The good burghers of Birmingham are immensely proud of their slightly dubious claim to the Balti; a curry named, so it is is believed, after the wok-style dish it is both cooked and served in. While the true origins of the dish (in both senses of the word) are somewhat mysterious, it is true to say that these days in Britain you can get a balti almost anywhere and pretty much the only thing that connects a balti in Birmingham to a balti in Basildon, Bury or Berwick-upon-Tweed is the dish they come in.
Fellpack in Keswick has taken this concept and given it a slightly eccentric and, in their words, eclectic twist. The main dishes come (mostly) presented in fabulous, locally made, earthenware bowls which the restaurant calls Fellpots. There is no one style of food here, the menu is seasonal and quirky; we found pork belly ramen on offer along side, Indonesian lamb rendang, BBQ chicken (& waffles!), fishcake and gnocchi. All the food we had was excellent and appreciative noises emanated freely from our table and many of those around us too.
The restaurant itself bustles, the “vibe” (as only young people with no cringe gland and Austin Powers might say) is relaxed and welcoming and the staff friendly and attentive. There is the constant genteel hubbub of people thoroughly enjoying themselves and their food. The decor is pure lakeland (the national park, not the plastic kitchen utensil purveyor), wood clad walls, rustic signage, murals of fell side splendour. It pulls off cosy but spacious remarkably well.
There are places which don’t put prices on menus, hoping to give off that exclusive “if you have to ask, you can’t afford to be here” impression. Fellpack is not like that. It’s not in the least bit “up itself”, but it is one of those places where they put the price on the menu but not the units, which slightly irritates the pedant in me. Our bill, for four of us, came to around 150 whatever-they-ares, which is very reasonable for the excellent quality of the food and service if it’s in pounds sterling and bloody marvellous if it’s in Euros (it’s in sterling, obviously).
The measure of any restaurant is if you would come again. Well, I live over 200 miles from Keswick so a return visit in the near future is unlikely. But if I lived in this part of the country I’d possibly become something of a regular.

Came here for lunch on Saturday. Nice place although the lunch menu was quite limited.
We both ordered the chicken burger. Whilst waiting we saw one or two chicken burgers come out for other customers - they looked stacked and tall.
Our then arrived and looked like they were made with 2 burger bun bases as they were flat on the top! Then another burger came out for a different table and again it had a proper bun top and bottom. Odd....
Saying that the food was nice. The fries were delicious and the burger was nice although it was a couple of goujon sized pieces inside and not a proper burger breast.
Price was very reasonable it has to be said.

We booked online and received confirmation almost immediately for a recent stay in Keswick. On arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and enjoyed a drink whilst waiting for our table. The fellpack was busy on the Friday night and had a lovely atmosphere, ambiance about it. Nice chilled music was being played and the decor was modern with references to everything local about Keswick, walking climbing, mountains and amazing scenery.
The menu is excellent, and not over complicated. The theme being fell pots which are lovely pot dishes that he food is served in. We chose the lamb tangine and the sweet potato and chick pea curry. Both dishes were hot with lovely fresh ingredients and tasted great. This followed the onion bharji starters which were also delicious.
The food and drinks are very good value for money and the staff are very friendly and attentive without being too fussy. We would definitely recommend the Fellpack to anyone visiting Keswick. Thanks for a lovely evening.

Not what it was before they moved premises. They used to have a bustling little place always busy, a really good menu with a lovely selection of delicious curries. Now the menu is much shorter, less choice and a lot of eggs!! The bigger new premises looked nice but was lucky if it was a third full on a dry day on a Sunday!! Now I know why.
I asked the gentleman who showed us to our table what the gluten free choices were and if they had anything available without eggs he sounded accommodating and made all the right noises. When we ordered I expressly asked the server twice if I could have my choice with no eggs on. Only two choices were available for GF both predominantly egg based dishes. We waited an eternity for our food to arrive and when it eventually came my plate was dominated by two large slimy fried eggs covering everything else. I said sorry I expressly asked for mine without eggs and I don’t want that. They apologised and offered to make us something else quickly (but given the restaurant was quiet when we visited, it took so long to cook our meals, they had got it wrong once and hadn’t listened I declined as we were running out of time and had to head home). They said they had not charged us for my main at the till (which was hardly generous given it took so long to arrive, wasn’t what I had asked for and I ended up going hungry and not having a meal etc). I won’t be back again and I certainly wouldn’t recommend.

Excellent food, great atmosphere.
This place rarely disappoints with its stylish, yet cosy decor and delicious food.
Had a pre theatre meal here. A drink each, plus main and dessert came in between £70-80 which we thought was really good value.
The service is attentive and friendly and of all the places to eat in Keswick, this one is a favourite.

Situated on the edge of Keswick near the lake, but only 5 minutes from the town centre. Very welcoming and staff friendly and helpful. Varied menu with quirky food. The waiter was beyond accommodating when I wasn’t sure about the pickle on the hash and he arranged for the chef to put it as a side dish. Food of exceptional quality served in lovely surroundings. It was very busy and booking is recommended although walk ins were being accommodated. Had the orange ginger cake sweet, this topped off an extremely high quality evening. Premises dog friendly. Would highly recommend a visit.

We had a really great evening in the lovely warm atmosphere as the rain poured down outside.
The menu is really interesting and varied with some great seasonal offers. The staff were really accommodating of our wishes to share some dishes and thought through the requirements for additional plates and crockery without being asked so we really felt well looked after.
Thanks for a great evening.

Great welcoming staff, lovely venue, great choice of food. Visited here with my husband we were staying at the Fellpack hotel and had read reviews on the food before we arrived. We were not disappointed ..... every course was well presented , and delicious we had Rosemary Foccacia (with olive oil and balsamic) and Chorizo to start which we shared. Main course I had the Katsu Chicken and my husband had the Fish curry both of which were well presented and tasted amazing I have to say the Fish Curry was another level.
Desserts - Sticky Toffee pudding with ice cream and honeycomb and Burnt Baaque cheesecake , I think this was the best sticky Toffee pudding I have had.and my husband enjoyed the cheesecake.
Overall we had a lovely evening you can tell that time, love and energy has gone into this restaurant the little touches like the story of the team within a booklet on the table, the riddles and the information on the Fellpack pot which is made by a local pottery place. Great job guys and thank you for adding joy to a much needed weekend away

We had an excellent experience at this spot! The service was great and fast from start to finish. I ordered the avocado toast with eggs and a cappuccino, and my boyfriend with had the breakfast muffin
The food was absolutely delicious—10/10! It arrived quickly, and everything was cooked to perfection, the poched eggs were the best in my life no runny white and perfect runny yolk. The hash browns were unreal and the cheese was melted perfectly on the muffin!
While the service was generally good, there were a couple of small oversights: I wasn't offered a teaspoon with my hot drink, and salt pepper/ condiments were missing from the table. But both were quickly given once I mentioned them, which shows how attentive the staff is.
They had a fun little booklet to keep you
Waiting with maps, riddles, recipies and drink options!
Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this place, we’re absolutely looking forward to go againb

Really good alternative to all the 'pub food' in keswick. The mackerel rillette with gooseberry was great, hubby enjoyed the chorizo with red wine and we accompanied these with foccacia which made for a great starter. The mains (fish curry and beef ragu) were fabulous, portion sizes were absolutely fine for us but understand why others may think differently The fish curry was supposed to come with a chapati and it actually came with a cold supermarket bought wholemeal wrap - so out of keeping with the dish, not nearly as nice and chapatis are so easy to make. But definitely love the place and will be back. Dog friendly is also a great help

As expected on a Saturday night in July it was busy and we hadn't booked. Harry couldn't of been more helpful and efficient in getting us drinks and menus while we waited and it most certainly was worth the wait! I'm gluten free and there were some lovely options but I wanted the 12 hour braised shin beef (without pasta) - 'not a problem' said Harry and I was offered alternatives, opting for fries and fresh veggies, it was delicious! A great experience all round, thank you.

This place is absolutely fantastic. The staff are all really polite and friendly, and the place is obviously well managed - everyone working here seems to be really engaged and customer focused, and there's a really nice vibe. A friend and I popped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning, and couldn't have enjoyed it more. The coffee was delicious, and the food was amazing. There are some really interesting dishes on offer, cooked fabulously, reasonably priced, and all served pretty quickly too. If you're in Keswick, this is definitely a place you should visit!

If you are in Keswick you have to visit The Fellpack. We popped in for coffee after a lovely walk in the park opposite with out two dogs. Even with the dogs in tow, we were made so welcome, we decided to return for dinner. By the way, the hot chocolate with cream is a stunner and my husband said the coffee was one of he best he had on our trip. For dinner we had spiced cashews and onion bhajis to start. The bhajis were excellent, soft on the inside and ultra crip on the outside. For mains we had Keralian Curry Fish and the Indonesian Lamb Redang. Both were really excellent and the lamb was melt in the mouth. A couple of glasses of really nice red wine and we were very happy campers. The bill was very reasonable and last but not least, the staff are an absolute joy, friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Its relaxed, charming and just down right good!

First impressions were good. It is located in a lovely traditional stone building and has been decorated in a relaxed modern style. The staff were friendly and helpful from the start. Once seated they brought tap water to the table without having to be asked.
The menu is not vast but has a diverse enough selection to suit all tastes. Vegans and vegetarians are well catered for. We kicked things off with some perfectly cooked onion Bhajis, that did not have a trace of grease, and a fresh, sweet, and vibrant Romesco dip that was served with homemade tortilla chips.
We chose the falafel kofta which was served with baba ganoush. I particularly enjoyed the roasted hazelnuts that were scattered on top. The main base of the dish was the moreish giant couscous that had the perfect balance of spice and flavour. We chose the vegan hotdog for our other main dish. Filled with classic hotdog flavours and delicious skin-on fries on the side. Even the coleslaw was tasty.
While the sweet options were very tempting, we decided to opt out of dessert as we had spotted an ice cream shop that stayed open late.

Picked this spot because of the options on the menu. Some different options that you don't normally see. Husband described the Onion Bhaji's as the best he has had, to go along side his Indonesian Lamb Curry, my Beef Ragu was fabulous as well. Good drinks selection. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Nice, relaxed atmosphere
