Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We were 25 people for a sad weekend (funeral) in January and found the Shakespeare by chance while having a pint and seeing the food coming out of their kitchen. So all 25 of us went there for dinner. They were fantastic, laid on extra staff for a Sunday night, sorted out separate tabs so easily for each family and really went the extra mile for us. We had a whole section of the pub closed off for us so we could be together.. The food was really good, freshly made and plenty of it. The chap (sorry, I've forgotten your name) was so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Yep, thoroughly recommend and especially if you want a good family meal out.

Booked into this little pub in the centre of Canterbury for lunch after being very happy with a previous visit....yet again it didn't disappoint!! Cheese and bacon burger and an open chicken satay sandwich with a side of chips were ordered and both throughly enjoyed. Portions are very generous, to be honest, we didn't need the extra chips but they were still very very nice. Staff were very friendly and attentive even when the pub became busy over the lunchtime period, the Manager Christina suggested a lovely white wine which was delicious. This little gem is fast becoming my favourite place to visit when in Canterbury.

The staff are very friendly and the pub mixes traditional with modern and the menu is varied. The cheeseburgers were huge and tasty but a touch dry. The fish and chips however, were disappointing - the breading was soggy and greasy - not at all a pleasant dining experience.

The ambience and building are quaint and inviting. However, the service left a lot to be desired. The waiter spilt a pint of beer all over my wife, and whilst mistakes happen, my wife's coat still has to be dry cleaned. There was no offer of amends, nor even a free drink for my wife, which is bad form and poor customer service. The food took an age to arrive, and was inadequate in quality and volume for the price. I had the chicken and vegetable skewer, which consisted of 3 or 4 small chunks of chicken, a slice of pepper and a couple of cubes of pineapple. To finish it off, a handful of chips. Not a lot for £12. Ketchup came in small metal containers and I had to repeatedly ask for this. We had to get our own salt and vinegar. My friend had the pie, an individual serving that looked like it was purchased in a supermarket and plonked straight in the oven. In all, an experience I do not wish to repeat, and I will never go there again. I would not recommend this pub to anyone I know.

Quaint little pub with a great atmosphere, friendly staff and lovely food and drinks. We visited for lunch while in canterbury with my family and will definitely return when we are back in the area. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the fish & chips and I had the sausage sandwich 10/10 from us. Hopefully we will be able to incorporate our next visit with a live music evening to truly enjoy everything this little pub has to offer

I was absolutely appalled by the service I received. Staff were just on their phones and they didn't seem to care about anyone waiting at the bar and anyone in the pub. They were all too busy standing around gossiping and weren't observant to any guests. This is quite frankly one of the worst pubs I've been to in Canterbury. Their wine bar seems like a waste of space, staff look almost as bored and miserable as I was to be standing there drinking expensive and badly tasting wine. I won't be returning ever again unless they can all start acting like they want a job instead of being at a social club

The ambience of the restaurant is really cute. However the food was mediocre at best. I had a veggie burger which clearly was brought out of the freezer and heated up. The bun was dry and they did nothing to make it a juicy, delectable meal. I was informed they were out of fries, so I got potatoes on the side instead. Again, boring and dry. The sticky toffee pudding was the worst I had tried in England sorry to say. Just a heads up for anyone looking for a great meal, this isn’t the place to go.

Popped in for lunch on one of the hottest days of the year. Sat in a lovely shady courtyard and enjoyed really tasty food. The menu was varied and my fish and chips (not very adventurous, I know, but I have dietary limitations at the moment) was very good - excellent chips, lovely crispy batter and flaky fish, and the peas tasted fresh and not over-cooked.

Wanted somewhere to go last minute for a meal out with my partner, not being from Canterbury we weren't sure where to go...Although it's a small pub from the outside and not on the main highstreet it is well worth finding. Spoke to the manager Cristina and she was amazing, really friendly and fitted us in with no problems at all. The pub was busy, the atmosphere was great and the staff really made us feel welcome. Christina came over personally to ensure we were happy with everything. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and would definitely recommend to friends, we will be back.

We bought a drink at the pub next door (name escapes me). We sat at a table that as it turned out was part of The Shakespeare and we’re told in no uncertain terms by an aggressive little bar manager that we had too move immediately, like you would think the preservation of the world depended on it. As a result, we didn’t go in this pub and never will.

Great place to have a pub lunch. We strolled in to have a drink before visiting the cathedral and loved it so much we came back for a late lunch. Excellent food and great choice of wines. Friendly staff and very clean toilets and seating areas

Went there with my family at the end of a 6 day trip to England. Honestly the nicest service by far. The food was delicious and the service was fast. Cosy atmosphere and a little backyard dining area to boot.

Amazing pub. We stumbled across while walking down the lanes on our day trip to Canterbury. Cosy but lively at the same time, we had a really nice time. Bartenders were super friendly and service was quick! Highly recommend

Good welcoming pub. Can’t fault food and drink and staff especially are so pleasant and helpful. the only thing I’ve marked it down on is that it was uncomfortably cold in there at lunchtime when we visited.
