The Moon Highgate is located on Highgate in Kendal, and is a shade under three quarters of a mile from the station on foot. We had booked a table on a Friday evening via e-mail as the restaurant had not long opened after lockdown restrictions. I had a crab and peach starter, confit of chicken for main course and local cheese for dessert. All were excellent. The crab was delicious although a little expensive ; the chicken dish was equally good, similar to a cassoulet with beans and sausage ; the three cheeses really nice as well, although I could have done with more of them ! To drink, I had an elderflower gin & tonic, a bottle of Viognier and an Irish coffee. All very palatable. The service was really good and we thoroughly enjoyed the nice atmosphere in the restaurant. The cost for four was around £160 which was good value for the quality of the food and drink.

Having fairly recently moved to Kendal we're over The Moon to have found this fab restaurant. We had been recommended it by quite a few of the locals, so we were expecting great things, and we weren't disappointed. The location is great, being central to Kendal. If you're going to a show at The Brewery Arts Centre, as we were, the location is ideal as it is directly opposite The Brewery. We had a warm welcome from friendly staff, and chose to sit upstairs which manages to mix a contemporary style into a very traditional building very well. Service was prompt, without feeling rushed, throughout our meal. I started with the crab and blood orange salad which was really light and delicious, with a dressing that had a decent kick of horseradish to it. My husband had the soup which he also enjoyed. We then both decided to indulge in the steak, and were so glad we did.We do like a good steak and since moving to Cumbria, it may seem odd, but we've actually struggled to find any really beefy, well hung steak - but this was superb! Beautifully cooked and really flavoursome. So much so that we asked who the supplier was, and it turned out he was a local farmer who was also in dining that night! We finished with affogato - one of my favourite desserts. The Moon is, we would suggest, a special occasion restaurant, as the prices aren't everyday, but neither is the food. We would happily recommend it and will certainly revisit in the future.

We went to The Moon for my Birthday meal a couple of weeks ago. It was brilliant. The staff were extremely helpful, the food was delicious and my Birthday Cake was made by the chefs and it was perfect. Its a lovely setting and we had a brilliant night. I would highly recommend.

My husband chose this restaurant for our Valentine’s meal. I didn’t really fancy anything on the main course section. There were two vegetarian dishes to choose from or Venison, cod and steak, I did not fancy any so I chose Sea-bass from the starter menu. You have to pay extra for potatoes and veg, although the steak has some veg on the plate. We did not have any deserts as my husband was full, however at £7 each I thought that was a little too steep. Four cheeses and biscuits are £10. The staff were very attentive and the restaurant was really lovely and very relaxed, We had coffee accompanied with a hand made chocolate each. On our exit I was given a box with two delicious hand made chocolates in it.

Very under par. Shabby furnishings, average, tasteless food served at different temperatures and chips piping hot and undercooked. Table water had a hard lime taste (could easily have been filtered for the customer). Espresso was a full small coffee cup of bitter coffee and not a tiny shot as it should be. Grossly overpriced. London prices but no gesture of a reduction as the capital’s restaurants would have made. Hence this restaurant receives a 2 star for allowing a customer to leave dissatisfied.

Massively overpriced for what you get. We went for our anniversary dinner and heard nice things about this place. We got there and straight away felt ushered around in the small restaurant. We got to our table (which was very uneven) , no drinks menu or menu was given to us. Only about 20 minutes if the waitresses walking past us was we asked for our drinks and as we didn’t have a menu we didn’t have a choice. We got the menus and well, The menu is tiny, I understand keeping it small helps the food quality but seriously, 5 mains to choose from on which didn’t seem appealing, same with the starters and all so overpriced. £7 for soup if the day? Seriously? Which was just a tomato soup when we asked. Therefore we avoided started and chose our mains. My partner had the roe deer and I had the Cannelloni. Now put to this way , would you pay £21.90 for two slices of meat? And £15.50 for goats cheese and broccoli? In hindsight wouldn't of bothered with the massively overpriced and overrated establishment. Not to mention we was waiting on a dessert menu for 15 minutes and for then to never return to take a order so we went downstairs to pay instead to all the waitresses sitting around the bar. As I said in hindsight wouldn't of bothered and would’ve found somewhere much nicer to enjoy our anniversary meal.

In spite of other reviews, we were very disappointed by this restaurant. Our welcome was far from warm. We duly waited to be seated as instructed on a chalk board by the door. A young lady seated at the end of the bar did not get up to greet us but pointed to a table by the window and told us that as we were 15 minutes early we could only order drinks and nibbles. There was no need to tell us as we would have been happy to do that any way. However the choice of “nibbles” was extremely limited so we settled for some olives which tasted strange and stale. The ham hock starter was ok but under seasoned and would have benefitted from an accompaniment of some nice bread. My husband didn’t find the “cured salmon” starter had much flavour and his beef main underwhelming at £29. My stone bass main was a bad choice. The fish did not taste fresh and the accompanying sauce was greasy and far too salty. I was given the opportunity of choosing something else but to be honest, there was nothing else on the limited menu that appealed.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch at The Moon with family and friends. To start we just had bread which was a beautifully light and moist whole sourdough loaf cut into quarters with creamed butter. Mains included a traditional roast beef, corn fed chicken breast with a Parmesan and truffle crust, accompanied by summer vegetables and pommes Anna and a spiced roast cauliflower with spinach potatoes, aubergine purée, masala and crispy onions. Desserts featured a beautiful bitter chocolate ganache with forest berry compote and black cherry sorbet and a vanilla panna cotta with poached rhubarb, ginger beer jelly, rhubarb sorbet and honeycomb. All the food was perfectly cooked, delicious and beautifully presented and all for £22 for 2 courses which was incredible value for money. The venue set over 3 floors was very cosy and service friendly, if a little on the slow side.

Kendal was our first trip with Alfie, our Cockapoo puppy. It was also our first trip post COVID lockdown. We went to Kendal with little expectation food wise; after all there aren’t too many top class restaurants that allow you to have your dog under the table! We indeed had some pub food which was decent, and fulfilling enough. The Moon, however, gave us faith that we can have our dog AND top class food. I like my bread, and as I’ve suggested in previous reviews, I think it can be a pointer to just how much a restaurant actually cares. The Sourdough here, along with the beautiful whipped butter, bought a smile to my face. This smile turned more to a grin when I had my first taste of my starter; a wonderfully balanced pea and wild garlic soup. Great start. My main bought me blade of beef; a choice I’m sometimes a little wary of as it can get a little dry. This wasn’t. Either was the beautiful potato terrine, which with the truffle and red wine sauce and perfect caramelised onions, shone a culinary light on the tender, moist beef. I could wax lyrical for much longer. A certain organisation gives ‘stars’ out to restaurants which it perceives may be worth a trip away. We’re certainly coming back; the trips booked already. Sadly my personal ‘stars’ are of slightly less value.. Highly recommended.

Small place but has space upstairs too. Both menu and wine list are limited, which i think gives an indication that the proprietors/chef place importance on local ingredients and cooking few things well. The waiting staff were cheery and our table was appropriately spaced from others to comply with CV19 guidelines. Monkfish cheeks starter - delicious, cod loin main, also gorgeous and a good size. Had space for a sticky toffee pudding and was pleased with the sponge/sauce ratio which is often stingy on the sauce. Very happy. The Viognier was very reasonable and tasty, would absolutely go back.

A nice friendly welcome to a lovely restauarant The setting is lovely and the ambience was great Great menu and the service was excellent. Great food and wine which was well presented £94 was the total for 2 of us Value for money? I’d say yes definately 2 things i think were wrong though. 1. The wine should have been opened at the table not brought to the table already opened. 2. The red wine we chose was cold Incidental issues maybe but this is constructive Definately recommend this place and we will be back Good job done by all the staff we met

We originally booked the restaurant as it looked the nicest in the area, although had we known the prices and the quantities we would not have chosen this ! The setting was quite nice and the waitress welcomed us at the door. However we were in a cramped seat and people were constantly walking past. When it came to ordering though, we realised how expensive the food was, which would be fine except the portion sizes were ridiculously small ! My boyfriend ordered the chicken which was 4 slices of chicken (not even a whole breast! ) and I ordered the gnocchi, and there were no more than 10 pieces of gnocchi ! The chicken was £24 and the gnocchi, £16. I admit the gnocchi was good, but it was not worth £16!

The Moon is a fantastic bistro. We pair had a meal without fault. Portions are good and service warm and unobtrusive. My partner enjoyed both the warm up sourdough and her starter of beetroot. Her main of chicken on barley was comfort food of the highest order. I had a fresh and invigorating mackeral starter and a main of roast cod with leek and mushroom that was as good as anything I have eaten all year. Chips were crispy and delicious and we shared a pudding of apple crumble tart that did exactly what was required. House white was an enjoyable bottle of sauv blanc at £18 and the whole bill, whilst not cheap, is really good value for the quality of the cooking. We came on a Saturday and due to covid restrictions the place was winding down around 9pm, fingers crossed that they survive the crisis and we can enjoy ourselves here again next time we are in Kendal.

I love this place and am everything about it. We had a table booked for 8pm which they very kindly rearranged to 6pm to enable us to watch the England match. From start to finish, the food was delicious. Starters of sea trout, cod cheeks and cashew nut labneh set the tone before main courses of hake and roe deer took things to an even higher level. Staff are friendly and efficient without being in your face and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and convivial. Drinks are sensibly priced and as for the rhubarb panne cotta! It's a great place and somewhere I know we will return to again soon. Thanks.

Arrived early in Kendal so asked if we could dine an hour earlier than our booking and they were able to accommodate us safely despite the Covid conditions. Shared the freshly baked tomato & rosemary focaccia which was fantastic. We had the Monkfish cheeks & the soup of the day as starters, both really tasty. Then two amazing mains salmon, new potatoes, fennel & bread beans. Also the Potato Gnocchi with a side of maple glazed roasted carrots. Only regret was being too full to try a dessert. All for a very reasonable price given the quality. Highly recommend.
