes later the manager (I presumed he was!) arrived at the table with a plate of loaded fries - the gesture was thoughtful and well received (as I was starving!) he again apologies but the effort he went to was just lovely. The loaded fries were lovely - and i can’t wait to return for a full meal.More

So updating my review as the last time we ate at the Bev must have been around 2018 when the management had recently changed and a flurry of bad reviews appeared on TA. Up to that point us and our friends used to visit the...pub for food fairly regularly. The Mexican food we had on that visit was appalling ( a shock as it had always been great.) After complaining with the new manager we were invited back and in fact the Mexican meal we had was worse that time, pure 'Old El Paso' and made Taco Locos look good. Quite a feat. (We didn't review that time.) But with Covid I can only assume the manager has either upped her game or has been replaced competely. We ended up visiting on Bank Holiday Monday for a last minute dinner. The waitress could genuinely have not done more to help and should be commended for how welcoming and helpful she was. The food was served quick and we were extremely impressed with the service and food quality. A welcome return to form. Here's hoping it stays that way!More

Took my hungover son there for lunch with the family and dog. Plenty of gluten free options which were clearly marked on the menu - the waiter checked with the kitchen who marked them off. Nice food, friendly staff and would go back. I opted...for lighter mains as I stuffed myself at breakfast but the mains and deserts got massive thumbs up. Dog got treats as well. Would definitely return.More

I don’t normally write bad reviews because everyone has off days. But I have been to this pub twice in two weeks with my work group. It’s at least a dozen people eating and drinking. The food was edible. The wine was overly expensive. We...sat outside because it’s too hot inside, and we could sit with everyone at the same table. The ‘Manager’ was incredibly rude to us both times. The first time she brought our food out with barking accusations of who ordered it, as if she couldn’t be bothered to serve the food. The second time there was a misunderstanding with the garden, as there was no signage or stopping us from going to the garden but it was booked for a party. She started yelling at us, verbally attacking us for not knowing we couldn’t be out there. Then she yelled at me that she was the manager when I told her she was being rude. She later lied, acted fake nice without any real remorse, ignored genuine questions on how to order the food, and frankly I didn’t trust her not to spit in the food at that point. One of our group was afraid to go ask for her pudding after waiting an hour. They were actually afraid of being yelled at. With how she spoke to paying customers, I wouldn’t want to work for her. The other staff seemed great, it’s just a shame they have to work for such an Umbridge. Given the mediocre food, the bad wine, and the terrible manager I do not recommend this place as it is ran at the moment.More
